  1. You don't think that this expansion would make the tournament horribly watered down and make the regular season pretty much worthless? No, not really. If anything, it will give more exposure to schools outside the big 6, and give most, if not all of them more winnable games than they have now. It would give a little exposure to the handful of extra mid-majors that get in every year and I don't see how that matters all that much. Most of the bids are just going to go to Big 6 schools. And how would this not make the regular season for Big 6 schools pretty much worthless? The regular season is largely irrelevant already for a lot of them and this would only make it worse. I think you're underestimating how many non-major conference teams this would benefit. Look at this year's NIT field. There were 25 at-large quality selections for the 32-team field (7 teams were only there due to winning their conference regular season). Of the 25, it was a 14-11 distribution of big 6 conference teams to other teams. If you want to restrict it to better than .500 teams, that eliminates a few other possibilities. All told, I'd guess at least half of the additional 32 teams would be from smaller conferences.

  3. Here's a series of articles on how to make the NCAA tournament better: Link 9 articles, 5 say to expand the tournament, 1 says to leave as is, 1 says to make the selection show more like the NBA draft, 1 says to make it less corporate attendance and more student attendance, and 1 apparently didn't get what the assignment was about.
  4. This is why I hate the practice of adding fake players before they are actually available on the CBS database. I went ahead and wasted a waiver pick on Miller because there he was....available or so I thought. Why did you waste a waiver pick. Just pick him up. Everyone is a free agent as of now and not required to waste your waiver slot to pick them up. The only free agents that should cost you a waiver pick are guys who were dropped during this current week. I drafted Miller.
  5. Here's what I posted in February:
  6. Nope, I like it. How can you look at how this tournament played out and be in favor of this? We're looking at the results of a pretty much perfect playoff system; I just don't see why it needs to be tweaked at all What is it about this tournament that can't be played out with a 96-team tourney?
  7. I know there was a thread somewhere where I outlined the things I liked about it. Can't find it now, though.
  8. Really, if you're going to expand, why not just do the opening round Tuesday-Wednesday of the first week? Three rounds the first week, and then you're right back on schedule. Or, heck, start a week earlier and do just the opening round, while the bye teams have the opening weekend "off".
  9. Good enough for me. The Bears select Jon Asamoah, OG, Illinois.
  10. OK, Bears options... If we're going best player available, I like guys like Toby Gerhart (RB, Stanford), Alex Carrington (DE, Ark St), or Jon Asamoah (OG, Illinois). If we're going unknown flyers with talent, I like Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (CB, Indiana of Pennsylvania, injury concerns), Jared Veldheer (OT, Hillside), or even Tony Washington (OT, Abilene Christian). I'm also open to other suggestions, as well. The Bears have needs practically everywhere but QB.
  11. Well, if you're going to misspell a name, do it enough so it's obvious it was on purpose.
  12. NCAA to strip Duke of all 08-09 losses.
  13. I don't know where you could find it in the spring, or if it's even possible given the lack of detailed PBP. Last year it was 17.7%, 20.5% at Daytona and 16.8% at Tennessee. Yeah, I don't know of any place that keeps track of spring PBP trajectory (although I might be able to find something with the raw data). I'm just curious if his LD% was increasing or if he's getting a bunch of seeing-eye grounders. I'm sure with a near .600 BABIP, he's getting more than his fair share, but if his LD% was sitting really high this string, then I have at least a sliver of hope he'll be productive at the plate this year.
  14. Besides the whole, "Congratulations on the NCAA Tournament berth" to Illinois after the game against Wisconsin, I agree. It's not Lav's fault garbage teams like UTEP and Utah St were put in. No, but I still cringed when he said it.
  15. This guy looks like a winner.
  16. I added the real Trout and dropped the fake one. I would like to add the real Shelby Miller, but for some reason he's on Clint's team. I dropped the fake one.
  17. Just curious, what is Colvin's LD% this spring? Last year in the minors?
  18. If we restarted the draft now, I'd probably laugh a bit.
  19. There are rumors of Rod Strickland heading back to his alma mater to coach DePaul. Now that is a name that sounds a lot more likely to actually happen.
  20. Because it's not as much of a sham in places other than USC.
  21. He outright lied about the Deon Thomas incident. The NCAA found that nothing Pearl claimed was true. He was let go from Iowa for that very reason, and was in coaching purgatory for years as a result. But yeah, he's never been investigated for cheating. Bold-faced lies are well into the realm of shady, though.
  22. Because Pearl has had teams who have had to vacate 2 Final Fours and left two teams on probation? So baseless accusation is the same thing as TWO instances of NCAA punishment? Really? There has likely never- ever- been a coach under more scrutiny than Pearl, and despite this, the NCAA has never had reason to sniff around at Tennessee under him. But, by all means, let's compare him to a coach who's never been to a Final 4, despite having taken two separate teams to one. and lets not forget Pearl spent a lot of time in coaching purgatory for his mistake in the Deon Thomas affair.....and most Illinois fans seem to forget that they got put on probation for legitimate violations and still retained the assistant coach who was most responsible for the violations. Name the legitamate violations. Lack of institutional control: the most subjective punishment levied out by the NCAA.
  23. West Virginia's weakness on D is 3-point defense. Kentucky was ill-equipped to take advantage.
  24. If Baylor and Tennessee make the Final Four, that would make 3 first time FF participants and a fourth that hasn't been there since 1959.
  25. One guy I know is doing a different kind of pool where 16 guys buy in and each gets a 1-4 seed, a 5-8 seed, a 9-12 seed, and a 13-16 seed, and you win money based on how far your teams go (you break even at having an elite eight team). His 1-4 seed is WVU and his 5-8 seed is Butler.
