  1. Well, then you don't sign him. I doubt the out-clause was the difference between Aramis being a Cub or not. The Cubs were not against a wall yet, they still had Aramis for another season when they made the deal. They could have traded him last season at the deadline had he not had shown any willingness to sign by then. With the out option, Ramirez holds all the cards. Whenever you give a player (really his agent) all the cards, you are risking that the player really likes his situation and wants to stay. And usually you lose.
  2. ??? Grossman, Bradley, Berrian, Mike Brown, Benson, and Thomas Jones were all injured last year. The Bears had some signifigant injuries last year. I meant on Defense. Mike Brown is the only defensive player that you mentioned, and he didnt get injured until around Week 14. When the Bears made their 8 game winning run, the defense was almost completely healthy. I just can't see a unit remain as healthy as they did last year Tank, Scott, Hillenbrand, Harris, Azumah and others also missed at least an entire game last year. Nothing major really, but it's not like they were immune. Plus, the Bears roster is comprised of a bunch of guys who have managed to remain healthy in their careers. Briggs, Vasher, A Brown, Hillenmeyer, and Harris have missed very little time in their careers. Urlacher, Tillman, and Ogunleye have only had 1 season in which they missed any time. Knocks on Wood (not Kerry).
  3. I don't think he would be a Type A, thus, wouldn't get the Cubs high draft picks. And like it or not, the Cubs aren't getting very good propsects for him. My guess he gets traded after the deadline for 2 minor leaguers with high upside, but very little successful results......the Cubs m.o.
  4. If true, the Orioles would be insane not to take that offer. Absolutely insane. Where do the Angels play Tejada, though? Would he agree to play 3B?
  5. Yeah, I thought he really might sit out. I think the Saints use him as the Dolphins did with Ronnie Brown last year. He'll get 10-15 carries a game easily, a few touches on swing passes, and Deuce will get the same. Won't score many TDs, unless he breaks a big one, as Deuce will get the goaline carries. Next year, though, he will be an absolute star.
  6. BTW, if Aramis walks after this season for nothing or is forced to be traded because of the threat of doing so, Jim Hendry should be immediately fired. The out clause in the contract was a stupid idea, and it could come back to bite the Cubs in their stupid behinds.
  7. If they offered Santana and Aybar for Tejada, the proposal better be at least similar. Ramirez (if he doesn't opt out) has a better contract than Tejada, is younger and other than this year, has been the better player than Tejada. Position scarcity aside, which really it should be because the Angels have Cabrera, Wood, and Aybar at SS.
  8. He strained his right forearm, no TJS. He's expected back in late August, but probably will be back for the AFL. I'd want him and Kottaras for Aramis...and I'd still prefer trading him to the Angels' system. I hate the thought of trading one of the Cubs 3 above average position players for minor leaguers, no matter how good they are. The Cubs would be counting on Lee coming off an injury, Barrett coming off a career year, and Jim Hendry to fill the OF and rest of the IF with capable bats. I don't like that thought at all. At the very least, if the Cubs trade Aramis, they need to get a guy who has or will likely contribute to the majors next year and be above average at his position.
  9. If the defense stays healthy, no reason the Bears can't mirror the 2005 season. Heck, they will actually be better on D if there are no major injuries. And as I have said all offseason, the Bears WRs are not that bad of a group. I don't think Moose is a #1 guy anymore, but Berrian was great the last 6 weeks of the season and will only get better. Bradley was great before he got hurt and will get better. In Bradley, Berrian, and Moose, the Bears may not have a legit #1 WR, but they could easily have three #2s. That's a solid receiving corps for a lot of teams.
  10. I don't disagree at all, but what other arms were there in Houston besides Oswalt? All I can think of is Elarton. Wade Miller. Dotel and Wagner were pretty young in his tenure.
  11. Also, we haven't seen the Cubs players traded, because there are big names still on the block that haven't gone. Teams don't salivate of Walker, Maddux, Pierre, or Jones when names like Abreu, Soriano, Tejada, Schmidt, etc have been rumored. Any of the first 3 could go in a waiver deal. Jones isn't going anywhere if he doesn't go by tomorrow.
  12. Delhomme was a steal this late. 5th round, with 3 keepers. Basically like him being an 8th rounder. He was what, the 3rd best QB last year?
  13. While I agree that short relief pitching is very inconsistent and vary from year to year (just from the Cubs in recent years, Hawkins, Van Poppel, Borowski), Eyre has strung together 2 consecutive (and 3 of 4) very good seasons. Howry has been a pretty good reliever his entire career, with the exception of 01-02 when he was hurt the majority of the time. The problem is Howry will be 33 next week, and it's hard to predict he will stay healthy and productive for the next 2 years of his contract. Eyre is 34 and will likely decline from what he has been the last 2 seasons (the best years of his career). And for the record, Ohman has been doing what Eyre is doing for most of this season anyway. Since May 1, Will Ohman has a 2.04 ERA, with 38 Ks and 23 hits allowed in 35 1/3 innings. Wuertz dominated in Iowa and has continued to do so since his return to the majors. Granted, their pitching more middle relief than setup, but both shined last year in the very roles Eyre and Howry have come in to take over. To me, if you can get a deal anything remotely close to what Washington got for their relievers, you trade Eyre and/or Howry in a heartbeat.
  14. I think this is the first deal in which I would trade Z. Again, this is extremely hypothetical. But I'm not trading Z for just anybody. If I'm trading Zambrano, I have to get an arm back for him. Despite that being the best combo of 3 offensive prospects in the league, I still wouldn't do it for Zambrano.
  15. This race may be better than all the pennant races. Papelbon, Liriano, Verlander. Papelbon is completely dominating the league, and is easily baseball's best closer. Leads the league in saves, save %, and he's the toughest pitcher in baseball to hit. BUT he is still a closer. Liriano is the AL ERA and WHIP leader. He'll finish 2nd in the league in strikeouts to his older, cloned teammate. And he's on pace for 19 wins despite pitching the first month and a half out of the bullpen. Verlander is 2nd in the AL in ERA, and led for a chunk of the season before Liriano qualified. He will finish with more IP than Liriano. He's top 10 in WHIP, BAA, and 15th in IP despite being handled pretty carefully. While not being as dominant as the other two, you can't overlook the fact that Verlander has been the ace (a full run in ERA better than anyone else on his team) on the team that is a whopping 8 games better than any other team in the league. And this doesn't include Jered Weaver, who if he continues at the pace he's at for the rest of the year, will throw himself in the race. Any of the first 3 could win the Cy Young, in competition with Johan Santana and John Lackey, making that another great race. AL MVP will be interesting with Manny (OPS leader), Ortiz (HR/RBI leader), Mauer (batting leader), and Hafner (along with Manny is top 5 in nearly every category). In the NL it's Pujols MVP, Webb Cy Young (though Carpenter is closing), and an Uggla/Fielder battle for ROY.
  16. I think the Devil Rays seriously want to keep Lugo. I actually think they will. Upton will come up and play 3B. They have the makings of a great lineup. What they do for pitching now is beyond me. Unless they trade one of their OFs or Cantu.
  17. If Cruz is going to Texas, they win this trade big time. Cruz in Texas could put up numbers like GMJr is doing this year. He's an underrated offensive talent. Nix is not a good player. Mench at his best will be a Carlos Lee clone without the batting average. Cordero is aging and mediocre now.
  18. Not that Hendry can do no wrong. But it doesn't make very much sense for journalists to try to scout out the rumor mill in the Cubs organization. You are gonna hear more rumors about the teams in the playoff hunt, because they are more interesting. Plus, it's pretty easy to speculate what a team in the hunt needs and form a rumor that way. Detroit could use Abreu to get them to the Series. Houston could use Tejada to get them to the playoffs. If the Cubs get either, or both for that matter, they aren't going anywhere this year. Frankly, it's not as fun or interesting to talk about next year for the national media.
  19. Dawgs and Buddiga in another high-scoring epic. Less than 1/2 a point seperates the 2 teams.
  20. TANK FOR UPTON! But yeah, that loss sucked. Julio's getting dropped as soon as I can find someone to take his roster spot. With all the talent on the top teams this year, and the non-contenders trading away veteran talent....next year's draft should be loaded. Teams like HBC, GHS, and NSBB have a lot of non-exempt players that they can't possibly keep in addition to their exempts. Quakers and my team have over 10 players that are certainly keeper worthy that may not add up to be over the cap limit. League could be turned upside down next year. BTW, anyone want DLowe? He's real cheap? Anyone but Crawford, Sizemore, and Santana could be had on my team.
  21. I don't even remember how the waiver process works.
  22. Burrell is too pretty and his worst year was the one right after he signed his big deal. I don't like the "they lost with him, they can lose without him" argument. I guess I should say I understand it, I just don't agree it's a good plan. They do have young cornerstone position players to fall back on when Abreu leaves though. I know what you're saying. Not really using that argument, per se. Just meant to use the "they aren't winning with him and by the time they will likely win he won't be around" argument. Or is it the "Ol Switcheroo"? Or is it the "what's good for the goose is what's good for the gander"?
  23. I don't get the motivation for the dump, although I have been sort of predicting something like this for about 2 years. The ridiculous thing would be if the Cubs don't get involved. Abreu is exactly what they need, and while they will have money to improve, they won't have the players to spend it on. I understand dumping Abreu. They do have Victorino who needs PT and is ready. Abreu isn't part of their future. They are a sub .500 team w/Abreu, they can be sub .500 w/o him and spend the money elsewhere. I understand the motivation to move him....don't understand on Burrell other than the fact they just don't like him there. Don't know why, though.
  24. I don't understand what makes this deal ridiculous. It's a salary dump. You get crappy players in return if your main agenda is to get rid of a contract. This is not unprecedented. Remember the Aramis Ramirez trade?
  25. Lopez is worse than Rusch. I'd do Rusch or Williams and I'd even give up a guy like Hill or Guzman for either Abreu or Burrell.
