Another stat I think is hilarious: There are 65 position players in baseball with a current fWAR of 2 or more. The Cubs have seven of them (PCA, Tucker, Busch, Suzuki, Hoerner, Kelly, Swanson). The Brewers just got their first (Frelick).
Positive things about the Cubs offense:
As of this minute, live stats have 20 players in MLB with a wRC+ of 140 or more. Four of those players are on the Cubs (Busch, Tucker, Suzuki, PCA).
The Cubs' starters fWAR is 21st in baseball, lots of starting rotations are superior. Turns out having the best hitters, fielders, runners, and relievers also counts.
Nice to see the USMNT win a game they dominated for 70 minutes and nearly lost anyway due to 3 stupid mistakes.
They move on to face Guatemala, because Canada had an inexcusable red card just prior to half.
USMNT dominates an easy Gold Cup group, beating T&T, Saudi Arabia and Haiti to win their group and advance to the knockout round.
The bracket is set up so the US would next play whoever loses this Costa Rica-Mexico game, which is currently 0-0 in the second half and could result in a hilarious quarter if Mexico falls asleep a bit here...
Just saw that MLB posted updated All-Star vote totals, and the NL votes are suitably hilarious, with a Cub in the top 5 at every position: https://www.mlb.com/news/2025-mlb-all-star-ballot-first-update
Vaughn is a DH that hits like a pitcher. He's been in the minors since mid May because he was OPSing in the 500s, and has accumulated a total of -1.8 fWAR for his career.
That the White Sox thought he was a valuable piece for so long speaks more of the White Sox complete ineptitude.
I really think FIFA should revoke the US's hosting privileges, just hold it all in Canada and Mexico and ban the USMNT from the event. It's not safe for people from other countries to be here anyway, it's a perfectly reasonable position to have right now.
To keep 2016 in perspective, as of June 6 in 2016, the Cubs were 40-16 and had a 10 game lead in the division, and a 6 game lead on the entire league.
They weren't just the best team, they were the best team by far, and nobody else was close.
However, the Cubs will end the day tied for the fewest losses in MLB since the Tigers lost.
And if the Dodgers beat the Mets, the Cubs will have the best record in the NL alone.
I still have a soft spot for Pirates trades from when the Cubs fleeced them in 2003, acquiring Kenny Lofton and Aramis Ramirez for Bobby Hill and Matt Bruback.
