  1. Saw on an earlier tweet that it was a ground ball that took a bad hop, not a straight line drive to the noggin. Ah, that makes sense. That makes him human I guess.
  2. Still, there was a reason they chose PSU over other schools in the first place, and a reason they didn't transfer already when all this was already going on. well, the reason they didn't transfer when this was going on was that they didn't have a waiver and would have to sit out a year. everyone knew the school's reputation was in shambles, but nobody knew if the ncaa would step in since no ncaa by-laws were violated and the ncaa has never levied a punishment for situations like this. after the freeh report and the comments by emmert last week, i would think that any player who didn't have his head lodged up his ass would start to consider other options, given the possibility of significant ncaa sanctions. Oh, I figured a waiver would/could be granted after the fact. My bad.

  4. I agree on the freshmen, but still they basically have 2 weeks to decide where they want to go and try to get playing time there. The JRs and SRs are also being punished and have obviously more invested in the university, and without the chance to still get years of eligibility somewhere else. Ultimately, I know there's no way to do anything without affecting the current kids at Penn State (Football, other sports, or non-athletic students period), but it still sucks that thousands of kids are going to be greatly affected by stuff that happened before they were students and clearly had no part of.
  5. I will be legitimately pissed off if Baez is moved up a level before Sept. There's really no reason for it. His numbers are good, but it's not like they are laughable over a super long period of time. He's had less than 200 plate appearance since highschool, which he just finished last year. No reason to move him up.
  6. I feel like it either should have been the death penalty or just a multitude of fines. I don't understand punishing these current kids for something that happened almost 15 years ago. Granted they can all transfer with no penalty, but practices are starting in a couple weeks and the kids that stay, freshmen in particular will never get to play in a bowl game. I understand that the current program will always suffer for past issues, but this is not cheating or breaking NCAA rules. This is freaking scumbaggery on the highest level. They should have gotten rid of the program completely, as the football program was used to lure these kids and the status of the football program was the reason for the cover-up. So, if you don't have the balls to get rid of the program completely, make them basically play football for 5 years for free. Make them donate all money to victims of rape, child abuse, etc.
  7. I got such a man crush on Soler. Built like an elite NFL WR. Brandon Marshall, Fitzgerald type build. Lean and muscular. In baseball, that translates to a lot of natural power. He absolutely smoked that HR. And to hit a 3B in the head with a line drive, you have to really destroy the ball. There's a huge difference in drilling someone 60 feet away in a vulnerable position after throwing a pitch than there is drilling someone probably 110 feet away and prepared in defensive position. I was already sold on him physically, after those 2 swings....I'm hooked.
  8. The high-fives sounded like fireworks. The HR sounded like a massive explosion. Regardless of how enhanced the sound was, he hit the [expletive] outta that ball.
  9. What do the last 15 years have to do with the team they have right now? Doesn't have anything to do with the current team. But it has everything to do with the current fans' expectations which was the damn point of my comment. Not sure what's so hard to understand about that. I just don't see the relevance. If my team were really good, my expectations would be high, regardless of the previous 15 years. The point isn't that Detroit is really good, but that only the current state of a team should dictate fan expectations. I'm not sure what you're so mad about, though. But that's not how it works. Pirates fans aren't spouting off all over the internet that they aren't WS favorites. Nets fans aren't claiming they're championship bound because they know their history and know they still have to get thru Miami. Bottom line a team in a division with 2 teams that were better than them last year (when healthy in the Bears case) and 1 of those was the best team in the league last year coming off a SuperBowl win the previous season. It's fine to have expectations but the fact that nobody is putting what was a perennial loser ahead of plenty of better or similar teams with a better recent history should not anger Lions fans.
  10. OH SNAP! keithlaw ‏@keithlaw Soler just completely unloaded on one - two run HR to deep left center
  11. I asked this question before. But he strikes me as a guy that is going to make a major league team, and probably be best as a utility guy, but he won't kill you getting the majority of the starts in a 2B platoon situation. He's a solid defender that has played SS, 2B, 3B, and all 3 OF positions in the last few years in the minors. Seems to have a really good idea at the plate with a very good walk rate. He hasn't hit LHPs at all this year (being a LH hitter), so platoon is going to be the way to go for him.
  12. Soler grounds out to the pitcher in his 1st AB.
  13. Assuming you are talking about my post. I NEVER said he's done nothing to suggest he could implode. What I did say is that what he did in Miami can't really be considered imploding. He didn't miss a single game due to suspension. I don't recall any blowups in practice (ala the Denver practice where he batted down every pass instead of catching them and walked thru drills). Not saying he was a model citizen in Miami, but he didn't do anything that affected them negatively on the field and his PR issues were squashed.

  15. These last 2 games make me want to go into 2011 mode and not watch baseball for the rest of the summer
  16. Baez with a flyout and throwing error to start the game. Error led to an unearned run, though it would have helped if Peralta didn't walk 3 hitters around the E6.
  17. Tennessee pushed across 1 in the 11th, to take the lead. But after starting the inning by getting the 1st 2 guys out, Casey Harman gives up a single, walks the bases loaded, and then gives up a walkoff 2-run single to a .192 hitter on a 1-2 count.
  18. Tennessee going into the 11th, now tied at 10. Both teams scored 2 in the 10th.
  19. Having gone to literally 100 games in SB, I have maybe seen 2 other balls over the batters eye
  20. Wouldn't a B or B- prospect be a good return for Soto? I know he said *might*, but lets just say it's possible. From Sickels list (before the season)... Angels had 2 B and 6 B- prospects. They are in order: Garrett Richards/Jean Segura/Taylor Lindsey/Kaleb Cowart/CJ Cron/John Hellweg/Luis Jimenez/Nick Maronde. Yes, I'd take any one of those guys for Soto straight up.
  21. that may or may not be true, but if it is that's only because our pitching sucks. his ceiling really isn't that high, except maybe as a reliever. he's barely averaged 7 K/9 IP and that's as a 23 year old in A-ball. Not sure why he repeated High A, because he made over 20 starts there last year with decent success. He may be ultimately a reliever, but he does have an improving sinker (low-mid 90s) and doesn't walk people. His secondary pitches are why the K rate isn't higher, but I do think he can be a #3 starter at his ceiling.
  22. Agree about the anticipaton. If the Cubs get Eovaldi for Dempster, then that would free them to take strictly the best prospects for Garza, without having to worry about if they get an ML ready pitcher in return. I still don't know why the Dodgers would trade Eovaldi right now. Isn't Billingsley hurt now? Granted they would get an upgrade from Eovaldi to Dempster, but they're still looking at Stephen Fife potentially getting significant starts. And who knows how long Crapuano will be solid for them?
  23. The key is the "focus". Szczur's focus in college was football. Just like Samardzija, he was an All American caliber football player (albeit FCS). I don't know how much of one he missed for the other, but results would seem to suggest that he missed a lot of training/coaching/development in baseball for football. That's not to say he should be treated like he's never played baseball in his life, but even though he's 23, this is only his 2nd year of playing ONLY baseball. Again, not saying he'll develop into a future stud in the majors, but the results have been pretty solid so far. If he develops power, he could be a really good player, but even if he doesn't the improved walk rate suggests he could be a contributor at the top (or bottom) of the lineup who plays average or better defense and gets on base.
  24. Amaya and Candelario each walked first time thru the order. 8 walks in 134 PAs for Candyman so far. Acceptable for an 18-year old.
