  1. Because these things hardly ever work out. Okoye was not the norm last year, and even he was never as injured/bad as Price has the last 2 years. That being said, this doesn't have to be a monumental move for it to be worthwhile. The Bears were looking at a situation where one of Ronnie Cameron, Nate Collins, John McCargo, Jordan Miller, or Demario Pressley was going to be getting legitimate playing time as the 4th DT in the rotation. Brian Price put up 24 tackles and 3 sacks last year. Those 5 in their careers have put up 64 tackles and 3 sacks, with 25 of those tackles and 2.5 of those sacks coming from McCargo way back before 2007. The Bears were going to make a move for a DT at some point. Whether a camp cut or trade. Getting a recent top 40 pick for a 7th rounder was probably as good as can be expected. Not that I'm super confident that Price will all of a sudden live up to his pre-draft hype, but the chance he does is worth giving him a shot over those never-will-be's he's competing with.
  2. My Steelers fan friends say Spaeth was a blocking tight end that doesn't block well. Not sure if true, but I see him as odd man out. I swear I made this exact post when the Bears signed him. LOL. He actually blocked OK last year I thought. Much better than Steelers fans led me to believe he would.
  3. I think he's going to have a legitimate role at some point this year... http://www.csnchicago.com/sportsnetChicago/search/v/57167268/bowen-s-breakdown-how-to-utilize-evan-rodriguez.htm Also, Bowen agreed that he looked good yesterday. I'm interested to see what they do at TE. Kellen Davis was re-signed, Rodriguez is obviously going to be on the roster. Then there's Spaeth and Kyle Adams. This "new" offense should allow Adams to shine, and the Bears really liked him last year. Speath is the best blocker of the group. So, it'll be real interesting who wins the 3rd TE spot and if they possibly carry 4, which I don't know why they would take 4....but they did last year, and they should only need 3 RBs this year, with Bush, Bell and Forte all proven capable.
  4. Apparently several Bucs failed Schiano's conditioning test. It's gotta be hard as hell to sprint the football field (plus 1 endzone) 16 times in a row. We ran sprints with no interruption like that when I played, but we did it 10 times at most and most everybody was significantly slower by the 2nd half of those.
  5. Pretty sad. Started at IU as a Freshman the same year as me. Always hits home when someone your age dies from something like this. Oddly enough, he was probably the only Hoosier basketball player from 94-98 that I never had a class with or talked to before. I ran into him on campus maybe once or twice, but that was it.
  6. My reasoning for Garza's value possibly increasing in the offseason is that, right now the market for Garza is ONLY contenders. Granted, the list of contenders is the longest it's been in the history of baseball....but in the offseason, the market is any team that hopes to contend. Garza could be a good acquisition for a team like the Pirates, Royals, DBacks, etc....a team that doesn't have the financial ability or the lure to get a big time FA to come to their cities. I may be wrong, but I don't think there have been a lot of examples of teams paying substantially more at the deadline than they would the next offseason. Could the As and Padres really have gotten more for Gio, Cahill and Latos last July than they did this winter?
  7. I don't think he's very high on Garza (and keeping him around at what it will likely cost). Which makes the question even better, since Garza is a good baseball player. He's not as good as some people on this board make him out to be. And given that the Cubs haven't talked about an extension with him in months, they probably don't think too highly of him either. His trade value will likely decline going forward, so I can't see this being a positive unless the Cubs are able to sign him to a really good extension (which they've apparently shown no interest in doing). I don't think anyone on this board has made him out to be more than he is. People have specifically mentioned NOT giving him a Matt Cain contract because he's not as good as Matt Cain. But he is young enough to be still be good enough to be a key part of the rotation when the Cubs are good enough to compete.
  8. I think an offseason trade of Garza might be better anyway. Good alternative for teams that lose out on other FA SPs. Also, gives him a chance to have a good 2nd half to boost his value a little. Or frankly, teams will be more willing to take a chance that they get 2011 Garza instead of 2012 Garza and have complete control if they want to sign him long-term or not.
  9. But keeping Garza is good. Not in the long run. Weren't you the "why are we afraid of good baseball players?" guy this offseason? I don't think he's very high on Garza (and keeping him around at what it will likely cost). Which makes the question even better, since Garza is a good baseball player.
  10. If I had to decide at this moment, I'd probably go ahead and put Pierce Johnson 4th, just because his ranking is based just as much on projection as Soler and Almora, who though they've at least seen the field aren't seasoned minor league vets by any means yet. Brett would be 5th, followed by Szczur and Candelario. Vitters, I'd guess would be 8th, but I'm quietly hoping Lake, Maples, and Whitenack have a strong final 2 months and pass him up.
  11. Agreed. It's hard for me to even get to #4 at this point. Baez, Soler, Almora are easy top 3 for everyone. After that, can you really put a guy striking out 35% of his ABs 4th? Can you put a pitcher there who has either gotten hurt this year, got hurt last year, or has thrown little to no pitches in game action this year? Can you put Szczur there, who's shown no power yet? That being said, I really like the group (including guys alluded to above) that would typically slot in the 8-15 range as far as pure talent/upside. A couple of those guys do something, and you have 3 potential studs at the top of the rankings, along with a few potential stud arms, you're talking about a really good system.
  12. I wonder if there's some truth to what JJ Cooper (I think) said a few weeks back, something along the lines that Brett might've taken this "discipline" thing too far, becoming too patient for his skill level, as he doesn't have the hand-eye or bat control to get certain pitches in deep counts. I'm paraphrasing there, but the way Cooper made it sound, it sounded like Brett should be trying to go after good pitches earlier in the count. I don't know. I know the "s" word is bad to say, but it SEEMS like he's striking out a lot without taking many pitches. Especially when he was going at his worst about a month ago, I would look at the pitch-by-pitch and he had several 3-4 pitch strike outs. Could be he's taking a lot of 1st pitch strikes and getting himself too far behind in the count, kinda proving Cooper right. But there's really no way to spin the Ks positively at this point. I'm one of Jackson's biggest fans, but it's pretty bad right now.
  13. Yep, you're talking about throwing 89-91 as a starter vs. throwing (from what I hear) mid 90s in relief. Assuming that's 94-96, that's 5 mph increase. Obviously, it's making a huge difference. Not sure it matters with him in this organization, but I'm sure someone will take notice and you'll see him in an ML bullpen in 2013 at some point.
  14. Just because its on the screen doesnt mean u have to read it. Thebasic sentiment is this forum is informative......lets keep it this way and end the discussion and potshots.
  15. If Webb wins the LT spot, Id hope Williams would still go back to LG. Id hate to see the best Olineman from last year on the bench, though Id imagine the coaches dont want to have to cange LG and OT again if one of the tackles gets hurt this year
  16. He might just deservedly win an MVP award for a change.
  17. Pitch him on 3 days rest, too. AND CUT OFF HIS HEAD How are you gonna feed him his own balls if he has no head? Think people!
  18. Well I'm not going to argue about the previews of a terrible movie from 10 years ago or whatever it is. Good, because you would lose that argument miserably.
  19. That doesn't paint a pretty picture for Dempster and places the blame for this debacle squarely on his shoulders. Without really knowing the details there isn't anything that Wren said that doesn't sound plausible. We don't know exactly what Dempster and Theo had agreed to however other than what Wren said which is second hand. Either way, Dempster nixed a trade that would have benefited the Cubs long term and for that he deserves to hear some crap from the fans (and FO). Death threats though? I highly doubt it and that sounds a lot like a player deflecting some of the immediate crap he thinks is coming his way. I think Eric Gordon Sr. is his PR Guy. Man, you need some new material.
  20. Dude, this needs to be your default message board persona.
  21. Damnit, he should be blowing this game for the Braves!
  22. Jacque Jones, Milton, Hawkins all claimed they received death threats/hate mail while on the Cubs. Can't think of any white dudes who have. I'm pretty sure he was taking a jab at you for your misuse of an apostrophe. Coloreds is plural, colored's is possessive. But both are racist!
  23. What about the hit he gave to the future of the Cubs organization?
  24. 2nd day in a row, after not hitting one for almost a month.
