    BA had Martinez at #18 in MLB in their mid season update. Consensus seems to be that he has better raw stuff and upside than Miller but there are concerns about his frame and he's not as polished. I didn't read that other guy's post, but saying that Martinez is on Miller's level as a prospect isn't really a stretch. With the second half he had, I'd be shocked if anybody had Carlos Martinez anywhere near that high in their offseason lists. Miller is a much better prospect, without a doubt.

    Kouzmanoff is a free agent unless the lists out there are wrong. It's entirely possible. I have been known to drink too much.

    Stewart is a definite non-tender candidate. I doubt the Rockies decide to carry both him and Kevin Kouzmanoff, so one or the other is likely gone through some means. But for the record, I don't really want Stewart. It's rare that you'll hear me say this, so pay attention... he strikes out too much. Of course, my position is subject to change if the front office actually acquires him, as I'll assume they see something they think they can fix. Having a competent front office is really messing with my ability to simply declare things "good" or "bad."

    I'm expecting our bench to be significantly better than it was last season, FWIW. Tyler Colvin isn't exactly the best 4th OF in baseball, but he's not going to put up a .510 OPS again either. Koyie Hill will be replaced by Castillo or Clevenger but even if he isn't, even Koyie Hill isn't as bad as he was last year. Tony Campana was better than his numbers would indicate. Baker can do much better if whoever is managing doesn't try to make him hit righties. The only performance we're likely to miss is Reed Johnson.

    That or we're making one hell of a run at the #1 pick. Can you imagine this lineup without Aramis and without either of those guys? I wasn't just talking from the perspective that we need one of them, but just pointing out when you have this much money to spend in free agency and you know you're not spending it on 3B, well.... how many other places can you spend it?

    It probably goes without saying, but with Theo basically writing off Aramis returning next year it increases the chances of getting a Pujols or Fielder.

    Presser is over. Highlights: Aramis is almost certainly gone. Quade is likely gone, final decision within the week. Carlos Zambrano decision is more uncertain, Theo wants to talk to Z first. Have until the end of the day today to finish compensation with Red Sox. If not finished, Selig can take over the process or extend the deadline.] Oh, and that racist shitbrick Kaplan was grinning ear to ear when talking about Aramis being gone.

    It was Aramis, not Zambrano. Theo basically said he'd like to have him back but wont be offering him the sort of contract he's likely to get elsewhere.

    Apparently the Brackman deal was structured so that if the Yankees turned down any options they had to release him. That's absolutely bonkers. I'd kick the tires. He's still got some potential.

    For this arguement, you have to assume that the other guys will be enough of a defensive upgrade to make up for the offense. We know that DeWitts defense isn't much better than Aramis. I don't know too much about LeMa or Flaherty on defense, and Bakers offense is surely not enough. On what are you basing your premise that DeWitt is not much better on defense than Aramis? UZR? Because he's only got about 17 games worth of innings at 3B over the last three years. In the ~80 games he logged there in 2008 he was ranked quite well. In addition, he was also considered a pretty slick defensive 3B on his way up the ladder with the Dodgers.

    Starting him is probably a mistake. He stuff has been playing way up in relief, while he was very hittable as a starter.

    For one year of Johan Santana, the Twins got jack diddly. Felix has a better contract status, but I have a hard time seeing it be Starlin Castro better.
