  1. Torres. He filled in last year when Gonzo went down, which gave us the confidence to trade Gonzo to get LaRoche.
  2. You could start rooting for the Pirates. Our management never does anything stupid. ](*,) #-o
  3. http://pittsburgh.pirates.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070323&content_id=1855900&vkey=spt2007news&fext=.jsp&c_id=pit He was a guy that we lost in the Rule 5 draft in (I think) '03. We got him back, basically, through the Benson Trade (The Mets traded Huber to the Royals to get him, then included him with Wigginton and some Pitcher for Benson & Kippenger.) I didn't see this coming. I thought they were using him as a way to get Castillo to come into camp in shape, which he did. So, Freddy moves to Second. (I think they were going to play him there anyway!) Castillo has been a disappointment for us. He's supposed to be a guy with a great glove and good bat worth 25 HRs. But, last year was just an all around disaster for him.
  4. He wants a rematch against Snell.
  5. He was an enigma here. He had that great year, I think it was '03? 6th best ERA in the NL. We thought he was going to be a Staff Ace for years to come. Then the broken finger in '04. Yeah, he pitched the whole year, but.. I forget waht '05 was. Some other injury. Then, last year with the blood clot thing. I hope he makes it. I doubt he will.
  6. It's early spring training. Who cares.
  7. If Benson didn't get hurt in '03, you guys never would have gotten Aramis.
  8. I don't remember "cutting" Bobby Hill. Jake is a Pirates fan. But, the Pirates didn't cut him either. They traded him to the Padres. He was traded after we DFA'd him. Technically that's a cut. :-) Did you get something for him? If so, technically, that's not a cut. Define something. :-)

  10. Wow! Four pages on Bobby Hill! A guy we cut! Go figure!
  11. Hey Jake, scored tickets to a Red Sox/Pirates game in Bradenton on my next business trip. Should be fun to see baseball and catch the Pirates first hand. Just thought I would rub it in ;) I'm Jealous. One year I'll have to make it down there!
  12. Compared to Gil Meche, this is a Steal!
  13. He's coming to the Pirates. The LaRoche trade convinced him.
  14. Initial platoon at first against lefties.
  15. If that's your lineup, your manager should be sent to the firing line. I didn't realize you guys had a Dusty Disciple filling out your lineup card. Duffy, Paulino, Freddy, LaRoche, Bay, Nady for the first six with the pitcher, Wilson, and Castillo sharing the final three slots in any order makes alot more sense IMO. Wilson has a career OBP of .306, and should be a #8 hitter on most teams, maybe #7 on some. There's no excuse for him to ever sniff the number two spot on any team. Agree, mostly. Remember, these are the same people who thought Freddy was a utility player (Check out how he did in '05 once he became an every day player.) My lineup would be Duffy, Freddy, Laroche, Bay, Nady, Paulino, bautista, Jack.
  16. He'll come back to Pittsburgh to break the record where his career started. The 'Roids should keep him going through '09, too.
  17. That, indeed, is the big question for us. We're set with our first four starters for now: Ian Snell had a good year, to be sure. Zach Duke started off shaky but came on strong towards the end of the year. Tom Gorzelany came up mid season and looked good, let's see how he does. Paul Mahalom was shaky all season after a decent showing at the end of '05. Contenders for the 5th spot: Shawn Chacon would seem to be in the lead. Still not sure he'll go North with us, though. There are the three hurtin' former phenoms: Sean Burnett, Bryan Bullington John VanBenshoten. Burnett has a very legit shot to make it, VanB might be pitching long relief and could be the Sixth Starter. Bullington's not quite ready yet, but may very well be starting for us later in the year. Shane Youman, who, if he doesn't make the rotation, could be in the 'Pen. I think there's one or two others I'm not thinking of.
  18. For us, we badly needed a left handed power hitter. We have exactly 0 people that can fill that roll on the major leage level. Our strength was our bullpen. Yes, we gave up a lot for him in Gonzo and Lillibridge. But, in the 'Pen we have Sol Torres who can close, and John Grabow and Matt Capps who will set up. That set up will get us wins most of the time we head into the 7th leading. Oh yeah - Can't forget Damaso Marte. That's not a bad foursome. The real pain for us was in giving up Lillibridge. Lot of potential in that guy. We got a guy who's an excellent defender and was 10th in the NL in OPS last season, for a reliever. I don't want to make lite of Gonao at all - big shoes to fill. But, if we can't take the lead in the first place, there's nothing to save. Check out: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07018/754774-63.stm Our lineup now looks like: Duffy, Wilson, Freddy, LaRoche, Bay, Nady, Paulino, Castillo. Bautista will push Castillo for playing time. I like our team a lot more today than I did yesterday. A Lot more. If this team doesn't win more than it loses, Tracey should be fired.
  19. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/unfiltered/?p=155 Nate Silver thinks the Braves definitely got the better end of the deal. So do I. But, we needed to do it, and we dealt from a position of strength. I think Lillibridge was a lot to give up. OTOH, this makes us competitive this year. With our pitching a year older, we're going to surprise some folks.
  20. It's Lillibridge going, Jamie Romack coming. No idea about Romack. Lillibridge was someone we're high on, but he still had a ways to go to get here. Wow. I don't believe this.
  21. Fox Sports reporting a minor league infielder. Probably Bixler or Lilliebridge. Someone coming our way. No idea who.
  22. In my trade scenario, you could add J.Jones to Laroche, Bay, Nady and Paulino to drive him in. That's a pretty decent lineup and with your young pitching, you could surprise some teams this year and be contenders very soon. No need to be cruel, Jake is a pretty nice guy. :-) Actually, I could write a realistic if list of things that could happen for us to win it this year. Of course, you can apply my standard reply to those lists in other threads, most notably to Tim in some other thread (I forget where I wrote it) to this list, too.
  23. If the queen had balls, she'd be the king.
  24. I think this is our best odds in a decade!
