It's about not expending your somewhat limited resources on a borderline playoff contender. I get it that anything can happen in the playoffs and the goal is generally just to get to the playoffs and hope for the best, but there are only so many prospect "bullets" that can be used before the farm system has been depleted. I would prefer to spend those when they can take a team from good to great, rather than from average to slightly above average. This year's team just feels like it is more than 1 good starting pitcher away from being a World Series contender. when you need to cement a playoff berth it makes a lot more sense to go all in than when you are locked into one. this makes no sense. this is a much higher leverage spot in which to use said bullets. If you are the 1998 Cubs, sure, but the strategy can be a bit more conservative with a team that is built to be competitive for several years. Missing the playoffs for a year would suck, but it isn't the end of the world.
