  1. I agree with the sentiment (don't pay him big money, stand firm and let someone else pay him). But Manning really put it all together last year though. Pro Football Focus has some stuff up, and he was one of the best safeties in football last year. He's one of the best tackling DBs in the league and he allowed the lowest completion % against of all NFL safeties last year, with 0 TDs allowed. He played very well last year. The problem, he wants a lot of money. He's a speed guy that is already 28 years old, so he will undoubtedly lose a couple steps in his next contract. I hate to lose him, but I'd also hate to be paying a 32 year old safety, that has never been a turnover machine, like he's one of the league's best.
  2. It's typical. There's a whole "veteran disrespect" stigma in the MLB (and most sports frankly). And calling out a veteran is showing him up, while calling out a young guy is trying to help the guy play the game the right way or some BS.
  3. The crappy thing about that is that Tampa has one of the most attractive targets in Davin Joseph and can afford to pay him like the highest paid OG in the league. Seattle also has more money than the Bears and ironically enough have all the exact same needs as the Bears. Need an OG. Need a WR. Could use a DT and a CB. Of course, Green Bay won't be retaining any of their free agents with so little cap, so that's good.
  4. Most people would rank center about even with left guard in terms of importance. They make some line calls, but what is most important is a lineman's ability to block, and you need it most at LT, RT and RG. You don't want your best lineman to be the center, unless maybe he's an all-time great at the position (which Kreutz is not). Kreutz was pretty good in his day. And I saw an article on Pro Football Focus that had him as one of the top pass blocking centers in the league. But yeah, C is probably the least important position. Most of their blocks are double-teams. Snapping the football and making line calls aren't as difficult as people make them out to be. And line calls can be made by a guard or tackle as well. I agree with the sentiment. The Bears probably are going to re-sign Kreutz out of necessity. My issue is that he's only worth a 1-year deal, but will probably not come back for that. It's going to take 2 easy, and probably a 3-year deal to keep him. But I'd be very willing to cut him after the 2011 season and go in a different direction with one of the 3-4 four-year college starters coming into the draft next year.
  5. Like you said Looper and Wellemeyer were not going to be options. Best case scenario is they go to AAA and be mediocre and be just as bad of options as Coleman has been. That left just Silva. Silva was a high priced veteran player, getting passed over by a kid with no ML starting experience. It could have been foreseen that he would have an issue with not getting a starting spot. The bottom line is Hendry traded away an effective, cheap starter in Gorzellany for basically nothing. Gorzo would have been the perfect 6th starter. He did it part of last year. He was cheap and wouldn't throw a hissyfit over it.
  6. PNC is pretty awesome. If the Pirates stay in the race, people will pack that park every night. Pittsburgh fans are pretty die-hard, and have been looking for a reason to go to PNC since the luster wore off. Definitely #2 of the parks I've been too. I like the way Baltimore, Kansas City, and Seattle look on TV, of the places I've never been to.
  7. Pena is a nice "bird-in-the-hand" in case Pujols or Fielder don't work out. And Pena won't be so sought after that the Cubs have to rush to a decision with him. And they should know pretty early on if they have a chance with one of the other 2. I'd gladly take Pena back for another year.
  8. I didn't really watch much of the games this weekend (only part of Saturday's game), but I'm not a fan of Soup Campbell at all. I haven't liked him from other times I've heard him broadcast, non-Cubs games.
  9. Red Sox actually have some pretty interesting prospects. Anthony Rizzo is a power hitting 1B. Josh Reddick is an OF prospect that can play CF and has some decent power potential. Casey Kelly and Anthony Ranuado are interesting pitchers too. Still, I don't know that I'd trade Garza for all 4. I would see if they are interested in Dempster for one of those hitters and a couple pitchers not in their top 10.
  10. Literally the only thing Koyie Hill does better than Soto is block the plate. If he was in there yesterday in the 8th, the Cubs win the game yesterday.
  11. Like him or hate him, that's pretty cool. Amazing day for him today. 5 for 5. His 3000th hit (HR) tied the game at 1. He scored another run to tie the game at 3. Then picked up the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the 8th to turn it over to Rivera. Couldn't have written a better script unless Posada scored the winning run and Pettitte got the win.
  12. I'm actually happy for the Pirates. Marmol had nothing tonight.
  13. Does Marmol even have a fastball anymore?
  14. Tennessee in a rain delay. McNutt's day may be done.
  15. What do you guys think? Would you root for this team? Would it work? I don't know how the sharing arena thing would work, but I wouldn't root for that team. And even with Jordan, it would take a lot to get the city of Chicago to root for them. But it seems like it would work for the Bobcats financially.
  16. Pirates are a poor man's version of the San Francisco Giants (literally). Plus, been extremely lucky. Hitting 50 OPS points higher with runners in scoring position. The NL average is only 16 points higher with RISP.
  17. Technically, Nick Struck threw a no-hitter last year (5 inning rain shortened game) Also, James Russell, Chris Siegfried, Matt Maradeo, and Jose Ceda combined to throw one in 2007. Sean Gallagher was in on a combined no-hitter in 2005. But yeah, this is the first 9-inning complete game from a Chiefs pitcher since 88.
  18. By my count he threw about 104 pitches.
  19. 90 pitch count? Organization has a 100-pitch count in the minors.
  20. Kirk has struck out the last 5 he's faced. He's struck out the last 6 who have tried to get a hit (1st out in 6th on a sac bunt after a leadoff walk).
  21. Gotta be nearing his pitch limit right? He has 9 ks.
