  1. I'm starting to come around on Schwindel as a possible piece for 2022. Has he ever played other positions? It's hard to justify carrying a non full time player who can only play 1B. Any chance he can be passable at the corner outfield spots?
  2. This guy wins everything.
  3. When is the last time JD did a game?
  4. Or, it could be the fact that nobody cares what Kevin PIllar has to say. These are terrible takes. Three players made the thumbs down sign and one of the most prominent baseball reporters out there calls out the two minorities but doesn't mention the white guy. That's bad for a number of reasons but the main one is a racial bias. Racial bias in sports is definitely a thing and we have seen examples of it in the past. But also, Kevin Pillar has a much lower profile than Baez and Lindor and is largely irrelevant. Both of those things can be true.

  6. Yeah, I think the impact is being seriously overblown. Javy's actions certainly don't help his chances of returning to the Mets, but that was unlikely anyway following their post trade deadline collapse. For every other team, this isn't going to factor into their decision-making one way or another. The only thing that is going to damage Javy's value is his disappointing performance on the field over the past few seasons. I do side mostly with Sandy Alderson on the issue itself. I understand that you can't have players openly mocking a team's own fans, whether those fans are booing or not. Maybe the Mets could have handled the situation more quietly, but the cat was already out of the bag after Javy's comments. Ultimately, I think this will all blow over in the near future and people will have forgotten about it by the offseason.
  7. He is definitely still a solid mid-rotation starter, but perhaps this was a necessary wake up call that he isn't the ace that the Cubs can build a staff around. The concern that I have is whether he is a guy that can sustain performance as he ages. You can argue that he doesn't rely on velocity, but everyone needs velocity to a point. Can Hendricks lose a few MPH off his fastball and still be a viable pitcher?
  8. He's going to have to pitch later.
  9. It will always be the BP Cup to me. I'm not going to let some corporate sponsor tell me what to call it!
  10. No JD again? Who knew we were getting the college of announcers this year.
  11. I know almost everyone on this board hates Mark Grace, but how does Bill Buckner make the Cubs' HOF over him? Grace had a higher OPS by over 50 points, did it over a longer period of time, and was also a better defender.
  12. https://www.si.com/mlb/2021/08/18/mlb-proposes-salary-floor-lower-luxury-tax-mlbpa This is only a proposal, and it almost certainly won't make it through as initially described, but anything along these lines seems really bad for the Cubs. It would give the Ricketts' another excuse not to go over $180 million.
  13. 5 Earned Runs in 3.1 innings. Yep, that checks out. Sure, he's the worst starting pitcher in all of MLB, but let's give him another shot!
  14. Re: the thread title Skyline Chili does suck, but Montgomery Inn Saratoga Chips are excellent.
  15. It still seems like 5 is a best case scenario, with somewhere in the 6-8 range being the most likely outcome. I just can't see catching any of the bottom 4 at this point.
  16. It's hard to feel sorry for guys playing baseball for a living, but it has to be a miserable feeling playing on this team right now.
  17. As bad as the Cubs have been lately, they have barely moved in the standings. There are a LOT of really bad teams.
  18. Out with Bryzzo. In with Schwindom.
  19. Jake is coming dangerously close to this: http://www.highheatstats.com/2012/06/the-10-worst-eras-of-all-time/
  20. yeah you can't guarantee that, and it's probably not even true I don't know if anyone IDed him, but I've definitely seen plenty of people online still today saying they think he was dropping the n-bomb and it's just being "covered up" or whatever. That said, however, this blew up before anyone with MLB said anything, so pinning it on some kind of vague official statement that didn't ID the guy or show the clip is a stretch. This was a thing BECAUSE of social media; it didn't become a thing on social media because of anything the Rockies or MLB or the Players' Union said. You are right. The story had already blown up prior to the Players Association statement. Official statements like that do lend credibility to the accusation though. I know there is a rush to judgment that is often spurred by social media, but we all have to be better about reaching conclusions based on limited information. That is especially true for organizations making official statements, like the Rockies and MLBPA. There are ways to respond to indicate that the situation is being taken seriously without immediately assuming the intent. That is all I am asking for.
  21. Did you miss the part of the story where there wasn't actually a racial slur? Or are you ok with calling someone out for racism where it didn't exist? I wanted them to not make an official statement claiming racism when they clearly didn't have all the information. Am I ok with calling "someone" out for racism? Yes. Obviously. Who exactly was the victim here? While not directly named, there was a fan accused of repeatedly shouting a racist term at a player. There are videos of that fan, and people can figure out who he is. While perhaps a bit odd that he was so intent on getting a mascot's attention, he didn't deserve to be labeled a racist. Again, get the facts straight before issuing public statements.

  23. Of course not. But the mob mentality of social media is represented on Twitter, and those cries for immediate action don't always fall on deaf ears. It is fine to issue a statement that an investigation is taking place and racist behavior won't be tolerated, but it isn't fine to flag something as "abhorrent racial animus" when you don't have all the facts. So, what happened, specifically, that was upsetting to you? [tweet] [/tweet]
