  1. Goodbye Aramis
  2. Jake (San Clemente) Hoyer and Co. was in San Diego for two years. Is that enough time for their player development strategies (actually drafting high end talent and growing the scouting department) to stick in their absence? How did Byrnes spend on player dev in AZ? Klaw (1:40 PM) The system is loaded right now, one of the best in the game. It seems nuts for Moorad to let the two main architects of that walk away with a fruit basket. From Law's 10/20 Chat.....
  3. He has the Cubs listed as a deadline day winner. His article is now up on his blog at ESPN, if anyone has insider access...............
  4. Mayo was on MLB Network at about 11:40pm and said they were close......
  5. I'm in town for a family wedding July 4th weekend and I was able to score 6 bleacher tickets for the Saturday afternoon game through the pre-sale. They were a little pricy (due to the premium game), the 15% kicker and the taxes and fees. Worked out to be about $98 per. Hope it doesn't rain :-)
  6. Dale (Calvert City KY) Is Matt Szczur a big time baseball prospect, now that he will be solely focused on the sport? What is his ceiling? Klaw (1:41 PM) Every area guy I talked to about him this spring called him a 4th/5th outfielder with plus speed and outstanding makeup but limited baseball tools.
  7. Not sure where Levine is coming up with his info. since he seems to be the only one hot on this rumor, but found the following snippet at the bottom of recent article from Verducci of SI discussing the Crawford signing...... .
  8. From Callis latest draft chat...... I know you just released the Draft Report Cards, but I would grade the Cubs 2010 Draft as a C. No stand out performances so far...Hayden Simpson has not pitched so the jury is still out on whether Tim Wilken was correct on selecting him that high. Tough to be a Cubs fan these days as usual. Jim Callis: The jury is still out on Simpson, and I wouldn't have taken him as high as the Cubs did. That said, I did like a lot of their later picks. Outfielder Matt Szczur (fifth round) and righthander Ben Wells (seventh) could be flat-out steals. I also thought they really cleans up in round 10-16 with guys like righties Aaron Kurcz, Austin Reed and Ryan Hartman, lefty Eric Jokisch and second baseman Pierre LePage. Don't be surprised if this draft turns out to be a B in the long run.
  9. I read that Lee is only expected to be a Type B FA anyways. That figures he would be a "B". The Braves now could be looking at a late first round sandwich compensation pick if Lee leaves ATL as a free agent and he is indeed a "B", without having to offer him arbitration.
  10. From last week's chat... Jack (Toronto) Is Starlin Castro an elite prospect? Top 25? 50? Jim Callis (2:04 PM) He's one of the best shortstop prospects in the minors. Not sure I'd put him in the Top 25 overall yet, but I could see him in the 26-50 range.
  11. Felix Hernandez helped us out today. It looks like we nailed down the 15th overall choice. Therefore our 1st round pick should be protected......
  12. Yeah, but we won't gain a draft pick when the Cards or Brewers sign Rich Harden to reasonable 2yr deal. I suppose that's possible assuming we do not offer arbitration - I'd have to think the Cubs would offer both Grabow and Harden. I can't seem to think of a scenario they would want to offer Gregg for the fear he might accept and we'd have to pay him quite a bit next year. There can't be that many teams out there that would be willing to offer a multi year deal for a middle tier (at best) closer.
  13. Chris Huseby Why isn't there much hype with this guy? I seem to recall we gave him a huge bonus a couple of years back as he was coming off of arm surgery. His numbers look pretty darn solid in the pen at Peoria this year. He'll be 22 next year (Daytona?). He seems to be on track. Anyone know about his offerings? Any chance he may revert back to starting or is he destined to stay in the pen?
  14. Len, Thanks for taking the time to chat. I realize it's early, but the Cubs bullpen in 2009- stronger or weaker than 2008 ? Why? Thanks again.
  15. It's actually 7: Wells, Hart, Johnson, Blanco, Germain, Snyder, and Taguchi. And a Mark Peel sighting on Bruce's blog. Cubsfan26 asked about the possibility of sending Gaudin down. The first reply to that was from mlp, which I'm fairly certain is Peel because the response has the detail about the waivers process that Mark had here. Was Peel Cubs2003 here? on Cubs.com he was.
  16. It ain't over until it's over. That's right Yogi
  17. Marquis seems immovable to me. I'd rather not have him, but he won't kill us as a # 5 starter. The Mets need starting pitching. After acquiring Peavy, how about this scenario... Zambrano and Theriot to the Mets for Reyes.
  18. Just thinking out loud, but if the Cubs were to acquire Peavy, wouldn't we then have to move Marquis? Good luck to Hendry in making that happen. What if we traded our resident head case pitcher with the NTC clause and get the impact bat back for RF that we need. Peavy, Dempster, Lilly, Harden & Marquis is still a darned good staff.
  19. I know that the FA compensation is based on a players previous two years worth of stats (compiled by the Elias Sports Bureau). What I don't know is how that will shake down for Dempster. His closer #'s were pretty marginal in 2007 and his starter #'s have obviously been very good this year. I hope comes out as an "A", but I'm not so certain that he will. Rosenthal had a small piece on Dempster in one of his latest updates, and he thinks that Dempster isn't going anywhere. Says that Hendry and Dempster share a similar relationship that Wood and Hendry have. Whatever.....Just passing it on.
  20. Luis Montanez homers for Baltimore in his 1st career AB.
  21. BA had PHL ranked as the #22 overall system before the season began. Cardenas, Outman, & Spencer are PHL's #2, #4, & #28 overall prospects. PHL's best prospect is pitcher Carlos Carrasco. Jason Donald & Lou Marson are also solid prospects, and it appears PHL was able to hold onto them.
  22. What happened to Eric Patterson? Wasn't he the "organizational player of the year" just a year or so ago? His AAA stats look decent so far this year. AAAA player? Hopefully at the very least he's attractive enough to package up with a couple of other prospects for an arm at the deadline....
