  1. I really think this is being done so Pie's service time doesnt start. I really am not against this if it is the case. Especially since Dusty wouldnt probably even consider playing him in Right or Center with Pierre and Jones there. So you would have Murton, Pagan and Pie fighting for scraps in left instead of being the starting OF for the month like they should be in the Cubs case. OFF Topic but why do they put players on the dl in Sept? I now it probably doesnt really make a difference but what if Barrett was ready to go in less than 15 days?
  2. I agree. I hope he is out for the season with something rather than an arm injury. Sadly I thought it was obvious in the first inning today something was wrong.
  3. I would rather go with 2 out of Hill, Marshall, Guzman and Marmol than have Gil Meche. Since Prior will probably be out for extended time that would make 3. I am not against this but I am guessing most Cub fans arent patient enough for this. I would bet that Murton would put up a higer ops than any of the 3 guys you have listed to start next season if he is given the chance. I also think that Pie would do just as well as Pierre if not better for A LOT less money. I would be for adding Soriano but I think his contract will be an albatross in 2 years. If the Cubs used Murton, Pie and a couple of young starter it shouldnt make a difference though. What I think the Cubs will do is way overpay for mediocre players though. More Juan Pierre and Jacque Jones types.
  4. As much as I think Charlie Weiss is overrated, I really liked his play calls at the end of the game. I would want to play for a coach who calls plays like that.
  5. I think Tennesse is just showing what is obvious to most everyone. The SEC is a level ahead of every other conference. A not considered conference contender is taking a Pac Ten team that everyone thought would be good out back for a whooping. The Big Ten looked a little soft today.
  6. I dont know if it will be soon or after the season. The one thing I have noticed is that Dusty's and Jim's relationship is starting to get edgy. If they dont do it tomorrow though I just dont see them doing it anytime in Sept.
  7. I would say that increasing OBP would increase KOs. Probably would go hand in hand. I dont believe that we need to be striking out the most in the league or anything. Sulleys points of use taking shortened swings on 1-2 counts is correct. This is a bad approach except for some limited game situations. KO is not nearly as bad as an offensive stat than low obp or slugg percentage.
  8. The last time I looked the Cubs were close to last in the league in KOs. I just threw this out there to enhance your point. I remember a couple of years ago people making the big mistake of complaining that we struck out too much. While I agree that there is times that you should shorten your stroke and make sure you make contact with 2 strikes. Those times are very limited though. Most of the time you would be a much better hitter if you took a normal cut with 2 strikes and maybe take a chance that a good pitchers pitch is a ball and take it.
  9. Before the High Five there was a lot of rump smacking. I will have to go out on a limb and say that the High Five was good for sports. Dusty may have invented "incoherent ramblings from a sain and sober man"
  10. Is it a whole lot different than the NFL is now? The AFC is clearly the better conference after years of NFC dominance. Heck if the Bears were in the AFC they wouldnt even make the playoffs this year or last. Before you start some sort of pro Bears arguement dont forget the Steelers were the 6th seed in the AFC last year I wouldnt be surpised if the Mets win the WS. I am not saying they will or going to bet on it. I just dont think they are that far behind some AL teams. As said take away the DH in some of the games at Shea and I really think they can compete. Funny how the best team in Baseball right now (Tigers) would probably be able to compete just fine without a DH.
  11. One the "Mike and Mike in the Morning" guys said he thinks it pretty obvious that Giradi is going to be the Cubs manager next season. Doesnt make it true but I thought I would mention that a national guy thinks its going to happen
  12. I said 3rd base was hard. Maybe Gary Gaetti would have been a better choice. Dunston would probably be a good choice at SS except he was probably the best defensive SS in baseball for a couple of years. yeah yeah he made alot of errors and didnt have a good fielding Percentage. He got to more balls than any other SS that I have ever seen though before he got hurt. I do believe he had a range factor of over 7 a couple of years.
  13. Pierre at best is a below average fielding CFer who puts up a couple of decent looking offensive stats. Honestly he is Omar Moreno. Yes the Pirates won in 79 with Moreno but that doesnt change the fact that Moreno wasnt very good. Cub fans for years have looked at players who work hard, hustle some, nice to the media and put up a decent BA or something and way overrate them. Worse of all some bad GM (his initials are probably JH) is going to give Pierre 8-9 million for 3 seasons. My all-time "Juan Pierre" team. Hard working players who put up 1 or 2 good stats but were way overrated by a lot of Cub fans Juan Pierre CF Glenn Beckertt 2b Bill Buckner 1b Keith Moreland RF Jose Cardinal lf Jose Hernandez 3b Joe Giradi C Larry Bowa SS Greg Maddux (2nd stint) P Third base was really hard. I wanted Bill Madlock because he was overrated. However I wouldnt have called him a fan favorite though. Yes these guys are all gamers. Mostly worked hard and really were not as good as a lot of fans thought.
  14. I wish someone would point out a team that has "bought a ring" If you do not have player development you will not win a championship. Free agency should only be used to fill holes, not cover the whole project. I really think for the Cubs to take a step towards a championship they should keep going with the young players that they have started doing this year and do it again next year than start filling the gaps through free agency after that. Free Agents generally are late to past prime and will be paid higher dollars than they did during prime.
  15. My dad the Tiger fan really wanted to get Walker before the Padres traded for him. Now he really wished the Tigers would have made that deal instead of getting Neifi.
  16. So we have a choice between a player who we know is below average major league CFer Juan Pierre. Who happens to have a couple of ok #s(SB, BA) which are offset by not very good #s(CS, OBP). He is a poor CFer with a lousy arm. However he has probably through hard work gotten about as much out of his talent as he is going to get. Also will be overpaid which is pretty much guaranteed. Basically a very likeable player who really isnt very good like a very long list of former Cub players. OR Felix Pie who is 21, putting up very solid #s in his first year of AAA ball. Without doubt is POTENTIALLY a better player than Pierre. Actually probably already is. Are main concerns are we are rushing him to the major leagues if we bring him up next year. There however is no evidence that rushing a player to the major leagues has ever had an adverse effect on his long-term ability. Also no matter what the Cubs do next season they are not going to win the World Series so letting a young player earn his stripes and struggle in a year that we could be using for the future would make the most sense. As opposed to wait 2 years and through other building may have a World Series contender than having to work through rookie struggles. For some reason I dont understand keeping Pierre even if it is for 1 year.
  17. I would think that at least 1 WS victory would be mandatory for a manager. Using the line of reasoning that would get Dusty Baker a shot at the Hall of Fame than Lou Piniella would be the first to go. Mike Sciosia(sp) would be getting close to eligble. Heck even Bob Brenley if he was to manage a good team again. These are just modern guys I thought of off the top of my head. I am sure there has been more in baseball history who were slightly above average players and slightly above average managers for several years who are not in the Hall of Fame. Is Billy Martin even in. Burned out arms with the best of them.
  18. It was a bad play. It was a bad play when Pierre did it in the 5th also. Except Pierre didnt get caught. Attempting to steal 3rd with 2 outs is not smart baseball. I just with Dusty would have mentioned both of them instead of singleing out Theriot because he got caught.
  19. If Bynum plays more than Theriot I am going to start believing the Dusty is a racist stuff.
  20. All of this idiocy probably explains why he is a ND fan. By the way just kidding. I know plenty of idiot MSU fans as well.
  21. Leyland has had Polanco batting 2nd most of the year. I would say that he probably has better options on his team for batting 2nd then Polanco. Maybe he will bat Neifi 2nd. edit: Scratch what I said. I just looked at the Tigers team hitting stats. Though there may have been better options than Polanco batting 2nd they really arent obviously better.
  22. I would rather have Matt Murton in LF next season then Carlos Lee which seems to be the popular choice. I agree that Murton will be a very solid major league player. I have a feeling unless he really picks it up the next couple of months he will not be given an opportunity with the Cubs though.
  23. What is really funny is we got more for Neifi than we did for Todd Walker. I really like Dave Drombrowski but this is not a good move for the Tigers.
  24. I think now that Stone isnt rapped up in the booth that limits opinions, his true thoughts are coming out. I think moving Barrett to LF is a bad idea. I would even go as far as saying that if Murton was given the fulltime job in Left his OPS would be better than Barretts next year. What I dont understand is why Barrett was never even considered at 1b this year. I would rather have him at first, Blanco playing good defense at catcher than Mabry hitting about the same as Blanco and giving us decent defense at 1st. Dont you kind of see Barretts defense being one the the reasons we lose next year brewing already.
  25. dont you see Hendry using something said by one of the worst GMs ever as justification for signing Neifi to that bad contract. When asked a ? about how the A's have all their players have to get at least 1 walk in every 10 ABs before moving up in their system, Hendrys response was something like "John Kruk says the A's need another bat"
