  1. So what I want to know is did Michael pat down Barry before he let him in the house??......Oh wait...my bad I thought we were talking about Michael Irvin hear
  2. They've also never won a World Series since well before WWI. At some point, they have to get over their supposedly responsible stance on contract length and actuallly acquire impact players. They've also never pitched an entire game with firstbasemen. Your response was illogical. There are a number of things the Cubs have never done since they won the World Series. I seriously doubt that not offering 5 year contracts had anything to do with that. Besides, it's only recently that the Cubs have become a big-market team. I'm pretty sure the 60 or so years immediatlely following 1908 they only offered 1 year deals - do you think that had something to do with them not winning in those years? My response was illogical? In what way. The Cubs have a stance against longterm deals, going to arbitration and hitters who take walks. While it's fine to try to be responsible in contract deals, sometimes you have to be willing to go that extra year to get a real impact player. Their current methods have obviously not worked. Would it really be a bad thing to get in on talks for guys like Guerrero, Tejada and the like just because you have a rule against going over 4 years? There are a limited number of opportunities to get guys to sign for less than the biggest deal out there, and you can't field an entire team every year with only guys you lock up early to team friendly deals. Sometime you actually have to get in the bidding for studs. Of course you can try and get lucky from year to year with just the right mix of those cheaper players, but when you have a $100+ million payroll, there's no need to handicap yourself with such overzealous frugality. How can you be willing to overpay guys like Neifi and Rusch just because you can, and then not get in the bidding for guys who will make a difference?
  3. Does it have something to do with Jimmy Edmonds and a construction worker? I'm here all week folks. Don't forget to tip your waitreses and bartenders. It's a guilty pleasure I know but I just love the Jimmy Edmonds jokes
  4. Just heard the radio that Torre also told the reporter that their best cf on the team was Marion Rivera and they are thinking of moving him also. I think he was jesting the reporter who took the ball and ran with it.
  5. Do you think he might try to sign Farns and Furcal so he will have some drinking buddies
  6. Just curious - how do you know how much of a drunk either are and just what is your definition of a "drunk"?
  7. That's a wldly superstitious and irrational thing to ask to be taken seriously If I wasn't wildly irrational and superstitious ( or is it vice versa?) I probably wouldn't be a Cub fan.
  8. Seriously I think the key to the 2006 season is to wear less of that crappy blue alternate jersey most Cubs pitchers choose to wear.
  9. Nope. Eyre's never been a closer, and I wasn't talking about last year. Look at Cpatterson's post, he knew what I was talking about. In 2003, batters hit .227 against Ryan with a .330 OBP. In 2004, batters hit .219 against Eyre with a .310 OBP. The differences, of course, were in their respective opponent's SLG and ERA. Ryan's was much lower than Eyre's, due most likely to his superior stuff along with some other factors. As for WHIP, Eyre's was 1.33 and Ryan's was 1.37. I'm not trying to say that Eyre is equal to Ryan, becaues I know Ryan is much better. I was just trying to say that, in his career, he has had 3 good years, 2 of which were stellar. The third, 2003, was not stellar. Eyre might not be the best comparison, but he was the first mediocre lefthander that came to mind. I'm sure I could find more. Try Steve Kline, Chuck McElroy and Mike Stanton. Ryan has 42 career saves (exactly 10 less than Howry) works out to about 1.1 mil per lifetime save. Good deal for BJ!
  10. I know I can get shot for this but I'm still in favor of Cpat in the 8 hole if we can pick up a couple of more bats.
  11. That is correct. It will be a piece of glass there instead of bushes. You are not serious are you?
  12. Ease up on the personal attacks. It's just a difference of opinion. He's responding to someone calling JH a moran is their avatar. You may want to ease up on your hate for some of the Cubs. I don't "hate" any of the Cubs TBCF. I don't like some of them as players, and have criticism of moves, but I don't "hate" them. Look, I just want everyone to get along. If you disagree with those of us that are critical of JH's decisions, or whatever, fine, that great, but let's debate that instead of talking about how we don't know what we're talking about. Likewise, there's no reason for any of "us" to call anyone a moron, or a moran, or a "Moran", unless your last name is Moran. In any case, let's just chill. Let's agree to disagree. Or, let's have a constructive argument. :D Well said. I think we should drop the "moran" or " moron" and the " if the Cubs do this or that I will never watch them again". I'm pretty sure neither of those lead to any constructive arguements. Disclaimer: Not pointing fingers at anyone in particular - just my opinion.
  13. will all of the improvements be ready for this summer? picturs plz. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20051116&content_id=1268924&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc Try this. Some of the pictures kind of startled me seeing all that stuff torn down to the brick wall in the outfield and the loss of the bushes in center. Don't know if that is permanent.
  14. I'll take Adam Dunn and Eric Milton please. That's a pretty good analogy. I'd take that deal also, I'm not sure what Milton is due this year but he made 5.3 mil last year - I'm just basing my thoughts on the fact that we have 31 pages on a possible ( looks probable now ) signing of a 3-4 mil pitcher who had a pretty decent year last year. That seems like a lot of money also but I guess that is the cost of Dusty proofing the bullpen.
  15. I sorta agree with that but do we trust Dusty to use him properly? I guess it depends on who we pick up for rf.
  16. You are missing a big piece here. They traded for Lowell, in part, must it was only a small part. They traded for Beckett and took on Lowell's salary, kind of like how the Cubs traded for Alfonseca and took on Clement's salary, or traded for Lofton and took on Ramirez's salary. I'm not missing anything - I'm not even saying it was a bad deal for Bosox - I'm just saying that 9 mil is a lot of money for someone who sucked as bad as Lowell did last year. Hopefully for them Beckett will make the deal worth it. I'm also saying that if Hendry spent 9 mil for a similiar player in a similiar situation we would be hanging him in effigy ( so to speak) on this board today.
  17. I'm just trying to imagine the brouhaha on this board if we traded prospects in part for a 3B who makes 9 mil and had an ops of 658 last year when we already had an 800 ops guy who made 2.5 million last year. Wow!
  18. I would definitely buy into any medical advice that Murf on the score was giving out. He's not a medical doctor but he plays one on the radio
  19. But can he catch the ball? Who cares?? He's fast - the only qualification needed to be a great leadoff man in Dustyball.
  20. Isn't Moneyball just about a small market low budget team taking advantage of inefficiences in the market as opposed to just getting guys to take walks? Don't you think that if for some reason teams stopped valuing home runs Beane would start snapping up all the cheap 30 hr guys on the market? As for the Cub's aggressive approach my non sabermetric viewpoint on that is JUST TAKE A FEW PITCHES ONCE IN A WHILE!!! It drives me crazy when we get into the 5th inning and out pitch count is in the 90 range and the opposing pitcher is in the 60's. Drive me nuts!!
  21. RTI just quoted you cause I love your sig " Thats just great the cops have your address" - " No they don't I listed it as 1060 West Addison!" Love it. My thought on center field would be to trade Patterson for Bradley or if we pick up a big bat for right keep Corey in center and batting 8th and hope it works out. If not trade for a stopgap cf at the deadline or bring up Pie.
  22. Ya know the book is setting on my coffee table and I have intended to take a look at that but have not. Am taking next week off to do nothing so that could be pretty high on my agenda!
  23. How about Patterson for Bradley? Are Bill James projections really out for 2006? Just for kicks last year I used James projections to pick a couple of fantasy teams - one of which was league champion I modestly admit :D
