I guess I'll just have to hope the Bulls don't play every game like they played tonight. Hard to imagine, though, since I'm sure this game is more meaningful than the previous 54, and I'm sure it indicates a trend. Like that 30 point loss to the Magic in the first game Boozer was back.

Word on the Twitter is that Williams is livid about the trade, and didn't want to board the plane out of Utah. Not that he refuses to go to NJ, but that he didn't hear anything about it until he watched it on SportsCenter this morning.

I count two posters that were in favor of trading for Carmelo at basically any cost, and one of them thought that Rose wasn't a #1 player on a championship team and Noah was a role player, and the other thought Deng was awful and beyond useless. The general consensus was that if Deng was going to continue to take awful shots and miss half the season, Anthony would provide the shooting that a terrible Bulls shooting team coming into the season would need. Almost nobody was willing to part with Noah for him, but wanted the team to be able to work out a deal involving Deng and possibly Gibson for him, sacrificing defense (which the Bulls excelled at even last year) for offense (which the Bulls were just flat out awful at last year). Turns out, though, that Deng can be good when he doesn't take all low-percentage shots (although it'd be nice if there were another viable SF on the roster so Thibs wouldn't run him into the ground), Rose has progressed into a superstar, Boozer provides just the kind of low-post offense the Bulls needed, and Thibs knows how to draw up actual offenses in ways VDN couldn't even dream about. The glaring need is now at SG, and getting consistent offensive threat out of a guard other than Rose. Korver does that, but there's not enough Korver to get offense for the whole game.

The window expanded for them because Rondo ended up better than most were anticipating. In addition, NBA players are more effective as they age in recent times, for some reason. Allen had been declining and then revived somewhat this year. However, general consensus is that Garnett, Allen and Pierce are due for a steep decline very soon. At that point, the team is building around Rondo and probably one of Perkins/Davis, and would be sorely in need of shooters and slashers (similar to the Bulls last year, except Deng is actually doing it this year).

I think I still might take Garnett over Noah this year (in terms of basketball ability), but certainly Noah going forward. If Pau counts as a center, I'd take him ahead of Noah, too. Love is also a really good player, and is in the discussion. Noah is a top 25 NBA player, though, for sure, and a definite all-star.

WARP, PER, WS82, WS/48 work for you, then? Not really. Numbers are nice but just because baseball has been boiled down to an equation doesn't mean basketball stats are nearly as descriptive. Melo's easily more than "not very valuable" So what you're saying is you like numbers until they disagree with you, and then they are useless to you. Hell, there are even numbers that suggest that Melo's value this year is less than Billups'. The primary reason all these metrics are valuing Carmelo so low is that his sole value is in his shooting, and he hasn't done that well this year. Thus the reference to his TS%. Rather than look solely at this year, though, I thought it'd be fairer to look at his projections over the next 3 years, as he's quite certainly having an off year this year. To see him behind so many players in WARP projections is odd, which is why I don't consider him a top 10 player. Top 25, sure, but not top 10.

When the alternative is an overpaid Deng coming off 3 subpar years, a player like Anthony being available is a major step up. After 6 months of sustained good play from Deng, and a drop-off from Melo, even a straight-up swap wasn't so obvious anymore. Carmelo Anthony is a really good one-on-one iso offensive player. He's also a decent rebounder. He does nothing else, though, and when all you do is shoot and your TS% is comparative to Jamal Crawford and Kirk Hinrich, you are not very valuable. And Derrick Rose, too. Don't forget about him. ETA: I was being a wise ass. No dissertations on the greatness of Derrick Rose please. Holy taking a quote out of context, batman. Might want to consider the whole sentence.

Not better than them at what? Basketball. Just a quick eyeball, based on the 50 players Bill Simmons listed in his "Most Valuable players" trade column, here are the ones projected to be more valuable via WARP than Anthony over the next 3 years (keep in mind, the next 3 years is the heart of Anthony's prime): Dwight Howard, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, Blake Griffin, Eric Gordon, Chris Paul, Kevin Love, Kobe Bryant, Stephen Curry, Rajon Rondo, Josh Smith, Manu Ginobili, Deron Williams, Pau Gasol, Al Horford, Andrew Bynum, John Wall, Monta Ellis, Kevin Martin, Serge Ibaka, Tim Duncan, Tyreke Evans, Amare Stoudamire, Kevin Garnett, LaMarcus Aldridge, Andrew Bogut, Danny Granger, Tony Parker and Joakim Noah (who is only projected to play 50 games per season). Now, I don't necessarily agree with all of them, but to say he's easily a top 10 player is just an outright fallacy.

Well this is shorting Carmelo quite a bit because he's at least Dirk and Durant's equal on defense. Rose is a better passer, but he's not a better rebounder and they are equal at shooting. Carmelo is quite easily a Top 10 player. No, it's really not shorting Carmelo at all. Carmelo is not better than Rose, Dirk, Durant, Gasol, Williams or Paul. He's sure as hell not better than James, Howard, Wade or Bryant. He's probably not better than Westbrook, Pierce, Rondo, Garnett, Amare, Nash or Love, either.

Of course, with D-Will in tow, the Nets could make a solid case for Dwight Howard when he enters FA.

In my opinion, these are the top 10 players in the NBA right now: LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, Derrick Rose, Dirk Nowitzki, Deron Williams and Pau Gasol. Not necessarily in that order, but around that order. After that, you've got guys like Westbrook, Garnett, Rondo, Pierce, Ginobili, Parker, Carmelo, Noah, Amare, Bosh, Horford, Aldridge, Love, Boozer and even Blake Griffin in some order.

We will be in the NIT. And lose in either the 1st or 2nd round. They're easily in the tournament if they beat Indiana and Iowa at home, and don't lose to a bad team in the Big Ten tournament.
