Yes and no. My kids were more interested in getting the bobbleheads, so we stood in line at the Right Field gate while watching the ceremony on my phone. There were a ton of people in Gallagher Way (obviously), so we avoided that area. I'm happy for Sandberg though and it's always great to see him around the ballpark.

When I posted this thread, I fully expected there to be statistics that would indicate it isn't really an issue (or at least not strongly support the theory), and it didn't take long for that to happen! I agree that it is probably an "all teams do this" thing more than a Cubs-specific issue, and likely a result of pitching being so good now that it is impossible for all but the best hitters to truly control the strike zone.

Joe Maddon used to preach "accepting walks" and there are multiple quotes from him about that subject. The current Cubs offense is not doing that. They are TAKING walks to be sure, but they are taking strikeouts along with them. It often appears they are going up to the plate just hoping for the walk, rather than trying to make something happen by putting the ball in play. Accepting walks implies that a hitter should go to the plate looking to hit the ball, but be willing to walk and not force the issue when a pitcher isn't giving them pitches in the zone. In most circumstances, it does not mean that a hitter should be actively TRYING to walk. I'm tired of seeing guys take strikes down the middle of the plate, or even taking a third strike a millimeter outside the box and then complaining when the umpire rings them up. The Cubs offense needs to get more aggressive. They need to stop waiting for pitchers to walk them and stop leaving everything in the hands of the umpire on a borderline 3-2 pitch. Is this a flaw in the Cubs overall offensive approach? Are they preaching patience to the detriment of production?

I just find the idea of negotiating off days into a baseball PBP deal to be odd. An off day here or there for health or personal issues, sure, but I don't really understand having a significant quantity of predetermined off days for no other reason than to take days off. Maybe my expectations are unfair and unrealistic, but I have always considered broadcasting to be an everyday job. Pat may very well have a valid reason for needing frequent days off, but the other side of that is, if the Cubs know that, they need to start working in someone other than Zaidman.

Zaidman Is filling in again today on the radio. Is Pat ok? He sounds fine when he is broadcasting games, but he has been missing a lot of games this season.

That sucks. After an off day, Busch should be in the lineup against all but the toughest lefties. Spoiler alert: Quintana does not qualify as one of those.

And when/if the Yankees decline that option, then what? How many teams are going to be banging down the door for an injury prone 35 year old first baseman? As much as I would have loved him to come back to the Cubs to finish out his career, there simply isn't a fit here anymore. Not even at the league minimum, should it come to that.

I have no idea who that is, but if they are actually going to tear it down I'm all for it. Narrator: "They didn't tear it down." I hate to say it, because Ayo is easily my favorite player on the team, but I think it might be a wise move to sell extremely high on him as well. He is on a very team friendly contract and has a lot of value, but I'm not sure they are going to be able to afford him when his current deal is up in 2 years.

I have been enjoying the game and all the stories. 99 year old Bill Greason (former Negro League World Series pitcher and Iwo Jima veteran) throwing out the first pitch was awesome too. And I like not seeing the strike zone graphic on the screen. I have gotten used to it being there, but this is better.
