  1. Sosa and a team full of Derniers in 1998.
  2. If Tejada can, ARod can. Tejada can't either. For the record, I don't believe for a minute that Arod can still play SS. For all the talk about him being the best SS on the Yankees, I don't think his defense would be as good as Jeter's the last 3 years. My wanting Arod to play SS for the Cubs, was based on the fact, that I don't really care if he can play it or not.
  3. A great Rf (or OF in general regardless of position) is easier to come by than a great SS, though. There's really no reason a team with a $100M payroll should end up with Burnitz/ Jones/ Hollandsworth, etc in their OF. And the RF numbers, weren't horrible. But they were middle of the pack, and boosted by players like Ward and Pagan having astronomical numbers in RF. Even Floyd was better in RF than he was in all other situations by a long shot (LF, PH, DH).
  4. Hendry get stuck going after a less than spectacular player, despite having money to send? Say it ain't so! Burnitz, Jones, Kendall.
  5. Agreed. Crawford would add a lot to this team offensively and defensively, but for Rich Hill and what may be the top offensive prospect (albeit in a weak system) I would like someone that is an .850 OPS guy with a little more power than CC can provide. I'd see if they would accept Marshall and a couple of better prospects, though.
  6. Eric Gordon is a beast. Seriously, who makes 7 of 11 three-pointers (most of which were at least 5 feet behind the line) and leaves you wondering how those 4 came out of the rim. That was an ugly game defensively. Bassett gets abused by quick PGs. None of the newcomers are good defensively outside of Gordon, and DJ could stand to be a lot better in doubling down and stopping the ball from getting into the post. Lost in the shuffle will be Gordon's defense (not to IU fans), his 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Bassett with a quiet 20, if that's possible. DJ with 17. Ellis only had 5 points, but led the team with 9 boards and 6 assists. Big Dre with 11 and he helped change the tide of the game.
  7. Yeah, Pembroke is a real good looking offensive team. I did take some good from the defense though. Thru the first 14 minutes of the 1st half, Pembroke had just 12 shot attempts, and I think 2 FTs so it wasn't like we were fouling them. Of course, they were 9 for 12 in those shots, and only a couple were contested. However, there were spurts of great defensive pressure. At one point they had 20 points off turnovers in the 1st half, thanks to about 9 steals. In the 2nd half, they pulled away thanks to blocked shots. Eric Gordon and White are good defenders on the ball. On the ball D should even get better as Holman, Crawford, and Ellis all have long arms and the quickness to keep up with anybody. Help defense is horrible right now. But this is why they have a non-conference schedule. I'd hate to see them against an experienced Michigan St. offense right now.
  8. Wouldn't need defense if he struck more people out. Granted, that's oversimplifying, but it's the difference between a league average at best pitcher vs. a top 10 pitcher in the league.
  9. Yeah, I don't know where the Silva love is coming from. He has a career batting average against of .299, which if you take out his 170 relief innings, would be around the .305-.310 mark. His strikeout rate is atrocious as he's never struck out even 4 men per 9 as a starter. That would be a bad K rate even if he was an extreme groundball pitcher, which he is not. He's more of a flyball pitcher. He's given up about 28 HRs a year as a starter. The only good things about Silva are that he eats innings and that batters almost have to sell their soul to get a walk off of him. Of course, why walk when there's a 3/10 chance you get a hit? He's in the top quarter in GB rates. He's a pretty good groundball pitcher. Not good enough to overlook that atrocious K rate.
  10. I put Rose at the top, then Mayo and then Beasley, but that's probably because I've always been a guard guy. Beasley is sort of the same deal as Mayo, as far as having incredible talent, but sometimes a lack of drive. He should be the top freshman in the Big XII and I wouldn't be shocked to see him make second team all-conference. I like Beasley, Mayo, Rose, then Gordon based on pure talent. I honestly think Gordon will be the best player this year and at the next level, based on what I have heard about his work ethic and basketball knowledge. Also, you shouldn't be shocked if Beasley is 2nd team all Big XII. It would probably be a big disappointment if he's NOT. He has as good a shot as any (except for Rush and Augustin) to be the 1st team. I like Gordon's game a lot, but no way does he have a shot to be the best pro. He is a 6'2" SG. He is too undersized imo to be a better pro than Rose or Mayo. I really think there are 4 point guards in all of basketball better than Rose right now. Nash, Kidd, D Williams, and Chris Paul. Except for Gordon is 6'4" and can handle the ball and pass well enough to play point if he needed to, although the 2 would be his best spot. He could be a Mitch Richmond type at the next level. He has a similar type of build.

  12. I don't think Kansas or UNC will have many if any frosh playing serious minutes. I would also expect both to be around a lot longer than Gordon, Mayo, or Rose come tourny time. Kevin Love is the real key frosh. They I think all the teams mentioned will be Elite 8 teams, probably along with G'town. But I will go out on a limb now and say neither Kansas or UNC will make the final 4.
  13. I think Mayo will be a better pro player than in college. I will admit though, I haven't seen that much of Rose. This will be a fun year for college basketball. Usually teams go deep in the tourney because of experience. This year, freshmen will make or break most of the top teams in the country.
  14. Anybody ever look at bowl projection stuff. http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content.asp?SID=1144&CID=735896 Found a lot of potential matchups very interesting. IU vs. Miami(OH) in the Motor City- The Late Coach Hep Bowl Texas vs. USC in the Holiday- national title game for 2 years ago Houston vs. UK- offense and more offense Florida State vs. So Carolina- Bowden vs. Spurrier Penn ST. vs. Florida- 2 closely ranked teams.....talent level (read: speed) not in the same ballpark Michigan vs. Oregon in the Rose- would anybody really want to see this again?
  15. Cabrera is under control for 2 years. If it turns out the new owner can't afford to extend him he can be traded for a nice return next offseason. If we get Santana and the new owner can't afford an extension then he'll walk and all we get is a draft pick. I'll take Cabrera. I didn't think this thread was about Cabrera or Cabrera vs. Santana.
  16. If trading Pie gives you a better player (than trading Jones would) who would be under Cubs control for another few years, then I would rather go for said player and keeps Jones around in CF for a year.
  17. I'd trade that package (Hill, Cedeno, Pie, Gallagher) for 1 year of Santana and the compensation when he walks. He would make the Cubs so much better, it's ridiculous.
  18. The key to being a tourney team if you aren't a clear top 10-15 team is to be good enough to defend your home court. Illinois will be a tourney team, and I expect them to finish 4th and probably not lose more than 1 conference game at home. And I will give you guys props, you will beat IU in Champaign. If IU could forfeit and not show to the game, that would probably work out best for the team and Mr. Gordon. I'd actually hate to see what would happen to him if IU won there and he had a good game.
  19. That's my thing. Granted, they won the world series with that same team, but since the 2nd half of 2006, they've won like 45% of their games with that same team, which is clearly aging. Not all of those players are bad players, but together they make up a team that can't compete with the Indians, Tigers, or Twins.

  21. They better get somebody on the South Side. They have just resigned the entire team that has been one of the worst in the AL for the past year and a half.
  22. Lidge will have fun closing 1-run games in that park. Still like the deal for the Phils. Now, if I draft Brett Myers in my fantasy league it won't be a complete waste.
  23. Me either. I've always had a bad hunch about him. And you usually don't see 3 major leaguers traded for a single prospect.
  24. My guess would be yes and no. Hendry will go outside of the organization for a reliever, but not a closer. He will sign a FA lefty for the pen, my guess is JC Romero.
  25. Just to change the subject..... USC is gonna be a real good team this year. The PAC10 is amazing this year, and OJ Mayo is the truth. I think USC can be a final 4 team.
