  1. Cintron hit .273 with 19 doubles, 8HR, and 48 RBI and hit .304 with a league-leading 3HR as a pinch hitter. His lifetime avg. is .279. He plays 3 positions, is 5 years younger, and he's much cheaper. Now tell me again that "he's not necessarily a better player than Neifi". Some people carry this "players who can catch the ball" thing too far. Cintron career OPS+ is 85 Perez career OPS+ is 65 ain't no amount of glovework making up for that. How often did Cintron get on base? What about in 04? Looks awfully Neifish (with more power) to me. Let's put it this way, is there anybody out there that doesn't make a Cintron for Perez trade if offered? I would make that deal in a second. I'd take it to save $2M. But that doesn't necessarily mean the Cubs are improved. Get a slightly better power bat off the bench, but get a worse player defensively and on the basepaths. The move helps them NONE in the important area of getting guys on base.
  2. Both are out if it were up to me. Michigan's done, without my say-so. FSU is probably one of the last teams in at best.
  3. Yeah, but it's no less exciting than what it was fifty or sixty years ago. I think baseball has done a poor job marketing itself, not only to black youth but all youth. I agree with your bottom line. But I think a lot had to do with the leagues. 60 years ago, the NBA was in its first year. 50 years ago, it was still a struggling league with very few stars and little fanfare. The NFL was more established, but the only way to become a player is to move up from being a college player. 50-60 years ago, there was still segregation, unequal schooling and little opportunity for a black kid to go to college and play football. While the MLB wasn't allowing blacks, there were still professional leagues that were much easier to get into. Baseball was being broadcasted and it was more noticeable compared to the otehr professional sports.
  4. IU would have to get ripped apart tomorrow to miss the tourney. Michigan should be worried if they don't come back and beat Minny. Michigan is in the NIT if they don't win in the next 60 seconds, might still be if they win. IU is in. Way too many quality wins.
  5. I see them getting a 6 seed if they win the conference tourney, but an 8-9 seed if they don't. I was clearly exaggerating.
  6. Syracuse is in. They had a shot if they'd lost to Cincy. Beating UConn is probably gonna get them a 6 seed.
  7. Ouch. GW's gonna lose in the first round. I think they are a 4-5 seed at best now. They are gonna face a pretty good team from the 12-13 slot. Syracuse pulled it out vs. UConn. At least for UConn, they won't have the burden of being the #1 team going into the tourney. The #1 team never wins.
  8. I think the biggest issue is that baseball isn't exciting enough. You only get to hit every 2-3 innings. You don't get much action in the field defensively, unless you play 1B. I love baseball, but any of my friends who don't like it say it's because it's too boring. If it's tough to watch on TV, it's gonna be tough to play for a kid.
  9. And McNamara does it again! Gets his team in OT with a huge 3! Why do people continue to let him shoot in the clutch?
  10. You have to take that in context. He was talking about the Rockies 9-ball league.
  11. The Cuse looking for another big win. Has led UConn from start to now. 7:00 in the 2nd. Cuse up 6.
  12. That's probably the most important thing right now. I think they will go after Randle El, then be done in free agency. I think they will fill out the rest of the team thru the draft. Every position but offensive line (expect Ogunleye and T. Jones), which doesn't really need to bring in a FA to start for the first time in a while, has been filled in the draft. I think the regime has confidence in their abilities to draft contributors to the team.

  14. I agree that part of Pierre's value is it means Dusty won't be able to bat some piece of trash in the leadoff spot. But it doesn't mean a thing when it comes to the 2 hole. Neifi will still get his shot there. It's a start though.
  15. I like Pierre. I think he's a good pickup simply for the fact that Dusty will have someone he can put atop the order 160 times this year. No more Patterson, Perez, Enrique Wilson 1-2's. And I think it's important to remember that Pierre's in a contract year. For all the talk about how bad he was last year (and he was bad), I don't see him putting up a .324 OBP again. He doesn't have much of a history of hitting in the .260s. I think we'll see a .290/.350 type year from him. Which should be good enough. I'm afraid for him to ever steal a base, though. I'm gonna be upset the first time he gets caught with Derrek Lee coming to the plate.
  16. Yeah. Francis got progressively worse offensively as he went thru school. As a freshman, he looked like he would be a guy that would be in college for 3 years at best and become a lottery pick. He had size, strength, and athletic ability. Definitely a waste.
  17. That's my scouting report. When I saw him at Lansing that was the most impressive thing about him. He never made the same mistake twice. If he couldn't figure out a pitcher soon enough, he would lay down a bunt.
  18. McNamara with another HUGE shot.
  19. Good one to open the Big East tourney. Cincy making a comeback vs. the Cuse. Both should be in, but the winner gets the important 20th win.
  20. Keep Hernandez. He will surpass those ABs with the ability to DH in the AL. He will most likely be more productive in a more hitter friendly home park (and division). Hernandez will be the primary catcher, with Lopez spelling him on occassions. I would guess Hernandez would catch about 100-110 games and DH another 30-40.
  21. Cintron is 5 years younger than Perez, cheaper, and just 2 years removed from actually being a productive ballplayer. Cintron is a much better option in terms of cost, but he's not necessarily a better player. Neifi's defensive advantage is greater than the offensive advantage Cintron has.
  22. hell no!
  23. Madison is gonna be 32 1/2 before the season starts. He wasn't particularly good last year (at least not pro-bowl caliber like he has been in the past). He's on the downside of his career.
  24. I need a distraction, so why not? I'm going for the "storyline that everyone will not shut up about if it happens" pick. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44/cubsfan_05/b10tourney.jpg Hope that happens. 20-10, Big Ten tourney championship, that would give IU a #5 seed at worse. I actually think IU matches up very well against OSU, if it gets that far. I'd rather face them than Iowa or Illinois. IU/UW could go either way. Depending on which 2 teams show up it could be a blowout in either's favor or be a nailbiter.
  25. FIRST TEAM Dee Brown, Illinois Greg Brunner, Iowa Terence Dials, Ohio State Daniel Horton, Michigan ALANDO TUCKER, Wisconsin SECOND TEAM Maurice Ager, Michigan State James Augustine, Illinois SHANNON BROWN, Michigan St. Paul Davis, Michigan State Marco Killingsworth, Indiana THIRD TEAM JAMAR BUTLER, Ohio State GEARY CLAXTON, Penn State Je’Kel Foster, Ohio State Jeff Horner, Iowa Vedran Vukusic, Northwestern Media. This is a better list. Can't justify Killer and Ager on the 3rd team.
