  1. His 1.33 WHIP, 2.70 ERA, and 166 ERA+ beg to differ with the definition of "good". Honestly, when Eyre comes back, it should be one of Eyre/Cotts/Lieber that's most likely gone.
  2. When was the last time the Cubs swept the Reds? I bet it has been awhile. July 2004. So, really, the last time they had a good team.
  3. It's about the same. Although, I am really down on the Giants. I think the difference between the Giants/Nats and any other team in the league is bigger than the difference between the Cubs and any other team in the league. Which makes going 3-4 against them all the most frustrating to this point.
  4. The method to my madness: - The Braves, even as much as they've struggled, are still only 6 games out, and have a better run differential than the Mets. They've played better this year than the D-backs, Dodgers or Marlins. I basically put the magic number for "gonna be a stretch" at 10 games at this point. - The Cardinals, as much as they're expected to fall apart, haven't yet. Compared to the D-backs who have fallen apart but built a big enough lead that they somehow still hold a playoff spot, I believe the Cardinals are in better shape (despite a guaranteed spot out of the West anyway). - The D-backs and Dodgers, though tied for the division lead, are both playing poorly and have been unable to put any team in their division away. I also believe the Padres and Rockies are much better teams than they've been this first half, so I really think it's a 4-team race to be the least ugly team in that division. - Despite the Giants' record, their offense is pitiful, and outside of Lincecum and an occasional Cain gem, their pitching can't keep them in games forever. The fact they're only 11 games under .500 should be considered a huge success for that team. - The Reds, Pirates and Astros are still in much better shape to make a run at the wildcard than any team out of the West.
  5. To me, comedies and romance stories are movies never meant to be seen alone. Superhero films? I can and will see those alone.
  6. Ratatouille or The Incredibles right now are the two movies I'd pop in and watch at any moment given the chance. Haven't seen Wall-E yet, though. Monsters, Inc., A Bug's Life, Cars, and Finding Nemo are probably on the low end of the spectrum for me. Not sure where Toy Story/2 fit in there.
  7. If I had to gauge teams' chances to make the playoffs in the NL at this point in the season, it'd go something like: 1. Cubs ------------ 2. Phillies 3. Brewers 4. Mets 5. Cardinals ------------- 6. Braves 7. Diamondbacks 8. Dodgers 9. Marlins -------------- 10. Rockies 11. Padres 12. Reds 13. Astros 14. Pirates 15. Giants 16. Nationals The only team that would have even close to a playoff guarantee at this point would be the Cubs, and even then there are a good 80 games to go before the talk is even reasonable.
  8. PANIC WE MADE THE WRONG PICK NO! Rose is such a bust. Wait, that was supposed to be in all caps.
  9. Still a lot of season to be playing to guarantee anything, especially with the Mets starting to wake up, the Phillies far underplaying their Pythagorean, the Cardinals still holding strong, and the Brewers overplaying their Pythagorean to this point. Oh, and the Cubs still being 4 games up on the league, even after a rough road stretch. Sure, the Brewers are one of the more talented teams in the NL this year, but it doesn't guarantee anything.
  10. Every time I watch that game I wonder where the hell Girardi is going. If Gutierrez scores, the game is over, so it doesn't matter if Girardi was on first or second.
  11. There's a few if's here, but IF Hill can return to a semblance of last year's production in the second half, and Lilly is really not as bad as he was early in the year (i.e. a 4.00 ERA pitcher instead of a 6.00 ERA pitcher), a rotation of Zambrano Dempster (who I expect will fall off at least a bit in the second half, might want to give him a few off-days to keep him fresh) Lilly Hill Marshall/Gallagher would be plenty fine, really. The only catch is finding a way to get Marquis out of the rotation unless he really has figured something out in his delivery, of which I remain skeptical unless he can do better than a 60% QS rate. Worrying about the Brewers is pointless, even with a CC acquisition. If these Brewers really have turned a corner and aren't just playing a bit over their heads right now, that still makes 3 really good teams in the NL, and they aren't all in the Central. The Cubs need to simply focus on continuing to play .600 ball over the course of the year. 98 wins will make the playoffs one way or another. If the Brewers somehow stay on fire and win 100+, then they will simply earn the division title. What everyone else does really doesn't matter at that point.
  12. If Braun is in the field, he's already out of position (ba-dum-psh!)
  13. It does seem weird that the Cardinals haven't even been to Wrigley yet this year, and won't until the second week of August.
  14. Meh, there are only 10 more road games in July, too. August, now there's a month with a lot of home games.
  15. That was a nice 2-strike pitch to Lee. No way to hit that unless you're Soriano/Vlad.
  16. Rockies win 18-17, coming back from a 13-4 deficit.
  17. Broncos just made the extra point to tie up the Dolphins 17-17.
  18. I'm a little surprised Ernie Banks isn't on that list.
  19. Geez, even guys like Phil Cavaretta spent a year with another team (was going to suggest him for OF since he played some there, but he played a year with the WSox). So...an outfield of Murton, Pie and Eric Patterson/Micah Hoffpaiur...?
  20. What? No Kerry Wood? :)
  21. I'm definitely of the mindset that almost anyone can be a good RB if the line can block correctly and well. So, Forte's (and the rest of the running game) success will depend more on the line than it will on the backs themselves.
  22. Here's a question we've been pondering here at work today: Assuming Pete Rose were HOF eligible, would he even be the best player not in the Hall? It may seem absurd to think Santo was actually better than Rose (who absolutely has Santo beat on longevity, for better or worse), but statistically Santo actually has an edge in non-counting stats. Although, I'm the kind of person that thinks Rose is one of the most overrated players in baseball history, a glorified slap-hitter over the last 15 years of his career with a good eye.
  23. Ronny's been late a lot on fastballs lately.
  24. Just need to keep being patient. Even without Soriano, Ramirez and Theriot, the gap between lineups is large enough where they should be able to break through at some point. As long as Marquis doesn't blow things up, they are still in good shape.
  25. That strikeout call finally gives Marquis more strikes thrown than balls.
