  1. I mentioned this way, way back in the other Roberts thread, but I have a real problem with this idea that DeRosa would somehow get that many at bats with this potential line up. Let's just say the Cubs get Fukudome and Roberts. Fukudome, Soriano, Roberts, Lee and Ramirez basically all play the most ideal positions that DeRosa would supposedly sub. Which of those guys do they realistically expect to give a day off each week to start DeRosa? Some of these guys are 8 figure salary per year guys. There are days off scheduled all season long. And if DeRosa is sitting on the bench everyday because none of these guys are coming out of the line up while Theriot is starting everyday at SS, I'm gonna be pissed off. Ramirez and Soriano each spent time on the DL last year. Lee spent time day-to-day with nagging injuries and was suspended for 5 games. Roberts has had a significant injury history. Also gotta figure Derosa will start vs. all LHPs, either in RF w/ Fukudome moving to CF, with Pie on the bench in the above scenario or at 2B for the LH hitting Roberts.
  2. How are the Cubs going to afford Fukudome and Santana, or are you just going to let Santana walk after 2008? I wouldn't be opposed to letting Santana walk. 1 year of him and draft picks is a pretty decent haul for what he provides on the mound. Of course, if I was the GM, I'd re-sign him and look to trade Derrek Lee and Soriano long before I'd want to get rid of Santana.
  3. Yeah, but the Dodgers wouldn't. If they did, I'd then try to trade Kemp, Hu/Furcal, and young pitching (not even sure who would be of interest to Minnesota) for Santana. I'd keep Ethier for RF, Fukudome for CF.
  4. Ouch. An extension for Pudge? Wouldn't be worth taking on Willis. And they have no prospects worthwhile anymore that could be added to make it worth it for anyone.
  5. He's a reliever. Hard to be a top prospect as a reliever, without dominant closer stuff, ala Marmol. If the Cubs selected him I'd guess one of 2 things are happening. A. They are trading either him or more likely another reliever in the near future. B. They are trading something to the Twins before the end of spring training in order to be able to put Lahey in AAA until they need him.
  6. Didn't realize that. That's a very good point. I also like the idea of either moving Soriano down in the lineup (which initially seems like the plan) or having a set #2 hitter. Since they aren't willing to leave Derosa there, Roberts is about as good as the Cubs can conceivably get.
  7. If Hendry likes Roberts as much as he liked Pierre, this deal will be Marshall, Gallagher AND Veal for Roberts.
  8. It worked for Neifi, Blanco, Jock, Burnitz, Alou, and Maddux.
  9. Link: http://www.metsblog.com/2007/11/03/blog-scouting-report-on-kosuke-fukudome/ I love Fukudome's potential, but I'd be worried about giving $13 million to a player with those numbers. Gotta pay for that OBP though (ironically) Why wouldn't pay $13M for those numbers? Even on the low end of 20HRs, that's likely a mid 8's OPS. On the high end, he's probably a better offensive player than Derrek Lee.
  10. Exactly. Bradley doesn't really have the pull to hold out to be a starter for a big time contract. He's insurance for Pie and Fukudome, plays CF vs. LHPs. Plays LF if Soriano has another leg injury. He should be cheap enough that the Cubs can pay him and Fukudome.
  11. Sign Fukudome for CF, trade Murton and Fox for Teahen, trade Pie and others for Bedard, and then call it an offseason. :D Could Teahen play RF everyday? If DeRosa is at second, who plays right against a lefty? He played RF everyday last year.
  12. He'll be a 1B permanently in the not to distant future.
  13. Soriano's contract is fine til 2010. Marquis' contract will never look sane.
  14. This dude better be really good if the Cubs spend double digit millions on him.
  15. Signing any reliever to a long term deal is Riske.
  16. Magglio isn't gonna come close to repeating his 07 numbers. Sheffield will be injury prone as usual. Pudge will continue to age rapidly. Jones will struggle in Comerica Park. Renteria doesn't hit in the AL. Polanco will hit nowhere near what he did last year. Guillen will continue to age and decline. Granderson will decline. Actually, I think about 4-5 of those things have a decent chance of happening. Guillen had a .747 post ASB OPS, Sheff and Pudge were in the .600s. Those 3 plus Maggs, Renteria, Jones and Polanco will all be at least 33 by the end of the 2008 season. Is this Tigers lineup that much better than what the Yankees threw out there last year? What about the 07 Mets? Granted the Tigers will have better pitching than either of those teams, but if the Red Sox get Santana, and possibly if they don't, they are at best the 2nd best AL team. Heck the Yankees may be better next year if they get Santana. The Indians may be better if Hafner comes back to form and they get a 3rd starter.
  17. who do you plan on replacing it with? because hendry seems dead set on it not being matt murton. Jones' 2nd half and 2006 lead most people to believe that the first half of his 2007 season was a bit of an aberration. And trading a possible asset for nothing and hoping someone who may not even be available is, is how teams end up with Jeromy Burnitz as their RF.
  18. I don't understand why a team trading a cheap young starter, who has no other cheap young starters, would make a trade and get no young cheap starters.
  19. 2007 Cubs: vs. RHP: .274/.335/.419 = .754 OPS vs. LHP: .263/.325/.431 = .756 OPS If they had problems with left-handers then you can just as easily say they had problems with right-handers, as well. Thank you!!!!! The Cubs also had almost 3000 more ABs vs. RHPs. Getting better against lefties is NOT important.
  20. FWIW, the 2nd half of 2006 for Teahan was awesome. He was probably a top 5 player in the AL after the 06 break. A full year of that is probably not likely, but he showed flashes of being a legit .850+ OPS hitter.
  21. I disagree. Willis has a perceived value that would likely net them some young talent. I think they could get more by dealing them separately. Agreed. He's a lefty that has had success and has the ever important playoff experience. I think a lot of people around baseball think he was a victim of his surroundings being one of the few members left from the championship team. He lost a lot of his closest friends and blah, blah, blah. There's still some value there, especially considering what else is on the market.
  22. This deal won't happen. But usually I say don't throw all your eggs into 1 basket (i.e. don't trade Cabrera and Willis in the same deal to the same team), but Maybin and Miller makes it worth it. I can't see the Tigers trading both. I'd imagine Maybin would interest the Marlins more than Miller..
  23. Yeah, if those trades are on the table you have to take them. Soriano, Hamilton, Fukudome is a great OF. McCloth becomes a solid 4th OF. Pie can be traded for pitching help, though I'd still like to keep Hill.
