Since it was obvious we couldnt trade Jones unless the other team took his salary also, I was for playing Jones in CF against RHers. This doesnt change the fact that Hendry signed him to a bad deal. I also think Lou has done a fine job and give him kudos. I was not always with him earlier but have changed my tune some. I will not change my tune on Hendry though. He is terrible.

Bold #1 - Because he was (still is, kinda) an amazing 1B. Bold #2 - When did you see him play OF? Again I am not even remotely saying we should move him to the OF. I was just wondering why he was never an OFer. Also he is an amazing 1b I agree. However it is 1b. As Elaine asked Keith Hernandez "Dont they put the bad players at 1b?" When I say he seems like a natural OFer, I am going by his athletism and body type. Truth is most 1bman get stuck there because they have failed in other places or are catchers who can hit. My question is did DLee fail at another position? or was he on a team with a glut of outfielders and got put at 1b for that reason? I guess it is more of of DLee history question.

I have always wondered why he isnt an OFer. Good speed, Long legs. He seems to be a natural in the OF. Was he ever an OFer? Does he not have the ability to judge fly balls? Is his arm that bad? For some of the out of the box thinking like adding Troy Glaus to play SS. This kind of move seems a lot more realistic. I am not saying the Cubs should. It just seems more realistic.

you can't win with that argument on this board. i've tried to explain that our favorite beleagured radio color man wasn't even one of the top 3 players on his own team, but have been shouted down ad nauseum and oh look, the other three guys who were "better than him" - even though when you take positional differences into account, Ronnie was probably just as good as Billy Williams - are in the Hall of Fame! And if you don't think Ronnie was ever the best player on his team, I suggest you review the team stats from 1964, 1966 and 1967. In 1969 he was arguably the best player on the team (Hands and Jenkins also come into play there). Roy Campanella Gil Hodges Jackie Robinson Pee Wee Reese Duke Snider Which two are we kicking out of the Hall of Fame? That team won at least 1 WS and the Yankees kept them from having several. The Cubs with Banks/Williams/Jenkins and Santo never even came close to the post season. I know it isnt Santo's fault but that is something that a lot of voters consider. Heck Pee Wee Reese is far from a HOFer numbers wise. He was just the captain on that great team. So winning is a important part of going to the Hall.

If Marquis was sent to AAA after the Cubs acquired Jose Contreras I sure would be up in arms about it. Pretty much the same analogy of floyd/pagan/jones over Murton. Also when Murton does get a shot and puts up a OPS better than Soriano in 2009 for whatever team he is on, will you admit you are wrong? I may be wrong about Murton, but I would rather be wrong about him based on what he has done so far in his career and only being 25, than be right about Floyd who is done as an everyday player.

I think Soriano was signed because Hendrys job was on the line and he needed to make a big free agent splash. Where he would play was just an afterthought.

He did earn his playing time. He had a .800 ops as a rookie. Most teams would have not brought in 3 guys to take his PT away after such a rookie season. To be fair though Lou has been pretty consistant with players who are slumping. Only Koyie Hill seems to be above this. I think though a Murton and Hill/Marshall better get something more than Church. Church is only marginally better than Murton and Hill and Marshall are PROVEN major league starters. Who exactly would you have starting for us if this move was made.

I am going out on a limb here because I am going to say this without looking it up. The Sutter/Durham trade was far from a fleece. I would even go as far as saying that trade might have been tothe Cubs advantage. Again this was without actually looking up numbers. I think adding Encarcerated would be a terrible idea. So it wouldnt surprise me if Hendry did it.

I think you are right about Bonds having the same post record reputation as these others. I think you ought to consider though that expansion in the past has increased HR output, combine that with the smaller parks and there is more to this HR record than just steroids. That and that pitchers are using just as much as hitters. Another thing that I would like to mention is that it is just a personal record. The Oakland As won a WS in 89 with a admitted user on their team. They have not been stripped of their title. If baseball was serious about stopping this games would be forfeited for players using. Owners, GMs, Managers and fans need to be somewhat accountable here also. Most of us here had to at least strongly suspect Sosa back in 98. I sure did. Mike North mentioned it several times if I remember. I surely didnt see Cub fans denouncing Sosa en masse until his production started to slide. If games were subject to be forfeited because of this, we sure would have been on him. So would have Riggleman. The Giants wouldnt put up with Bonds if games were subject to be forfeited, The Yankees wouldnt put up with some of their guys, The Tigers wouldnt put up with their guys and so on and so on.

I have been for the Cubs acquiring Nady for a couple of years. Last year before the Cubs went south I was hoping they would get him to platoon with Jones. Sadly right now he is probably at his peak value. Having his best year. I am not sure what the Pirates want for him, but it would probably be more than the Cubs could have given the Mets last year for him.

I wish he could show me how much steroids and/or HGH helped Bonds. Its easy to say I am sickened because he broke records using drugs. What would he have done if not for the drugs? What would he have done if noone in baseball was on drugs? All of this is pure conjecture. Put him in. While they are at it put in Sosa and McGwire.

If steroids and HGH were readily available back in the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s I am guessing there would have been a large amount of players using then. I also dont think that the HR record would be much higher. 10. Lastly and the one that really has always gotten under my skin a little. No one questions any of Brett Favres records and soon to be records. Would he have been able to perform back in the day if he wasnt using un-perscribed Vicoden. What is kind of funny of all those games is that Dusty actually takes out his regulars and puts in bench players before he takes out his starting pitcher.

I dont agree with most of you post. I want to take a different angle though and probably come to the same conclusion about Dunn with the Cubs. I think Hendry agrees with your post, So there is probably no chance of the Cubs getting Dunn. I also wouldnt completely rule out Milwaukees chances on resigning Dunn if they traded for him. He would put Milwakee past the way past the Cubs in terms of lineup. Also adding Dunn would create a buzz in Milwaukee that would really give them a boost the rest of this season. If they were to be contenders for the next several years they would probably draw enough to compensate for him. As for Houston, it was also widely assumed that Buerhle was going to be a Cardinal. Not the same guy but just an example of assumptions.

Because this has become a new mantra for major league baseball. You have to have a good bullpen to win championships. Also since everyone has heard the name Dotel, that makes him better than AAA guys you have never heard of. This and the "need to get ARam some protection in the lineup" are just things that most people readily agree with because you hear the media and commentaries saying these things all the time. So they must be true. So if Hendry gets us a "name" in the bullpen and some protection for ARam(again a "name") he will be precieved as doing a good job.

I wish the Cubs would have given the Yankees a sore arm pitcher for him than given Soriano 8 yrs. Of course he is an idiot. Smart teams can focus on what he brings instead of the idiot factor. Like Rodman with the Bulls.

I cant think of any reason that adding Contresas would be a good move. He probably isnt a major upgrade over any of our existing starters. He would bring a major payroll bump. If Marshall or Hill were moved for a bat than it kind of makes sense. Still if you combine the bat with Contreras that would really make our payroll go thru the roof. Would there be money for Z if all this happens?

I remember the Cubs being the first team to 8000 wins. I think it happened in the late 70s or early 80s. Shocking how many wins the Giants have put on us since then.
