  1. I didn't have getting dominated by Steven Matz on my list of possible outcomes today.
  2. Reminds me of my little league kids with the first baseman chasing the ball across the infield.
  3. A lot of weak contact in the air for Cubs batters so far today.
  4. A week ago I was dreaming of the unlikely scenario where the Cubs would take 5 of 6 from the Sox and Cardinals to get back into the race. Forget that. Go get the sweep!
  5. Not a terrible idea to get Happ a day off against a lefty.
  6. Someday we will all tell our grandkids about the Cubs team that was on the verge of trading their best players and then never lost again.
  7. Wow. That's gotta be a huge confidence boost for Palencia. Really interesting that Assad wasn't allowed to continue into the 9th, but maybe Ross is trying to keep him fresh for possible long relief spots?
  8. This team is clearly AT LEAST one bullpen arm short. I like Palencia, but he can't be trusted in important spots. Kay is basically just a mop up guy. And we aren't even sure what role Wesneski is going to play. That's too many guys to have to work around in late inning situations.
  9. That got a little scary. I guess the Cubs try to get through this one with Assad in the 9th?
  10. I assume Alzolay is down today, so hopefully the offense shows up and puts this one out of reach.
  11. Credit where credit is due... Smyly got off to a rocky start, but ultimately it worked. So I'll eat crow this time. Whatever Ross' reasons were for pulling Wesneski after 2, it worked out in the end.
  12. It feels good to be on the right side of this pixie dust for a change. What a stretch of games recently.
  13. The double play is going to get overshadowed, and understandably so, but that double play was spectacular and one that rarely gets turned.
  14. Only one more? He's a starter. Apparently Ross has fallen in love with the idea of an opener for Smyly, even when that opener is capable of going much longer.
  15. First order of trade business - Find a serviceable left-handed reliever not named Anthony Kay.
  16. I'm on board with getting him through 5 and getting him out of there, hopefully with a big enough lead for Kay and Rucker to eat some innings.
  17. Watching that video of the Cardinals broadcast, their reactions were equal parts satisfying and mystifying. I guess the argument was that Mikolas was doing things the "right way" by throwing below the belt and therefore should have only received a warning. So my question then would be, what if he missed a second time and then threw at the batter a third time? Is he still ok then? Can he continue intentionally throwing at batters until he finally hits one and gets warned for it? I may be a grumpy old baseball purist about a lot of things, but even I can recognize the idea of intentionally throwing at batters is silly.
  18. I think my favorite part was the Cubs players laughing in the dugout.
  19. I just turned the game on. Can someone explain what just happened?
  20. In the pitch clock era, these 3.5 hr games now feel like they are 5 hours long.
