  1. Hoffman is the most fun closer to watch for me. Especially in the mid-90s when he did have the heat. He was the perfect closer.
  2. He's in your SoCal area, just North in Anaheim. I love Rodriguez. I think Wagner's more overpowering than both, simply because he throws with his left arm.
  3. http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/9273738/2 Top 50 NFL Free Agents. Names of interest for me. Chris Hope- S (PIT) Will Witherspoon- LB (CAR) Will Allen- CB (NYG) Antwaan Randle El- WR (PIT)
  4. Honestly, it really is. They could hqve 40-50 errors on the left side of their IF. Any time Billy Hall gets at 3B or SS is gonna make them even worse in the IF. Carlos Lee is maybe the league's worst LF. Brady Clark is below average.
  5. You make a good point about Greenberg and Theriot not fitting on the team. But I never once said I wanted Greenberg to start. He would be fine as just a pinch hitter and defensive replacement for Murton. He's not being rushed. He's old enough that he's not being wasted in a bench spot, since that is his likely long-term projection. His approach is good enough that he wouldn't suffer with sporadic playing time on the bench. As for Theriot, he's probably less of a fit because of all the 2B. But he's a solid 25th man. Last guy off the bench. Can play all IF positions. Can run. Lay down a late bunt. Put the ball in play. Again, he doesn't have a future as an ML starter. His best bet at an ML career is as a utility man. Mabry won't get on base. He won't hit for much more power. He's not as good defensively as either of these guys at any given position. Mabry is the 2006 version of Macias, without the speed and ability to "hit" both ways.
  6. I figured you would be, Jaxx. But seriously, look at what they did today. I know it wasn't Mariano Rivera, but their approaches at the plate are conducive to being able to come off the bench and hit. Both are patient and are tough to strikeout (which I only value from a bench player).
  7. Anyone else really hope these guys are on the team? I really like the way both of these guys play. These guys are the exact type of players that the Cubs should have on their bench. Both are great defensive players. Both will take a walk. Both can run. Both have an actual future. I'd much rather see a bench of: Perez, Hairston, Greenberg, Theriot, Blanco, and Restovich than the likely group of: Perez, Hairston, Blanco, Grissom, and Mabry with 12 pitchers.
  8. If Lugo signs an extension, would that push Upton to thirdbase? The outfield is already stocked with Crawford, Baldelli, Gomes, and Young on the way. More likely into the already crowded outfield. Tampa can use Huff, Burroughs and Ty Wiggington at 3b, but I think they will actually platoon Wiggington and Burroughs. Upton had 53 errors at SS last year, moving him to 3rd probably doesn't fix that problem all that much. Huff has been moved to 3B in spring training. Burroughs to the bench, Wigginton is gonna back up 1B and 3B.
  9. Where did you hear this? :( Various random media outlets. There was something last week in my fantasy league updates that "it is expected that once the Cubs are able to trade Todd Walker, they will go hard after Tony Graffanino". Nothing has been discussed in a while on either side apparently though (Walker or Graffanino deal).
  10. What I hear is that the Graffanino thing is just a matter of time. Walker is gonna be traded, and the Cubs will replace him with Graffanino.
  11. I agree; get to 17 wins and IMO they're a lock (17 wins almost always gets a team from a major conference in, and I see no reason to deny IU a bid if they reach 17). They have righted themselves since the slide (three wins in a row now, including one over a ranked team and one on the road). They actually lost by 8 points to both Duke and UConn, but that certainly wouldn't exclude them from the tournament. They will probably enter the Big Ten Tournament as the 6 or 7 seed....meaning that they will likely play Northwestern or Purdue again in the first round. Are you sure that a loss to Michigan, win against Northwestern/Purdue, and then loss to the #2 or #3 seed will get them there? Pretty sure. Enough quality wins and RPI to get in. Probably no higher than a 10 seed if that happens. But I think they win in Michigan, win 1st round game, and get a #7 seed.
  12. We actually have a bunch of guys who should be ready to do just that. Brad Eldred hit 40 HRs on three levels last year. Jose Bautista is about ready to come up. We have Duffy in center, a legit lead off man. And, Rajai Davis right behind him if he fails. We have three legtimate major league ready catchers. Hopefully, with all of the crap we're throwing against the wall, some of it will stick and next year we should have a competitive team. Eldred has holes in his swing IMO. I don't see him being a mainstay. I see him as an Adam Dunn type hitter with less power (not a knock, everyone has less power than Dunn) and without the ability to take a walk very well (that's a knock). Bautista and the catchers are very interesting too. I think Doumit can be a star offensive catcher. Duffy and Davis won't set the world on fire, but between the two they should find a solid leadoff option. I like Sanchez and Castillo too, though Sanchez should be playing more. I'm not a Jack Wilson fan.
  13. Ronny's gonna dominate this game. Zambrano will throw 2 hitless innings with a walk.
  14. Good deal. Got possibly the #1 SS in fantasy baseball, and anytime you can get the best player at his position, without giving up the same, you should do it. Upgraded at starter, and downgraded at 1B. Very good trade.
  15. Which D Young is that?
  16. I would kill to remember what bracketology means.....thanks mike d. http://www.spartantailgate.com/forums/images/smilies/rumor.gifLatest Bracketology has IU playing Wichita St. as a 10 seed. IMO, IU will need to win 3 out of their next 4 games to get into the dance. They should beat Purdue tonight...They will likely lose to Michigan. They then will need to win two conference tournament games. I don't see them getting into the tournament with anything less and I'm doubting that they play well enough to win 3 of 4 and none at Assembly Hall. But thanks TT..I did enjoy discussing the potential of them playing in the NCAA tournament. For a moment I felt like a kid peering into a candy store from the outside window. I think you're wrong. This puts them at 16 wins. A conf. tourney win puts them at 17. They will be a top 40 RPI team. 4-7 vs. RPI top 25. Quality losses by less than 5 each against the 2 #1 teams all season. .500 record in 2nd toughest conference.
  17. I think the answer Rocket's looking for is tomorrow. 3/2
  18. Hard to believe the Cubs won that many games big.
  19. Buck O'Neil has done more for the game of baseball in general than most people could ever even dream of. A true ambassador of the game.
  20. More of Maddux in April doesn't necessarily give you a better chance to win those games. I think it would be tough to start out the season with the 5 man fully intact. If you did, Zambrano would start April 3 (opening day) and then not again until April 11, with only 4 games between those dates. That is 7 off days. You spend the greater part of March getting guys used to 4 days rest. I wouldn't want Zambrano getting more than 5 days rest (pitch on the 9th) at that point in the season. Rest is great, but regular work is also necessary. You have to skip at least one guy early, to keep guys on reasonable schedules. I hate all these off days, they will be much more valuable in June, July or August. I think I'd go: Zambrano, off, Prior, off, Maddux, Williams, Zambrano, off, Prior, Maddux Williams, Rusch (unless Wood is healthy or Hill is miraculously called up), Zambrano, Prior, Maddux, Williams, Rusch (unless Wood is healthy or Hill is miraculously called up), off, Zambrano, Prior, Maddux. So, to start the season Zambrano would get 5, 5, 5 and 4 days rest between starts. Prior would get 5, 4, 5, 5 days. That sounds like the best plan. I hate the offdays, and I'd rather go with a 4 than a 5 man rotation. The pitchers need the rest later in the year more than they do in April.
  21. As I seem to do every year at this time. Here's my early MLB schedule. NL- Colorado @ SD Cincy @ LA St. Louis @ Arizona CUBS @ Milwaukee Philly @ Atlanta Washington @ Florida Pitt @ Houston NYM @ SF AL- Boston @ TB NYY @ Toronto CWS @ Minnesota Cleveland @ Anaheim KC @ Seattle Baltimore @ Texas Detroit @ Oakland SF and Oakland are the only non-warm or domed games. Switch which cities the teams go to in the 2nd series of the year. That at least gives the weather a week to get warm. Of course, I know there are traditions like Cincy has to start every season at home for some reason.
  22. Id substitute Pedro for Bay personally. Peavy and Pedro would win you the strikeout category barring injuries. I agree. And I love JBay. You could still possibly pick him up in the draft if needed. Drop anyone else, and they could be gone, depending on when you pick.
  23. Frankie.
  24. I know we've talked to Chad Jackson and S. Moss. It looks like we are looking for more speed. I also am getting the feeling that we aren't going to go after Randall El if the pricetag is too high. I'm happy about that. Honestly, I have no idea what we are going to do. The good thing is that at this point it doesn't matter as much what they do, unlike in past years. The Bears aren't completely without need at any position (except MAYBE D-line), and they aren't completely hopeless at any position (like they were at WR last offseason). Anyone they draft, if they pan out, will make an already solid team better. A good offseason would be to gain at least 1 FA starter and draft one player on each side of the ball, who can step in and play a factoring role.
