  1. I don't recall how I felt toward him at the time. My fandom was around its low and the lockout was coming. But I remember being really disappointed at least. And I am more annoyed about it now given the hypocrites who hammer the younger generation for their indiscretions and how they treat their team/teammates. Chief among them Ryno and his BS "kids these days" speech. i was 11 at the time and i was more bothered as to how much the cubs sucked and the impending strike than anything else. with treblehorn doing the firehouse chats and the lack of quality players (as far as players worth following, sosa was still a small blip on the radar and grace was having an OK season), there wasn't much to root for. i also remember that the same week that sandberg retired, the whole OJ thing was unfolding so whatever annoyance i might've had towards sandberg was washed away by the spectacle that was to become OJ SIMPSON plastered all over my television screen.
  2. most likely in the minority here, but sandberg retiring mid-season never bothered me that much. his reasoning as to why he did was laughable (losing the desire to get ready for each game) where it was obvious that his wife/divorce was the real reason. same with sosa leaving early on the last day in '04...so many positive memories eclipse that one incident.
  3. i can see how cindy sandberg screwed the team, but how did ryno do that? by retiring? ehh, that's a bit of a stretch. the cubs should have sosa back in some way, shape or form. if the tigers can have a statue of the wife-beating bigot ty cobb in front of ford field, i believe the cubs can make amends with a superstar that left early on the last day of the 2004 season. he made them shitloads of money for over a decade and to hold that one incident over his head is so petty on their end.
  4. martin maldonado of the brewers rips the cover off a baseball. literally. http://m.mlb.com/video/v32180219/milpit-alvarez-perplexed-by-coverless-ball-in-mitt/?query=Martin%2BMaldonado
  5. i'll be at the game tomorrow. at least i'll get travis wood as part of the pitching matchup. first time at the new stadium, too. hopefully it doesn't smell like piss like the old one did.
  6. heading out to 11th street bar to watch liverpool/man city. should be the match of the season. are there any liverpool fans in this thread besides myself?
  7. my god, you could fit a family of four inside of kaplan's suit jacket! how hard is it to get a suit jacket tailored?
  8. looks like devin hester will not be with the bears next season... http://www.suntimes.com/sports/26011963-419/devin-hester-i-wont-be-with-bears-next-season.html
  9. is there video of that home run floating around somewhere? i can't seem to find it. one of my favorite moments from the 2003 season.
  10. he is such a steaming pile of [expletive]. the worst thing is that he supposedly told other players Laurenzi was anti-semitic. that's not a stain you can easily wash off. [expletive] deplorable.
  11. i'm curious to see how many people either do not renew their season tickets this off-season or the ones that are chosen to purchase season tickets pass on the opportunity due to lack of cash or the poor play of the last two seasons. i was chosen back in early 2012 to purchase season tickets and i had to pass because of friends bowing out at the last minute due to other obligations (read: becoming parents). i signed back up on the season ticket waiting list in february 2012 and my new number was 115,359. i checked back earlier this year and my number dropped to 83,859. i wouldn't mind dropping another 31,500 places over the next 2 or 3 seasons to hopefully catch the cubs being successful once again.
  12. MARTA is a customer, and they most definitely have a stop at Turner Field. 2 in fact. closest MARTA stop is a mile away/25 minutes walking: http://martaguide.com/2009/06/18/marta-to-turner-field/ http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/atl/ballpark/directions/index.jsp?content=public_transportation i noticed this when looking into transportation routes to turner field from the atlanta suburbs earlier this year.
  13. is there a place online where i can watch the england/poland match? espn3 doesn't seem to be carrying it.
  14. Anyone know where there is video of that play? I keep trying to find it. Also, shockingly, Girardi was an All-Star in his second stint with the Cubs. here you go:
  15. Yep, that's always the first thing that pops in my head. Sort-of related, I feel like a good way to test if you're dealing with a Cubs' die-hard (presuming they're old enough to have seen it) is to ask if they know who the three players in that rundown were. Random thing that only lunatics like us remember, I'm sure. best cubs gave i've ever been to. i wonder if the sportscenter video i uploaded years ago is still floating around online...
  16. what type of contract do we think shin-soo choo will get this off-season?
  17. http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2013/8/9/4605428/albert-pujols-steroids-jack-clark jack clark doesn't like anyone not named jack clark. he talks a lot of [expletive]. he was doing the same crap 25 years ago with tony gwynn, saying to the press he was a selfish player and only cared about winning batting titles.
  18. the fun starts here: http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showthread.php?t=1452867&page=31 first misery post gets extra credit points by starting out with the episode 3 darth vader "nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!"
  19. jersey, this might be a little out of your way, but there's an excellent blackhawks bar in bay ridge, brooklyn: http://www.yelp.com/biz/windy-city-ale-house-brooklyn i went there last night and it was packed with blackhawks fans. chicago style dogs and chicago beer on tap. highly recommended.
  20. would alex gordon be a trade target for the cubs? he signed a 4-year extension at the start of the 2012 season, but with the royals playing not as well as they hoped, perhaps they would want to get some younger prospects for him. apologies if this was brought up somewhere else.
  21. ryan dempster has thrown 123 pitches so far in 4 2/3 innings tonight. he's given up 6 hits and walked 7 batters. as far as i can remember, i've never seen a pitch count that high so early in a game.
  22. is espn watching the wrong game? 9th C Heisey grounded into fielder's choice to third, J Votto scored, B Phillips out at third, T Frazier to second. 2 3
  23. i'm coming back to chicago for a few days in april and looking to purchase tickets for the red wings game on 4/12 on stubhub. i've only been to the united center twice and never for a bulls/blackhawks game. for those who go there to see hockey and basketball games, what are the better 300 level sections to sit in?
  24. i was at the 11-10 game. i had 11th row seats behind the reds dugout, but a friend of mine bought 12 seats in section 140. i gave the two tickets i had to my parents. my dad said that was the most enjoyable cubs gave he's been to during his 60 years of going to wrigley. put a smile on my face.
