  1. Prior is pitching a good game today, unfortunately Ramirez is pitching just a little bit better. Have faith though, Vazquez outpitched Carp until the end yesterday, so karma is in your favor.
  2. After Smoltz we face 3 lefties in a row, so Ronny should finally see some time. As much as he's sat, there's no excuse not to start him in all 3 games. After watching this season I have come to despise the concept of calling up rookies just to face lefties. Since when do you platoon your starting shortstop based on righty/lefty matchups? LF I can see, SS no. Injuries are the only reason Dusty still has his job.
  3. But what does he have to do with Taguchi, Mabry and Nunez being good this year? None of those guys should be this good off the bench, but they are. The only sorry bench players you've had has been Cedeno and Lankford. Nunez is just a great surprise. I truly think Tony just gives these guys a ton of playing time to keep their swing sharp. Both Taguchi and Mabry have been in prolonged slumps this year, but Tony lets them play themselves out of it.
  4. I think it's Tony. He has always had productive benches, mostly because he gets them a lot of work. I don't necessarily think Tony preaches patience to his hitters all the time. He definitely encourages pinch hitters to be aggressive and gets irritated when they get behind in the count taking too many pitches. Walt, with Tony's influence, brings in a good mix of guys. You have Edmonds and Sanders being big power, K guys. You have Pujols and Eckstein being contact, non-K guys. I think Albert being so consistently good over the last four 1/2 years has really anchored/stabilized the lineup. He's quietly been the team leader for years and he has high standards, but not in a prima donna way. No one on the team feels like they have to do too much and so everyone feels like they are playing a role in the offense. You hear a lot of players talk about their "role" with the offense. This is evidenced by the 4 AS position players (whether it's deserved or not). Don't ask me to explain Womack... JMO
  5. XZero, wow, that was arrogant! Both teams had it within their grasp, and while one team did it (with amazing odds I might add), one team did not.
  6. This luck factor is impossible for Cards fans to refute, so I won't bother. The schedule is out of our control (although Catman's point is a good one when you take having to play the Cards out of the mix of the heavy NL Central schedule). The fact that Morris gets run support is a part of how our team is constructed and I won't apologize for that either. Isolated run support is no reason to degrade a pitcher, especially if he doesn't need it. I can't think of one team who wouldn't take a pitcher as their one or two starter with a 3.17 ERA, 1.1 WHIP, 70 Ks, and 16 BBs. Ironically, the starter on our team in need of the most run support, Suppan, has received the lowest.
  7. For comparison's purposes, the AL has 9 teams out of 15 that are plus .500. The NL has 6 out of 16.
  8. Which brings up the next question, why is the NL so atrocious? And how is it even possible to have only six teams above .500 in a 16 team league? Attribute it to parity? That there's no really great teams and no really horrible teams?
  9. If we don't have Carp going against the Cubs that weekend, even if requires some juggling, we are idiots.
  10. Agree with the sentiments here, but now what are we going to do about Piazza behind the plate? Big liability! And right now I don't foresee Rolen and Eckstein helping out offensively. I wish M. Cabrera would have made the starting team; he would be another impact bat.
  11. Here are some quality examples of trolling from just tonight. I could go back every night of a Cardinals loss and find similar instances. http://forums.stltoday.com/viewtopic.php?t=266564 http://forums.stltoday.com/viewtopic.php?t=266539 http://forums.stltoday.com/viewtopic.php?t=266575 Unfortunately, unlike this board the moderators over there pay absolutely no attention to trolling and these guys won't get banned. And yes, I agree that is trolling...but bringing up that kind of argument in a thread because you don't like the fact that Cub fans are ripping on LaRussa is trolling....just a more subtle form of it. It's pushing the envelope knowing that it will "turn the dagger" so to speak. OK, so I get this straight, now we have to know not to bring Baker up in context (i.e. stupid remarks) for fear of rubbing the salt in Cubs fans wounds who don't like Baker?
  12. All I have to say is "Just Let Go"! It was refreshing when I did it to Lowell last week; haven't regretted it so far.
  13. Davies, Colon, Smoltz, Ramirez
  14. I guess this was a little too "trollish" for Vance.
  15. OK, now that we have human tendencies in common, the book is out. Cards can't hit lefties. Our only shutouts this year are against lefties. I don't know how we combat this problem, other than bat Nunez and replace one of our players that can't hit lefties (and there are a few).
  16. Apparently we are the recipients of some Cubs fans feeling cocky after the election of D. Lee to the All Star game. And our loss was different than the Cubs loss, how?
  17. But Kline was hacked off during the WS because he wasn't there even though he was healthy. That was a Jocketty/LaRussa call. They didn't offer him in the offseason and he was one of their best pitchers last year. He wanted to stay.
  18. Why would anyone expect he'd decline his all star bid? He even commented on it with great humility stating there are plenty of other 3rd basemen doing better than he is. I'm still waiting for Piazza to decline his, Scott might be having a down season, but he isn't going to hurt the team. Piazza on the other hand... When all votes are counted, I don't think Rolen will be voted in anyway.
  19. I conceded the whining. Not along the same lines...
  20. Tony might whine occasionally, but at least he makes some sort of sense, unlike his counterpart on the North Side. I challenge you to bring up one stupid comment made by LaRussa along the lines of Baker's affinity for African American players in the summer and walking clogs the bases.
  21. A little disingenuous, don't you think? Carp is 9-4 with a 3.13 ERA (not withstanding a 8 ER outing against Philly earlier). Zambrano is comparable. Regardless of what point in time I chose, Carpenter has been the best pitcher for the Cards so far which was my original point.
  22. Liking my pick right now, especially after Carpenter's 10 K, 1 hit performance tonight.
  23. Count me in as one who's changed my vote. Albert will win his share of accolades in due time. Lee's completely deserving and deserves the accolades at this point. He needs to be recognized for what looks to be shaking out as a stellar career year. I'm just hoping when he eventually lowers his .380 BA, it's against the Cards. He has single handedly carried the Cubs on offense this year, night in and night out.
