The fundamental problem with this team is not the bullpen, it's not lack of clutch hitting, it's not even the Bayloresque moves of Dusty the Dumbbutt. No, the over-riding problem with this club is the lack of a sense of urgency. And that starts with the manager. If you know you're not going to get benched regardless of how crappy you play, if you know you aren't going to hear about it for refusing to change your approach at the plate, if you know your manager operates under the "we'll get 'em tomorrow" philosophy it's easy to give away games like the one last night. As well as this club has played since the break (8-5), its record should really be 11-2. There was no excuse for dropping a game at home to Pittsburgh, coughing up a four-run lead to Cincy and hacking for the fences with a 20-mph wind blowing in your faces against a junkball no-name slapdick from San Francisco. Give Houston this schedule and they're 11-2 right now. They play with a sense of urgency. This team doesn't. And that failing lies entirely at Dusty Baker's feet.
