  1. I didnt want him in 2003 and thought the team did allright in spite of him. I do agree that Hendry has done a complete butcher job on the Cubs organization since 2003
  2. The Phillies are last in the NL in hitting with runners in scoring position with 2 outs. Thru some miracle they happen to lead the league in runs scored. How is this possible?? I am sure it has nothing to do with the fact that they are 2nd in Slg and 2nd in OBP
  3. IF Bochy leads the Padres to Game 7 of the WS this year and than takes the Cubs job, I think the coincedences would be enough to make me say no.
  4. "I have no tax problems" What does that have to do with managing
  5. I think the only chance of Michigan playing OSU in the Championship game is if the final score in there game was something like 24-23 OSU winning but Michigan playing better. If Michigan beats OSU in Columbus OSU has no shot at the Championship game.
  6. I dont think Quinn was ever out of the Heisman race. Even in the lose to Michigan he still had 250 yds and 3 TD. I know he was awful during the game but come December most voters are just going to look at the #s and say he wasnt that bad. Troy Smith is not going to put up anything close to the #s Quinn will so OSU will have to go undefeated for him to have a chance. I dont think it is going to happen. So unless another candidate really steps up in the next couple of weeks I would say that Quinn is still a favorite, especially after the comeback against MSU.
  7. If the Cardinals dont make the playoffs that would be worse than about anything the Cubs have ever done. If it was anyone except Houston I would be really happy. Since it is Houston only mildly happy.
  8. Steve Stone mentioned Jim Fergosi today. I think this would be the kind of move that Hendry might make. Could believe that Fergosi could do for Cubs what Leyland did for Tigers. I dont think he would be an upgrade to Dusty.
  9. I generally think the save is an overrated stat but you have to tip your cap to Hoffman. He has been very good for awhile on a lot of teams that have not been very good.
  10. Michigan against Minnesota is a mismatch. I do think that Minnesota will do better on the ground than any other foe has so far against Michigan. I think Colorado/Missouri will be one of the most interesting games this week. I dont know how to call it but it is intreging. Great game this Sat night in Iowa. I know in last weeks thread there was a lot of talk about were Game Day will be at for some of the remainding games. Since Herbstreight does Sat night games on ABC I think he has to at least be close to wherever the game is he is doing. This is probably why they were at USC last week. I am glad Iowa gets one though. Great fans who really support their team even when they were down a couple of years ago. I hope Illinois beats MSU. I know they wont but it is kind of like cheering against the Cubs to get Baker fired.
  11. I was driving home from and work when it happened. I had to pull over because I was half crying (the actual play) half laughing(Santo's reaction on the radio).
  12. Southside and NDstops, I agree that Stanton wasnt lighting it up in the first half but at least they were passing the ball. How many times did Stanton throw in the 2nd half until the final drive? I dont know but I am guessing you can count them on your hand. NONE of them were downfield. This is exactly what they did to blow the 4th quarter lead last year at ND and the game a couple years ago at Michigan. So yes the play calling was way to conservative. That coupled by some poor reads by Stanton really cost them the game. I dont know if MSU had anyone stretching the field when Landry had his pick6 but ND had 10 guys on the line of scrimmage that play. Stanton should have checked that to a deeper route.
  13. I really think it was a mistake to start a more conservative play calling for most of the 2nd half. MSU started it in the 1st half by not calling timeouts and trying to score again before half. Than when they really needed the offense to do something they really hadnt run there complete offense since the 2nd quarter. Sadly ND defense is going to get way too much credit for this victory when it was really there offense and Smith going way to conservative.
  14. I am really sad!!!!!!!!!!! Though Stanton does deserve some blame I would rather put most of it on the coaching. Sadly MSU got most of the breaks tonight and still pulled defeat from the jaws of victory.
  15. I am happy!!!!!!!! I also am beginning to wonder how good ND really is. The game isnt over yet and MSU has a way of breaking my heart so I am going to hold my breath and cover my eyes some in the 2nd half.
  16. I might be biased but I think Stanton is one of the 5 best in the country.
  17. Yeah you dont hear too many White Sox fans complaining about Ozzie being a jerk. Is Andy MacPhail really not doing a good job? Is it his job to put a winning team on the field? or is it his job to make money? Does he control which way the organization goes in the draft? Does he intentionally value fast, flexible players over players that produce? I am not writing this to defend MacPhail, I think a lot of the problem is the Cubs do a good job of making money even with the lousy track record. IF you ran the Tribune would you get rid of a guy who makes money under bad circumstances. Heck I would keep him without even blinking an eye. The problem is we dont have an owner who cares about winning and losing as much as making money. I also think this is why the Cubs dont ever really go with youth. Why gamble on Pie being acceptable to the masses when we can wow them with Pierre and Jones, 2 likeable, mediocre players who are way over valued on Baseball Tonight.
  18. He already missed a start or 2 late last month if I remember correctly. this is certainly a tough spot for the Tigers. Bonderman has been ineffective the last month. Verlander is young and shouldnt be pitching as much. Maroth isnt "stretched out" I really think they are going to be a first round out in the playoffs. Overall I agree they would be smart to stop Verlander now. I dont think it is going to happen though
  19. If a team planted their flag on my field after they beat me in overtime, I would probably still have a lingering distaste in my mouth. I can see why Wies made a comment like this to a Alumni group. Probably not the smartest thing to say but he probably didnt expect it to come back and bite him since it was an alumni group. MSU/ND is turning into a good rivalry. I just hope that MSU can play good enough in the next few years to keep this a good rivalry. I suspect that they are going to have a hard time keeping up in a couple of years
  20. I always thought it was shocking how many people thought Omar Moreno was a good player. Juan Pierre probably isnt even as good as Omar Moreno if you consider defense and adjust offensive #s for the time period they played in. I am pretty sure that the Cubs are going to make Pierre a large offer and he will stay. I will cry almost as much as when the Cubs signed Perez last off-season. As for Dusty bashing, I do agree that 80% of all Major League managers would have started the season with Pierre batting lead-off. I think more than 80% of them would have had him out of the Lead-off spot by the beginning of June though.
  21. Also if you seen the highlight of the block in the back it had to be called something. If not a block in the back than unnessacary roughness. The Michigan player had his back turned and was just running downfield and the ND player pushed him in the back. The reason that blocking in the back is a penalty is not because it gives a team some sort of advantage. To me it would be good football to have blockers coming from where the defenders are not expecting them. The reason it is a penalty to block in the back is because it causes injuries. It has only been in my lifetime that blocking in the back has become and a penalty. Though clipping always has been. So if a player from a kicking team was to push someone in the back it is just as likely to cause injury as a player from the recieving team doing it so therefore by logic it has to be called.
  22. Thanks rynorules I think you said in a Nutshell what I was trying to say. It just took me several paragraphs.
  23. I think the White Sox need to understand that Jose Contrares had a career year last year and will probably never achieve that level again. He does however have trade value now. The White Sox pitching is just not very good this year. If I was the Sox I would let Podsednik go. Do something to get a defensive upgrade at SS. I would resign Crede and maybe move Fields in a move to help them at SS. Go with a rotation of Buerhle, Garcia, Vasquez, Garland and McCarthy. Hoping Buerhle will come back to being close to an Ace. Need to improve the Bullpen. I dont think they are that far removed from being a Championship level team. I certainly think either Buerhle or Garcia can bounce back next year. Brian Anderson will improve. I would assume that Dye will come back to earth next season. I think that Thome will not be as good but will be close. Crede could still improve though. I still think the White Sox will be contenders next season.
  24. I have a son that had a brain tumor about 6 years ago, he is doing fine. When I first found out about it it really shook my foundation as you could imagine. Just as this situation really shook Derrek. After awhile you come to the realization that life goes on and you have to go back to being normal. Right now baseball isnt important to Derrek as my job wasnt important to me for several months. After the initial shock weres off though I think Derrek will probably come to terms with this and move on.
  25. I would love to have heard him say this. I do wonder if there is a bit of sarcasim in what he is saying.
