  1. You're not suggesting Manny ISN'T a distraction, are you? The argument whether the team can take on a distraction aside, I don't think there is anyway you can label Manny as anything other than a distraction. -Refusing to go in a game -Three requests for trades in four years -Controversey over being sick in NY, yet having dinner with Yankees Those are just off the top of my head. Manny is an enigma. I would welcome him on the team, but I also recognize him as a likely distraction. His WS MVP is a testament to his skill, not his ability to be a team player necessarily. What I'm trying to say is that the impact of his distraction is overrated. Not only did his team make it to the world series last year in spite of his distractions, he also turned out to be the best player in the series that was the biggest in the history of his team. Maybe they were able to handle it better than most and maybe his distractive tendencies are overblown. The bottom line is I honestly don't think his supposed distractive shortcomings come close to overshadowing his unbelievable play.
  2. 20 million dollar, I need my days off, Manny? I'll pass Career 1.007 OPS, first time since 98 not in top 7 in MLB, Manny? I'll accept. People are so picky. Who cares if he can run, catch, throw, asks out of a game.....he's an elite offensive force? I agree with your arguments, Raw. However, I can see no way that Manny is brought to the Cubs. Management spent an entire offseason cleaning out the "distractions" from the roster. Bringing Manny in would be an obvious about face for the organization. Manny is the embodiment of a distraction, and this organization has invested quite a bit of ridding the dugout of such characters. I don't either. However, to completely dismiss one of the top hitters in the game because he asked for a day off is not right. I've never seen so many people make petty excuses NOT to want a top flight offensive player. It has nothing to do with just having day off. He wasn't willing to help a teammate and by extension, he was less willing to help his team... It is not the first time. Plus, he constantly tells the media he wants to be traded during a crucial stretch of games. It's hard to argue that he isn't a distraction. I agree, that World Series MVP is quite a distraction and not a team player.
  3. After reading through this thread, I have figured out why people hate Dusty. The people who hate Dusty are all groupthinking, problem with authorty, self-important, trying to be intellectual, making up for their life's failures, racists.
  4. so it's okay if a millionaire gets his (or her's, controversy) feelings hurt, but an entirely different story of "joe schmoe" gets his feelings hurt? that's ridiculous and selfish. I agree. We shouldn't cheer for wins either or for errors because it hurts the players feelings. It's unfathomable this has reached 9 pages.
  5. I totally agree. Everytime a player is suggested here he is picked apart. Soriano is a good player. No, he isn't perfect, but he is possibly the best option out there. I don't know who people expect us to get. Do we want to improve the team or do we want to wait for some mythical flawless player to appear so we can aquire him?
  6. 9 walks today from the Cubs pitchers. You want to avoid that if at all possible.
  7. Screen name a bit decieving eh? I already made that joke!
  8. Dude, optimism at this point is moot. The Cubs have BARELY won the games vs St Louis, and Frisco. I mean we have gotten totally lucky. The Cubs SHOULD have won 6 in a row. They lacked driving in runners in scoring position. The team as a whole is not doing well, and IS choking. To win the wild card, we need win streaks. I tip my cap to the Astros, looks like they'll win it again this year. Quite the misnomer!
  9. Wow, Jerome is an adept tightrope walker.
  10. Does Adam Dunn play for the Diamondbacks? When is he due up?
  11. I realize what you mean. But good lord. I dont think people really realize the class of people he is in now. The list is now: Hank Aaron Babe Ruth Barry Bonds Willie Mays Sammy Sosa That is some GOOD company. I know this is a touchie subject with you and some others and I don't want this to turn into an agrument but, not everyone thinks Sammy's homerun totals are legitimate. A lot of people think the marquee sluggers of this era should have an "*" next to their records. I'm not so sure they'd be excited to hear about Sosa's march up the list. You can't get mad at people who post negitive things about Sammy because they should "let it go" (now that he's not on the team anymore) and then turn around and laud his accomplishments in the same forum. You have to take the good with the bad, IMO. I'd rather see neither, personally. No point on ganging up when he's down but there also isn't much point in overstressing the positives in, what has been for Sammy, an awful season. Like I said, I'm not trying to start an argument, but I'm just pointing out other people's perspectives.
  12. I suppose it's either these threads or threads detailing every homerun that Sammy hits and where it places him all time. I'd rather have neither.
  13. Dude, that sig! Priceless!!!!!
  14. Someone called into the Score and told me that I don't like Dusty because I'm a racist.
  15. I'm a big fan of the lineup today. That being said, it's almost a given they get shut out!
  16. :D Now you're talking! Or booing? I would be all over that chant. Very Conan-esque.
  17. My objection with the Erstad scenerio primarily came from my opinion that Estrada was in front of the plate (toward the diamond) and, thus, not in a position where he would expect or prepare for contact. Barajas was blocking the plate, so even though Sammy's cleats came in high, Barajas had an opportunity to protect himself and prepare for a collision. I think that both were a situation where the guys coming to home were a little out of control. They made quick decisions on how to get to the plate and both were questionable decisions. I don't think harm was intended in either case. I'm going to shut up now because I don't want to derail the thread.
  18. I don't think so.
  19. I think it's interesting how this is greeted with "Mistakes happen" but people wanted Erstad to get drilled in the face and suspended for life. I think they were similar incidents. Just an observation.
  20. You're going for the gold here!
  21. Oh my gosh, the players feel bad! Can you imagine if I came to your work and boo-ed you? Even though no one roots for you for decades to "win" at your job, 40k people don't watch you on a daily basis, no one sits around you consuming beer after beer, and no one lives and dies by your companies performance, this is still a flawless comparison. Working in a cube and playing for the Cubs is exactly the same! This is the most despicable, awful thing in the history of mankind! I will immediately call everyone who does this a classless loser who most likely steals candy from children. I am totally embarrassed to be a Cubs fan! Even some of the players said they don't like booing! Can you imagine what it would take for a player to come out and say that he doesn't like to see other players booed? This is a completely unforeseen and amazing turn of events! ---------------- Can we stop with this? Booing is obviously an emotional reaction by fans (who have probably been drinking) and are very emotionally attached to the team's performance. Many people have players who the irrationally love and irrationally hate (I think we have seen this here) and a lot of people say things they don't mean in the heat of an emotional moment. God, just look at the game thread. People threaten to kill players there on occasion. It doesn't have anything to do with "Teaching the player a lesson" or anything like that 95% of the time. People who think they are teaching someone a lesson, are...well... Not everyone who boos is some classless loser. Hawkins isn't even on our team anymore. Who cares about this guy anymore?
