  1. What's really bothering me about this trade right now is Matt Weiters.
  2. Ooh. I can see it now. Game 7 of the NL Championship Series, Cubs Vs. Padres. 2 out, bottom of the ninth, man on first, Cubs up by one. Borowski or Hawkins on the mound. (Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story...) (Let's also make the man on first Giles, just for a more dramatice effect.) Mack-O-Whack steps up to the plate. Game over. The right hand up in the air as he circles the bases, greeted by former buccos teammate Giles, saying "If only we could have put it together in Pittsburgh. I'm not sure if this story tortures you guys more, or me. :-)
  3. Next year. The formwer winner was Brian Giles. I'd rather have Giles in his prime for what we're paying Morris than Morris in his prime for what we paid Giles.
  4. Something like this, I would guess: http://img451.imageshack.us/img451/9448/17561070hk3.gif Keep in mind, Morris was miserable in SF. It's not like he went from first to last. Based on what I've been reading today and yesterday, it seems that, other than Bonds' HR chase, there's less to watch the Giants for than the Pirates! (And, that says a LOT!)
  5. Ouch Someone forget to tell them Izturis is a Free Agent? They could pick up his option for next year. It would be extremely stupid to do, but it's the Pirates. The Wilson to Detroit thing is not dead yet, more than likely to happen post waivers. Which is unfortunate, I think. Keep in mind that Bay & LaRoche are up for some big raises next year. As is Freddy. I'm not sure about Nady. Whether the Pirates pick up Izturis' option is a thing of timing. We're supposed to get a new president by the end of the season. I suspec the new Pres will fire both littlefield and tracy and bring in his own people. littlefield would pick up the option, A new guy probably won't, who ever it is.
  6. http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070731&content_id=2119840&vkey=news_stl&fext=.jsp&c_id=stl If you really wanted him, and you couldn't beat a deal of Rajai Davis and a PTBNL (probably nothing good), then it's your own fault, Walt. I think the issue wasn't what was offered, but that the 'Rats piclked up his whole salary. I'm still surprised by this trade.
  7. Took the words right out of my mouth! Jake, whats going on over there? This one comepletely caught me off guard. We've been trying to get an established starter for a couple of years now. I don't think Davis was a lot to give up. Hit well in the minors, never much in the majors. Defense can be suspect. Plus, we have three other guys like him. Let's see who the PTBNL is. (No, it's not Duke) EDIT: Just read we took his whole salary on! BTW, We have armas back in the rotation. This is surely an upgrade. Goerzo is hurting a bit, so this allows us to skip him once or twice. And, he's signed through next year. More later.
  8. Not even worth responding to. EDIT: Actually, I'll respond. The player is going to be someone who's not on the 40 man. So, that rules out Duke. Although, the way Duke has pitched this season...
  9. OK. First, this ate a post of mine, then it put my last post out of order? Script issues? Or, is this the whole world being out of order and, once today's trade is nullified, everything will be back to normal?
  10. I think he meant played (past tense), which he was. Your friend needs to grow a brain. All-Star when he plays for Tracy?? LOL, that's rich. Is Izturis going to propel the Pirates to that 2nd place finish you were speaking of Jake? Or are all bets off now? Wow. This thing totally what I wrote. I was saying about how Itzy was an allstar with the Dodgers when Tracy managed him. I was saying third, not second. This wasn't a commentary about how good our team is, but a commentary about how bad the NL central is. I still think we can finish higher than the Reds, 'Stros and Cards. But, that's not saying much. I don't think Itzy figures in that one way or the other. Still a real possibility. The Cards started Kip Wells out of the all-star break.

  12. Better than the Aram trade? Wow. I've never seen such euphoria for a addition by subtraction trade.
  13. Not for long. New CEO coming in in the fall. I expect (pray for?) wholesale changes. If I recall, in fact, it was during the recent Cubs' series at Pittsburgh (right before the break) that he announced he was stepping down. That was McClatchey, who headed the group that bought the team. Up until January, McClathcye had been the principle partner. At the time of the purchase, he was the majority shareholder. But, as limited partners sold, the Nutting Family of WV bought them out, gaining the majority in (I think) 2003. Bob Nutting has been Chairman of the board since then, while McClatchey has been the public face. Nutting took over as Principle owner this past offseason, leaving McClatchey as CEO. McClatchye is dropping out of the picture altogether now. No idea if he's selling. I can't imagine anyone coming in as CEO and not making wholesale changes, though.

  15. Maybe they are considering that, if they're trying to trade Jack Wilson.I'm guessing we're trying to trade Wilson. He's been in a few animated conversations in the dugout during games lately. And, he's due 7.0 Million. There's also the Jim Tracy connection. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07200/802873-100.stm I'm of two minds about this. One why him? He hasn't done much in the past couple of years. OTOH, our current back up infielders have no business being in the major leagues. Both have been DFA'd this year. How much worse can Izty be?
  16. ARGH!!!! #*&@#*($&@#*($&@#*$& DOUBLE ARGH @#*($&@#*($&@#*($&@#$ And, a few words I'm not allowed to type here.
  17. That's just cold. I think the team has quit.
  18. You jinxed them Jake... 9 games behind the Cubs in the loss column, 12 behind the Brewers. I did, din't I. Wow. Big Ben & Co report to camp in a week.
  19. Wow! Such hand wringing and teeth gnashing, and I only got to page 6! I didn't read the other 29 pages inbetween, so I'm most likely going to post what other people said. I think, at worst, this trade is almost a non-issue. First, I don't think his salary is an issue. Yeah, he's making 13 mil, but the Pirates are picking up 5.5 of it and the seasons > 1/2 over. And, Oakland threw in some cash. And, this is the final year of the contract, so there's no long term commitment. You gave up a DFA'd catcher and a low minor league reliever, someone who was projected as a specialist? In other words, you gave up a guy you had given up on anyway, and a potential bit contributor for an experienced catcher. OK, So, Kendall can't hit anymore. He usually comes on strong in the second 1/2, so, maybe he'll hit .250 for you guys if your lucky. And his defense? Not great either. But, he'll call a better game than either Soto or Hill. With the offense you guys have, the game calling alone could be enough to put you over the top. Or not. I don't think you guys hurt yourself long term, and I don't think you made the team worse. And, the potential is there to have made your team better. Not earth shattering, but a good trade, I think.
  20. No way. If he was having 'roid rage, he'd have bitten off Paulino's head, chewed it up, and spat it down his neck long ago.
  21. Yeah, but they're still the Pirates. not to single you out on this, but this is my number one pet peeve with cub fans. over the past couple seasons, i've heard, "yeah, but they're still the pirates," "yeah, but they're still the brewers," and "yeah, but they're still the reds," etc. well, you know what, we're still the cubs. and the cubs have sucked just as hard, if not harder, than any team in the division over the past 20 years or whatever. cub fans have this odd sense of entitlement like "don't worry the brewers will choke it away." have you not watched the cubs choked away the last three seasons (and probably 20+ out of the last 25 seasons)?? honestly, reading some of the posts on here, you'd think the cubs were the braves or the new england patriots or something. And oh the consternation when a pirates or reds or brewers pitcher beats us...Cy Snell! Cy Arroyo! Cy Suppan! Actually, I was talking about Cy Snell before we beat you. :-) Ironically, Both Arroyo & Supan have worn the black and gold.
  22. Keep something in mind folks. We're only 4.5 games behind you. And, we're starting to click. Two major differences going forward: LaRoche is starting to hit, Mahalom is starting to pitch. Also, our bullpen is melting down a lot less often. We're still a long shot. But, we're not going quietly into that Night, er, I mean abyss that's the NL Central basement. Actually, we're not going there at all. I could see us finishing second or third. Will be an interesting second 1/2! Oh Yeah - Freddy is starting to heat up, too. And, he's getting the knack of playing second!
