  1. I didn't think of this, and somebody else mentioned it on another thread, but they could also put Guzman on the 60-day DL to free up a 40-man spot. My guess now is that is what they'll do.
  2. Hairston finished one game at shorstop earlier this year. Macias is a waste of a roster space and a disgrace to the uniform.
  3. Hadn't even thought of that. Which means it makes perfect sense.
  4. Somebody's got to get DFA'd sooner or later because there are 39 guys on the 40 man right now and Williamson and Nomar are almost ready to come off the 60-day DL. It should be Macias but it'll probably be Grieve, with Cedeno and Mitre going to Des Moines.
  5. After watching Felipe Alou's Keystone Kops moves with his bullpen last night they shouldn't be laughing too much.
  6. Don't blame the players for the ridiculous roster management of the manager. Statistically, I think Hollandsworth is the best pinch hitter on the roster. Neifi would be an ideal utility infielder and pinch-hitter. The only guy on the roster who shouldn't be there at all is Macais. Perez does everything Macias does and does it better.
  7. Dempster- Closer Wood- Set-up Williamson- Set-up Wuertz-situational Ohman-situational Rusch-situational, spot starter Remlinger- Mop-up, long relief That looks like a bullpen you could go to war with. Run Wood out there to throw gas for one inning then bring in Dempster and his sinker and the 8th and 9th look pretty good for the Cubs. The key is that Wood never throws more than one inning and Dusty doesn't use him every damn day. If they manage it right this could be the best bullpen in the league by the end of the year.
  8. I make fun of the guy because he looks like he's 12, but I'd guess David Eckstein was never a Top 100 or Top 10 prospect. Ranking minor league prospects is like ranking football recruiting classes in February. More often than not, the guys who wind up stars are the guys nobody thought much of when the rankings come out.
  9. As long as they're ahead of the Cubs in the standings the Cubs are chasing them. Just because they're slumping now doesn't necessarily mean they can't right themselves and go on another hot streak. The Cubs themselves are proof of that; they've had a couple of bad stretches this year and managed to rebound. Washington's done. I'll stand by that.
  10. The idiotic thing about the Hollandsworth situation is that if Hendry sacked up and told Baker to start Murton no matter what it would actually improve two spots on the roster. 1. We'd have a legitimate hitter playing left field. 2. Macias would no longer be the first left-handed PH off the bench.
  11. When Nomar and Williamson both come back not only will two guys have to go to Iowa but somebody will have to get DFA'd since there are 39 guys on the 40-man right now. The smart thing to do would be to release Macias like yesterday but my guess is that Cedeno and Mitre go to DM and Grieve gets released. Assuming Kerry comes back at some point before September I'd guess Novoa would get sent down to make room for him.
  12. With Mitre, Hill and Rusch already here, I doubt it.
  13. They've stayed in the hunt without him. Mitre, Rusch and Hill can fill in well enough.
  14. The fact that the Cardinals may be considering replacing Rolen for the remainder of the year is kinda interesting. Smacks of a bit of panic on the Cards' part if true.
  15. They're not? =; http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/standings?type=wild&br=5&year=2005&column=gamesBehind&order=false&st=2 Don't care what the standings say. The Nats are crashing and burning. The Cubs don't need to chase them. They just need to step aside so they don't get hit on the head as Washington free falls down the standings. Houston and the Cubs will decide the wild card. They're in better shape than NY, Philly and Florida.
  16. 7-4 and should be 9-2.
  17. I'd rather not see Hawkins in a save situation.
  18. "Kerry's Frayed Labrum" would be a good screen name.
  19. Based on what Hendry and Baker are saying in print, I don't think average is as important as approach at this point. If they sent him down to work on some things and tinker with his swing his average is going to look pretty bad for awhile but if he's doing what they want him to do that's ok.
  20. The Cubs aren't chasing the Nationals. They're chasing the Phillies, who are only a game and a half ahead. And the team to beat is actually Houston, who is only a game ahead and has to play the Cubs 10 times down the stretch. The wildcard team is coming out of the Central this year.
  21. The Cubs do not have a favorable schedule the rest of the way. IIRC, 60% of the games they have left are against teams with over a .500 w/l record including 14 more games against St. Louis and several more against Houston. The Cubs have 11 games remaining with St. Louis but eight are in Chicago. Rolen's hurt, Walker's hurt and something's wrong with Pujols. They have 10 left with Houston, seven are at the Little League park in Houston. Playoff caliber ballclubs beat these teams in must-win situations. If the Cubs can't do that they don't deserve to be in the postseason anyway.
  22. How about DFA Remlinger and bring up Aardsma?
  23. The problem wasn't that he was missing inside. The problem was he was trying to go inside with an 88 mph heater.
