  1. It's only a win-win situation for the Cubs if they also win.
  2. Actually, both the Cubs and the fans only have one team to worry about, and that's the Cubs. If the Cubs play as well as they can and should, there's no need to worry about any other team, as the Cubs will eliminate them all by themselves.
  3. Giants/Rams is the national game? Maybe they just think viewers are more interested in seeing the defending Super Bowl champs look good than in an actual exciting game.
  4. Quick Reads for the week, courtesy of Football Outsiders on ESPN. Rankings for the QB, RB, and WR/TE performances for the week, adjusted for situation and opponent.
  5. FO's weekly Any Given Sunday article for week 1 (the article where they dissect the biggest upset of the week). Guess which game was the candidate for week 1?
  6. Actually, it's more wildly inaccurate to base it completely on results so far. Statistical projections also aren't perfect, but it's better than the idea that the Falcons are the second best team in the league simply because they looked good against the Lions. true, but I guess I thought there might be some way to extrapolate from last year. preseason is a horrible barometer I think you misunderstand. They aren't using statistics based on preseason data, they put together statistical projections for the year based on the prior year, similar to PECOTA for baseball. That's what they use as a factor until week 8.

  8. And just for posterity, I think 18th is about right for them at this point.
  9. DVOA statistics from Football Outsiders. Certainly little meaning after one week (Atlanta is #2), but surprisingly the weakest aspect of the Bears statistically right now is the defense. Adjusted for early variation (DAVE), the Bears are ranked 18th. how the hell do you read that? Simplified: Based on raw data from one week, overall (VOA - positive is above average, negative is below average): 1 PHI 110.10% 2 ATL 81.50% 3 DEN 81.00% 4 DAL 72.80% 5 BUF 71.00% 6 BAL 69.60% 7 PIT 59.00% 8 NE 40.80% 9 NYG 32.30% 10 ARI 31.00% 11 GB 29.10% 12 CHI 16.40% 13 SD 13.00% 14 NYJ 12.20% 15 TEN 10.30% 16 NO 8.40% 17 CAR -0.10% 18 TB -8.20% 19 IND -15.30% 20 JAC -22.30% 21 SF -24.40% 22 MIN -29.70% 23 MIA -32.80% 24 WAS -33.20% 25 KC -37.20% 26 HOU -59.60% 27 CIN -71.00% 28 CLE -73.80% 29 SEA -74.80% 30 OAK -76.70% 31 DET -78.40% 32 STL -101.70% Factoring in statistical projections from the preseason (DAVE - still positive above average, negative below average): 1 PHI 41.00% 2 GB 35.80% 3 NE 25.90% 4 SD 25.10% 5 MIN 18.20% 6 DAL 17.70% 7 TB 17.10% 8 IND 15.90% 9 PIT 11.80% 10 DEN 10.80% 11 BAL 9.80% 12 NYG 8.80% 13 JAC 7.10% 14 SEA 6.50% 15 CAR 3.90% 16 ARI 2.00% 17 NO 1.60% 18 CHI -0.30% 19 TEN -1.30% 20 NYJ -3.30% 21 BUF -6.10% 22 HOU -8.50% 23 CIN -8.90% 24 WAS -11.70% 25 KC -18.80% 26 CLE -19.30% 27 MIA -22.40% 28 DET -27.40% 29 SF -27.50% 30 ATL -28.40% 31 OAK -29.00% 32 STL -34.80%

  11. Because he wanted to, and he's capable of typing? Wait. Brewers fans are capable of typing? Wowowowowow! Well, I guess I can only say with certainty that this particular Brewer fan is capable of typing, if you really wanted to get technical. :)
  12. Only one early game involving 2 undefeated teams, and it's 2 of the 3 biggest underdogs from week 1. I wonder if Fox is considering making it the featured game of the week. Doubtful, but there aren't any other games that are obviously more interesting. I could see Indy/Minnesota being the featured game, as both were expected to contend this year and probably still are, and one of them will go 0-2. AFC road team means CBS game. Ahh, right. I always get that backwards.

  15. I really like this game, do you guys play OSU this year? Yes, Wisconsin plays Ohio State, Penn State and Illinois all at Wisconsin this year.
  16. But looking at the schedule, did they look like a better team than Minnesota, Green Bay, Philadelphia, Tennessee, Jacksonville, New Orleans, Tampa or Detroit? Detroit was a better team last year, and New Orleans was looking to be much improved. The Bears didn't look much like an improved team. All those 8 teams? Those were the home games. The only real winnable games looked to be the ones vs. Detroit, and the games at Atlanta and St. Louis. Sure, the possibility existed of stealing wins against unprepared teams, but 7 wins against that slate was asking a bit much, I think. Considering the offseason, preseason, and line issues, they looked to be one of the 4-5 worst teams in the NFC, and the rest played in the NFC West. Now? If they play like they did Sunday all year, they could sneak into the upper half of the NFC with Dallas, Philly, New York, Green Bay, Minnesota, and whoever the best team in the NFC South decides to be (NO/Carolina/Tampa).
  17. Here's something that I found interesting--the 10 teams that have bullied patsies most often over the last 10 years. Three guesses as to the conference that has the most entrants in that top 10 list. Although, Minnesota has apparently only played 2 BCS non-conference opponents over the past 10 years, which is frightful. Then again, the way they've played the past few years, they really don't need to be making the schedule more difficult.
  18. Kind of fun that the Bears get to play the two teams that last knocked them out of the playoffs to start the year. Albeit different teams. I'm concerned about Rosario duplicating his effort from this week. I think a key to the Bears looking so good on defense was Dallas Clark going down so early. The Bears' D has historically been picked apart in the flat to the tight end, and that ended up just not being possible with Clark out, allowing them to focus on avoiding the run and the deep ball. Once the Colts went to Wayne in the flat, they were able to move the ball pretty well. After that, I'm not sure whether the Bears adjusted to that, or the Colts abandoned the strategy, because it basically stopped happening after the third quarter.
  19. that is some hardcore linking going on right there. I like to get all the pointless opinions confined to one post. :)
  20. It's official, Brady is out for the year. NFL talking heads already looking for a new bandwagon to hop on.
  21. Really? Not saying you're wrong, but where have you read/heard that talk? Peter King, specifically. Not the most reputable of sources or analysis, but at least getting a mention in the upper echelon already.
  22. The Bears are somehow already on the "Best of the NFC" radar after Sunday's game, along with the entire NFC East, New Orleans and Carolina. I'm still approaching the season with guarded optimism and low expectations to this point. They could still very easily be 1-3 after four weeks, and yet still not be a bad team.
  23. Yeah, would have been quite a day for suicide pools had New England, Indy, Jacksonville and San Diego all lost week 1.
  24. My expectations have been officially revised from historic failure to the 2001 Carolina Panthers. In that season the Panthers began the season with a road win vs. the previous year's NFC Championship runner up (the Vikings), only to lose the next 15 games in disappointing fashion. I also like to keep expectations as low as possible for as long as possible to avoid expecting too much.
  25. Just a bit :) The biggest surprise on the game was the running game on a whole. Forte was awesome but the O Line was making nice blocks and executing the plays as well. Just hope they can continue to do so because Orton is gonna need all the time he can get if he thinks he can pass. Certainly looking a lot more like a 1-15 season after last night.
