  1. I have to agree with this somewhat. Part of me wants a weak NL that the Cubs can breeze right through, but the other part of me is tired of the onsidedness and would like to see the talent balanced out between leagues. Hey who knows, maybe Santana will us the All-Star game and be the reason for the Cubs having home field advantage in the World Series!
  2. Probably just because it's a tangible sign that the season is one step closer.Yep, it's more symbolic than anything else. There's nothing specifically about pitchers and catchers reporting that gets me excited, but it means we're one step closer to spring training games, followed by the regular season.
  3. I'm hurting for my sports fix right now and am counting down the days until pitchers and catchers report. With the Bears not making the playoffs, the Bulls and Fighting Illini being terrible, and the Hollywood writers strike, this is the worst down period that I can ever remember. I think I may pop in the Kerry Wood 20 strikeout DVD tonight to help pass the time.
  4. What time do tickets generally go on sale?
  5. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-080120cubs,1,908462.story?coll=cs_tab01_layout I have a problem with this part of the article... It would seem to me that they are locking the new owner into a stadium deal in the short term, but are making it more likely that the owner will move the team in the long term. If the owner has to pay rent and doesn't have flexibility to make changes to the park, why wouldn't he consider other options as soon as the contractual obligations are fulfilled? I think people should see through Tribune Company's attempt to make this sale about keeping the Cubs in Wrigley Field, when it is truly only about squeezing every last penny out of the team.
  6. Link This sucks. I travel for work about once or twice per year on average and I think this will be the 3rd year out of the last 4 that I have been out of town the day Cubs tickets go on sale...
  7. He may not be ready by that time, but Jody Davis is a genuine MLB manager prospect. Yes, yes indeed. :D
  8. Maybe that will sink in to people soon. I'll be curious to see whether Clemens is too arrogant to realize this.
  9. If the Cubs do end up trading for Roberts, someone should print out this entire thread and mail it to him.
  10. Clemens is attempting to hide behind his defamation suit. My guess is that he will continue to use that as an excuse not to talk to Congress, then will drop the lawsuit once the hearings are over. An article posted today on ESPN.com indicates that the players were identified well in advance, so either Clemens is lying about not knowing that he would be named or the union withheld information from their own players. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3195721
  11. Personally, I think he still has to prove that he IS a #2. What more does he have to do? He was probably the best pitcher on the Cubs last year. For starters, he has to win more than 11 games. Granted he had poor run support last season, but a #2 starter needs to do better than 11 wins regardless of run support. I like Rich Hill, but I agree that he still has more to prove to be a solid #2 starter.
  12. OOTP looks similar to a sim I used to use about 20 years ago called MicroLeague Baseball. I've been playing since OOTP3. It's a great baseball sim and online leagues are also a lot of fun. If nothing else, it helps pass the time in the offseason!
  13. He is throwing pain-free off flat ground, so that must mean he is ready for a big return!
  14. Next up, replacing the ivy with poison ivy... better known as the Zanfel Wall.
  15. So if Clemens faces a similar situation as Bonds where he has to testify in front of a grand jury, will he put himself in a position to commit perjury and possibly face jail time? If so, I hope the prosecutors would go after him just as hard as Bonds.
  16. And just ook how terribly that turned out for the Red Sox.
  17. Yeah, I'm getting there too. It's not like this decision came out of nowhere. Fukudome has had months, if not years, to think about it. I'm all for him taking his time to field offers and choose the best one, but he at least must have made his mind up if he's going to play in the MLB next year.
  18. This is completely hypothetical and I realize there is a long way to go this offseason with free agency and trades, but what happens if the Cubs lose out on Fukudome and end up adding little or no payroll from last season. How will they be able to justify the 20-25% ticket increases?
  19. What the hell, are all the GMs going out to the bars or something? Will Fukudome's agent be fielding drunk dials? Karaoke It's how business gets done in Japan. Hendry has to get a perfect score on Rock Band or the deal is off. I just got a mental image of Hendry on drums, Lou playing guitar, and Yosh Kiwano on vocals. I think it's time for bed...
  20. I don't quite understand the seemingly rushed negotations. I don't see any reason why Fukudome should feel the need to sign any deal right away considering they just now started fielding offers.
  21. Yes, but by definition saying that they aren't going to trade Fuld makes him untouchable.
  22. Another gem from Hendry... Awesome, Fuld is untouchable now when his value may be at its peak.
  23. Won't be long before everything is a prime game.
  24. Exactly. This deal puts Woody in the closer role and allows the two likely better relievers - Howry and Marmol - to fill in the most important portions of the game. Had we not re-signed Wood and put Marmol or Howry in the closer role, we would have, at best, a young pitcher coming in critical portions of the game. I'm much more comfortable seeing Howry or Marmol enter in the 7th with the bases loaded and a one-run lead. Excellent deal. It's a lot of money, but it's just one year and if he's healthy he'll make it worth it. Wuertz? Slider, slider, slider, slider, slider, slider...
  25. As long as they don't have to park or pay for concessions. Then they better work a full day with some overtime.
