  1. It's sad because Illinois, historically, has a great football tradition I know. I go to more games than most Illinois fans I know. Another problem they have around here is they constantly degrade Chicago about everything, then scratch their heads when the best football and basketball players from the Chicago area don't come to Champaign. I think most fans were just frustrated when they let Zook go for making a bowl, and then Beckman took over and won 1 B1G game in two years and finished last in the B1G in recruiting the past two years, meaning he did neither recruiting nor results right. It's honestly a shock that the team is bowl-eligible this year, but that's largely on how terrible the conference is this year than how well the Illini played, despite today being their best performance of the season by far, especially on defense. Illinois last two bowl teams will also be the teams that have gotten the last two coaches fired

  3. Illinois fans suck. They only support really good teams, and then not that great. What coach or recruits would want to come to that.
  4. When I have watched Michigan this season, I have wondered how they would be if Gardner wasn't a complete disaster. They are going lose today, but they look like a solid team.
  5. It will be interesting with both Michigan and Florida searching this off-season. 2 huge alumni bases that will make these two very well paid jobs
  6. Illinois can be bowl eligible if they win out also. Home against Penn St and at N'western. But that would take N'western out. Would Michigan take a bowl bid if they are 6-6 and probably searching for a new coach? I will almost guarantee that Miss St will stay in the top 4.
  7. Watching the Wings/Hawks last night was kind of like watching them play in the Hawks pre-cup years. Except the roles a reversed. The Wings have become a faster team than the Hawks which has not been the case in a long time. Even when the Wings were still the better team the Hawks caused them trouble by playing fast, jumping/gambling in passing lanes and making up for mistakes by strong back-checking and faster defensive players. The Hawks are still the better team without a doubt, Wings do not have enough scorers. But it is kind of fun watching the Wings this year because they do play with a high level of energy and speed most nights, something that was lacking badly until the middle of last season. Last night was the first time this season I have watched more than a period of the Hawks. Versteeg playing on the top line...WTF. Even when he was a solid player in the Hawks first cup run, he was a border line top 6 guy. I think this is a case where Q may be relying too much on a 'safe' veteran than playing someone who has more skill but may make some defensive lapses. Except the safe veteran in this case is really not that safe
  8. I didn't like MSU's matchup with OSU. They are good at what MSU's defense is willing to give you, deep passes. When we adjusted in the 2nd half, we gave up too much yards rushing. That being said, I think MSU abandoned the run too much, even when it was still tied in the first half. I think OSU can play with some of the big names, but their defense will have to be better.
  9. They don't bother me that much. I think it's clear that they are currently not a top 4 team.
  10. I think people read too much into individual games. Best to judge teams on the bigger picture. Went to West Lafayette today. I have enjoyed my trips there in the past. A little sad to see the lack of fans, because the fans have been great in the past. Looked for the John L Smith clown car after the game today. Trying to find something to explain what MSU has been doing in the 4th quarters the last 2 weeks.
  11. I have watched about 4 quarters of Michigan FB so far this year. I still cannot name a receiver besides Funchess. I am not saying Gardner or Morris are any good, but I can tell from my MSU experience 2 seasons ago it is hard to have a decent offense without any receivers. Thought it was funny when their fans cheered Gardner today. I bet they really miss Lloyd Carr now also. They couldn't wait til he retired.
  12. MSU is a top ten team. Homer post of the week:)
  13. I think a kick-off from the 10 would be cool. A decent return should get around mid-field or better. Make the offensive team have to accomplish something to get into FG range. Plus get these OTs rolling. There is way too much down time in OT. No TV timeouts. 1 timeout per team for the entire OT.
  14. a couple of weeks ago Boers and Bernstein kind of gave their support for lifting the ban. It had something to do with discrediting the Pro-Joe crowd. They were about as anti-PSU as you could get.
  15. Same for Illinois. not like Washington has been doing anything that good
  16. Someone on a MLIVE account made a comparison between Hoke's tenure at Michigan and Charlie Weiss when he was at ND. Early over-achievement. Initial recruiting success. Big time hires at coordinators. Never really advanced that much. Recruiting fell off after a couple of yrs. Hammered in the ND/Mich game I have come off the ledge a little over MSU's collapse last night against Oregon. I still think they can compete with the big boys. However, that loss combined with the B1Gs awful day may have eliminated them from getting a shot at the playoff, even if they win out.
  17. the overexposure of the NFL has really wore on me the last 5 yrs or so. I played fantasy football for over 20 yrs, Todd Christenson was the first player taken in my first draft. After awhile the whole thing just got stale and the games are kind of boring. Also I am a Raider fan(I didnt draft Christenson) which has not been that much fun for about 10 yrs now. To me CFB is miles ahead of NFL. I am not saying anything about anyone here, but I have never understood people who are not understanding that a certain sport is not your thing. Then have to argue why their sport obsession is better than mine or someone else's. It is just subjective taste.
  18. I think the only way the scheduling changes is when a team that is 10-2 but played a very tough non-con schedule makes the championship playoff over a 11-1 or 12-0 team that played no one non-conference. I think this is more possible in the current format than it was in the past.
  19. If Mariota can make good downfield passes I think Oregon will win. MSU is very good at stopping the spread, very similar to Stanford in how they attack the spread. I have a very hard time seeing this game being a blowout. But hey, MSU seems to be overlooked a lot, especially by other B1G fans
  20. Seems odd that you are laughing at the Tigers in one statement, than seem to be praising the Angels in the next. All misfortune in others is funny, even if for opposing reasons. The Tigers, A's and Rays are my 3 favorite teams besides the Cubs for various reasons. But I am kind of with you on the Tigers and A's because all the talking heads proclaimed them as the teams to beat because they were the most active pre-deadline. It annoys me how easily pundits will make such proclamations just because a team has a shiny new thing.
  21. Seems odd that you are laughing at the Tigers in one statement, than seem to be praising the Angels in the next.
  22. in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter what the A's do to those who dislike the sabermetrics movement. If the A's win the WS this yr it will because they went against what they usually do and went out and got some pitching, if they do not win it will be because they do not play enough 1 run baseball down the stretch and in the playoffs to win. So Steve Stone is basically being like a political pundit, pandering to the people who are already 'anti-Moneyball'
  23. my biggest issue with the SEC has never been how good they are or are they the best conference. I think it is hard to argue against that over the course of the last 10 yrs. My issue is that a team like Texas A&M will jump from 21 in the polls to 7 this week while SC will only drop a couple of spots. If lets say Nebraska beats Michigan St in a couple of weeks, Nebraska would not make a jump like that, but MSU would drop at least 10 spots. But since the new playoff system is not reliant on the polls, I don't really care any more.
  24. I assumed the White Sox had run away with this race, but it could become a good poll question
  25. It looks like ND is/has been aggressive on this issue, hopefully no coaches are involved. But another example of being careful before anyone starts pointing fingers at another college fb/bb program...chances are it is just a matter of time before your school/players get in trouble for something
