  1. I love the front office overhaul. Although it's kinda scary to me that we can add so many people in and not have to fire anybody (sans Hendry, I guess). I suppose that just goes to show how tiny our front office really was before all this.
  2. You know how sometimes I post a bunch of luck-neutral batting lines for misc. players? Yeah, I did it again
  3. Ramon Ortiz. Miguel Batista I think this speaks more to the fact I need to get a life more than anything, but I could probably name 99%+ of the rosters of each MLB team off the top of my head. Therefore, I am not surprised to see anyone's name. That said, I always feel like Darren Oliver should be retired when I see his name, though he's still fairly good (but not when he really needs to be... :x ). I don't know that I could do the 25 man from each team, but I could probably name 25 players in each system (including majors).
  4. The Red Sox actually went into spring training one year intending to convert Papelbon from closer to a starter. He decided he preferred closing. That killed the experiment pretty quickly.
  5. Did my entry tonight. I left one entry conspicuously blank, and that'll hurt my chances of winning the contest. But I'm not jinxing anything if I can avoid it. Also left Javier Vazquez blank. I assume that'll count for a win if he retires?
  6. That was pretty neat.
  7. Sooo... No articles telling us Theo was on the phone with Pujols at 12:01 EST last night? I'm kinda disappointed.
  8. Ran into John Cleese a few years back in the Phoenix airport. I feel sorry for tall celebrities... there was nothing he could do not to get noticed (and summarily mobbed).
  9. Also, he went a bit overboard with the plucking.
  10. Throwing Dempster 120 pitches and 6+ innings regardless of effectiveness .
  11. Epstein is gonna get Earl Weaver and I'm gonna be all "is that all? I thought you could do better." And it'll be awesome.
  12. If the Rays trade Upton it's a near certainty that Jennings will slide over to CF.
  13. Didn't Dusty Baker always talk about Cliff Floyd becoming a manager one day, even letting him manage a couple meaningless games at the end of seasons? I wonder what he's up to.
  14. Mostly because the sample sizes are small enough that I don't put too much stock into them, instead opting to use my personal opinions based off what I've seen (which is a whole separate can of worms, I am certainly aware). If I'm not mistaken, before last season's disaster by Stewart wasn't he a reverse platoon splits guy too?
  15. Do you think, if he gets non-tendered, that there's a better bang for your buck (and I think that's the best approach to take with 3B, since there isn't much out there in terms of that position) candidate than him? It likely depends on the ultimate goal of the organization and how far we feel we are from playoff contention. If Theo pulls off some magic and we look like we're in the drivers seat for a playoff spot, I'd much rather go with DeWitt/Baker at 3B. There's much less chance of an implosion. If we feel we're a game or two out, I might go with Kevin Kouzmanoff or Alberto Callaspo (depending on if the Angels are willing to move him. Looked like they would before the GM switch). They offer a bit higher upside that might be what it takes to get us over the top. If we are way out of this thing, Stewart becomes a more attractive option just to see if he cant put it all together. For the record, I would love to have Stewart in AAA working on his approach. But giving him a starting job to begin the season is a scary proposition.
  16. Qualifying players who ended the season with a strikeout rate higher than Stewart's career 27.9% 2011: Mark Reynolds, Drew Stubbs 2010: Mark Reynolds, Adam Dunn, Drew Stubbs, Adam LaRoche 2009: Mark Reynolds, Jack Cust, Russell Branyan, Carlos Pena 2008: Mark Reynolds, Jack Cust, Ryan Howard, Mike Cameron 2007: Jack Cust, Ryan Howard, BJ Upton Is it possible to be a productive player with that many strikeouts? Yeah. But it's not easy.
  17. The repeated cuckolding incidents tells you what Sandberg's teammates really thought of him.
  18. Isn't that reason enough?
  19. BA had Martinez at #18 in MLB in their mid season update. Consensus seems to be that he has better raw stuff and upside than Miller but there are concerns about his frame and he's not as polished. I didn't read that other guy's post, but saying that Martinez is on Miller's level as a prospect isn't really a stretch. With the second half he had, I'd be shocked if anybody had Carlos Martinez anywhere near that high in their offseason lists. Miller is a much better prospect, without a doubt.
  20. Kouzmanoff is a free agent unless the lists out there are wrong. It's entirely possible. I have been known to drink too much.
  21. Stewart is a definite non-tender candidate. I doubt the Rockies decide to carry both him and Kevin Kouzmanoff, so one or the other is likely gone through some means. But for the record, I don't really want Stewart. It's rare that you'll hear me say this, so pay attention... he strikes out too much. Of course, my position is subject to change if the front office actually acquires him, as I'll assume they see something they think they can fix. Having a competent front office is really messing with my ability to simply declare things "good" or "bad."
  22. I'm expecting our bench to be significantly better than it was last season, FWIW. Tyler Colvin isn't exactly the best 4th OF in baseball, but he's not going to put up a .510 OPS again either. Koyie Hill will be replaced by Castillo or Clevenger but even if he isn't, even Koyie Hill isn't as bad as he was last year. Tony Campana was better than his numbers would indicate. Baker can do much better if whoever is managing doesn't try to make him hit righties. The only performance we're likely to miss is Reed Johnson.
  23. That or we're making one hell of a run at the #1 pick. Can you imagine this lineup without Aramis and without either of those guys? I wasn't just talking from the perspective that we need one of them, but just pointing out when you have this much money to spend in free agency and you know you're not spending it on 3B, well.... how many other places can you spend it?
