I was one of those people. That was total insanity and I enjoyed every minute of it. I thought it might be time to mention it in this thread also. So Penn St fans are excited because App St did something Penn St hasnt done in what 10 yrs? Michigan is in your conference. It is only going to make you guys look crappy if Michigan loses in non-conference games. Yet you guys get more excited about this then if you actually beat Michigan yourselves. Of course most Penn St fans younger than 25 probably dont remember the last time Penn St beat Michigan. How does it make Penn State look bad? They haven't lost to Michigan this season. If they lose, then it will hurt them in the voting a bit depending on what Michigan does the rest of the way. If they win, the impact will be quite minimal. And the impact on recruiting probably overshadows that easily. Most Big Ten fans hate rival conference schools and want to see them suffer. I wouldn't have it any other way. I dont. I am a Michigan St fan and would love to see Michigan go 0-8 in the conference after going 4-0 during the non-conference. To me the conference is a second loyalty. Of course my team has sucked for several years and I have to grasp on to something. Secondly except for Wisconsin, Penn St is my least favorite Big Ten school. They came in the conference and "were going to dominate it year in and year out" and only have 2 title to show for it. They "dont sink to the levels of scum that the other schools do" yet it sure seems like a lot of their players have been arrested in the last 10 years also. Penn St has just as much crappy things go on as Ohio St and Michigan, yet most of their fans somehow think they are on some higher ethical plain. At least most OSU and Michigan fans are honest about their scumbags. Lastly for how great Penn ST is. I do believe that every Big Ten school except Indiana has beaten Michigan since the last time Penn St has. So if they have to get excited because a Div 1aa school had to beat Michigan, I think that just shows how low they have sunken. Dont get me wrong I was cheering for App St at the end of that game. I just am not relishing in it like some others. I want my school to beat Michigan because we are the best. Not because Michigan is not very good.

Surely you didn't think we traded for Monroe for him to not hit before Murton? I am positive that there were some in the transaction thread who said Monroe was replacing Pagan. I know most were not that naive but there were some.

I like that you cheer for your conference though. I find it amazing how many Big Ten fans would rather Michigan and OSU lose in non-conference games. Not realizing this only make their school look even crappier. So who are some teams that impressed people in the first day of college football. Besides the obvious ones. I was really impressed by Georgie Tech. Could end up in the Top Ten I was really happy with Michigan St. I didnt know what to expect from us or UAB. MSU has the talent to be a bowl team. Hopefully they can change from their annual plunge once the Big Ten season starts. I think Auburn is obviously overrated but I was impressed with Kansas Sts defense.

Juice was 6/9 and was looking pretty exceptional before he got hurt. Juice wouldn't have fumbled twice and wouldn't have thrown that pick in the end zone at the end of the game. And I told you that Missouri wasn't going to blow out the Illini  And if Gary Pinkel wasn't an ass, it wouldn't have been close. Doesn't matter. A win is a win, regardless of how ugly it is. When we ran the ball twice in a row on 2nd and 3rd and 1, I was speechless. [semi-irrational rant to crazy talk depending on who's reading]Also, to play blind homer who didn't have much replay benefit, did Mizzou get hosed several times during the game? There were two 3rd down plays that it appeared were caught and then the ball came out after they were down, but both were ruled incomplete. I also thought it looked like Daniel's arm was coming forward on the fumble, we got shafted several times with bogus Pass Interference calls, and U of I didn't get 2 Delay of Games called on their last possession.[/semi-irrational rant to crazy talk depending on the reader] Williams and Daniel both gave textbook examples of why QB's need to slide. In Daniel's case he was already 5 yards past the first down marker, just go to your knee already and stop giving me heart palpitations. The only call that I thought was really questionable the entire game was the Head to Head hit on Juice Williams which was followed by a Personal foul face masking on the same play.(announcers seemed to not even notice the obvious face mask) Neither was called. I was cheering for Illinois but certainly am not a Illinois fan. So I dont think I had any homer glasses on. I really think Illinois was probably the more talented team. If Zook can get them to clean up their mistakes. Look out.

I didnt see todays game. Was there a good reason that Piniella didnt play Murton over Monroe today? I would certainly understand if Monroe was really hitting well and Murton wasnt but that is not the case. Just wondering.
-
The only bad thing about this is that when they kill us (which will push us to 0-3 by the way, because there's no way in the world that we're beating you guys next week), it'll be doubly depressing. I think Georgia Tech deserves some credit. I really think they are going to be a surprise team this year. I was really impressed by their defense and Offensive line. Man they would easily be a Top Ten team if Calvin Johnson had come back

When things are blue and not going so good for you at least you can say "Its still better than Michigan"
-
Whens the last time Michigan and Notre Dame were both unranked when they play? I could easily see them both O-2 in a couple of weeks.
-
I knew Michigan was vulnerable, but I didn't realize just how much. Go Illini! Me too, I knew they were overrated. The thing is though, I think App State is a serious contender for their championship. A part of this has to be stupid scheduling. Christ just play Central Michigan and enjoy your week 1 win. Didnt Michigan originally have Ball St or someone else from the MAC on their schedule this year. Only to knock them off and schedule App st instead.
-
I dont have the Big Ten Network, I was following on my computer, Why did App St kick a FG on first down with 30 secs left. Coach almost cost his team a major upset. I think the only thing that saves Carr his job is for Michigan to somehow win a National Title. I can pretty much rule that out as an option.

Tennessee beat the crap out of Cal last year. Also, sure the Big Ten took 2 of 3 against the SEC last year but their top 2 teams got absolutely waxed in their bowl games. Last year, and probably again this year, it's the top four (OSU, Wisc, UM, PSU) and then the rest is crap. Purdue and Minnesota were 5 and 6 in the Big 10 last year - do you really they would stand a chance against any of Tennessee/Georgia/Auburn/LSU/Arkansas (depending on who you consider to be #5 and #6 in the SEC in 06)? Of course not. Oh, and the Big 10 went 2-5 in the bowls last year. Overrated. I think the SEC is the best conference year-in and year-out, though the Big Ten is generally close. So, you know where I'm coming from. However, I'd like to note a few things: First, Michigan lost to USC by 14. USC is a completely different ballgame. Last three times USC has played an SEC team: won at Arkansas 50-14 last season, beat Arkansas 70-17 in 2005, won at Auburn 23-0 in 2003. No, Michigan wasn't terribly competitive with the Trojans last season, but the SEC has actually faired much worse (and two of the above three games featured good SEC teams). Second, while Iowa was "crap" last year -- though they nearly knocked off Texas in their bowl -- until proven incorrect, that must be considered a hiccup. They're a solid team that has gone 2-1 against the SEC in bowls the last for years (beating Florida and LSU, while dropping one to Florida). The Rose Bowl is also a "Home" game for USC. I think if USC played a game in Chicago against Michigan in late November the outcome would be a lot different. I would venture to say the same for Florida against OSU, even though last years game was probably closer to OSU than Florida. Also soccer I did say in a later post that the SEC is probably the best conference year in and year out. I just dont think they are as superior as they think they are. In a later post I also said that as long as the NCAA is going to keep this crap BCS, then they need to take more control of scheduling to help eliminate the crap scheduling that a lot of big time schools do. In my post I never say that the SEC isnt the best conference. I just have heard several SEC coaches use this Superior conference excuse for not scheduling good teams. So your whole counter arguement wasnt even directed at anything I wrote. I didnt say the Big Ten, Pac 10 or anyone was better. Lastly if we are going to use Bowl games as a judge of whos the better conference the Big Ten and SEC are 11-11 since 1999 against each other. Most of these games of course being in SEC territory. I havent checked the SEC's record against other conferences in bowl games since then. I would use this to show that maybe just maybe the SEC isnt quite as superior as their coaches, their fans and ESPN would have everyone believe.

You got your 3 team parlay.
-
Is it just me or has Murton really been filling out recently? He looks about 20 lbs heavier than last year.
-
Bitter? I could go on to try and defend the SEC, but something tells me I couldn't convince you otherwise. It's just old ass tired argument that no opposing views will see eye-to-eye on. Yeah I was being a little hostile. Its not that I dont think the SEC is the best conference. They probably are year in year out the best conference. I am just saying that in any given year they are not superior to some other conferences. Even in that it really doesnt make a difference who is better. The problem I have is that SEC schools in the past have used this "Our Conference is Superior" excuse not to schedule better. I hope in the future they will do better scheduling. As long as ESPN has annointed them the Superior Conference though, They probably dont see the point.

This is usually one of those yearly debates along the lines of "Does Notre Dame belong in a BCS game" Truthfully I think if the NCAA is going to keep the BCS system they need to get more control of Regular Season scheduling. I think a great idea would be for the NCAA to mandate every conference to go head to head against 2 other conferences each year. Make 1 of the conferences a BCS conference and 1 a non-BCS conference. Like this year you could have Big East/Big Ten , ACC/SEC and Big 12/Pac 10. It can rotate every year. Than line each of these conferences up against 1 non-BCS conference. Then let the University Pres, Coaches and ADs seed the teams in their conference. Than let 1 play 1 and so on. This would give BCS voters a better feel of how good each conference is. Its not perfect and still leaves a lot of room for debate. But like I said if we are going to keep the BCS system than a better way has to be made to come up with the most deserving teams. I dont think tweeking the system is the answer as much as forcing more games among the elite teams.

Good for them. Here in lies the problem. The SEC has annually used this "guantlet" as an excuse not to schedule decent non-conference games. A lot of their bowl games are "quasi" home games. Yet the Big Ten still took 2 out of 3 last year against the SEC. Also I wouldnt have a problem lining Purdue and Iowa up against SC and Alabama. When the SEC starts to prove how great they are by consistently scheduling good non-conference game, then I will believe the hype. So good for LSU and Tennessee for starting to improve their non-conference schedule. I guess If the SEC is so superior they should have no problems with Cal and Va Tech. If the SEC is so darn superior, maybe the SEC title game should just be the National title game and everyone else should just play for "Rest of the Nation Title"
-
The schedule is definitely in our favor, but last year we had Auburn, Florida, Arkansas, and Tennessee on the road. it really doesn't matter though. if you assume that in a perfect world the tigers have a 75% chance of beating each of those teams, the probability that they go undefeated is just 32%. Throw in the title game and the probability is down to 24%. thats the problem with the sec. its a gauntlet like no other. les miles was right. Really. You think if Florida, Arkansas and Auburn were replaced by Michigan, Penn St and Wisconsin it would be easier. Dont forget Wisconsin beat Arkansas last year in a bowl game and has most of their team back. Again I am saying that the supposed SEC guantlet isnt remarkably tougher than other BCS conferences. Mostly just more ESPN hype.

8/31 Cubs (Marshall) V. Astros (WANDY) 1:20CT WGN

I think Illinois may surprise. I think they are better than Mizzou is giving them credit. Hoping Murton gets the start today against LHer. -
Which Brewer do you hate the most?
NewUserName replied to Schwarber Fan's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
Kevin Mench. Just because the Cubs actually walked him earlier this year. -

forminable ??? OK, how about better than the Cubs. -
Doesnt he still have a couple of years left on his contract? If this is his last year on his contract then I wouldnt be against getting him if the price was nothing. Sounds like the O's want something in return though. edit: Okay I just thought about it for a minute. If we added Traschel the next time Hill or Marshall had a questionable start they probably would be removed from the rotation. So I am against adding Traschel.

Anyone else noted how much Lee has been striking out lately
NewUserName replied to professahesse's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
I have always wondered how good Lee would be if the umpires called his strikezone. Its obvious that most umpires dont adjust their strikezone up and down for the height of the hitter. Lee seems to get a lot of strikes called on him that are about mid ankle. -

If Sheets can help stabilize their pitching, Watch out. They still have a forminable lineup.
