Off topic, but people in this thread were wondering about Hollandsworth's shaved dome. Apparently it's a solidarity thing with his sister-in-law who has cancer.
Most of Ichiro's peripherals were relatively intact last year. His BABIP was 50 points below his career average which made for most of the difference on offense. What's worrying to me is that this is the first year that his defense wasn't generally well regarded. Most metrics have him average to below-average. Without having seen him much this year, I can't say for certain what the cause is. Losing a step would account for the defensive woes and the dropoff from his ridiculously high career BABIP. Or it could just be that standard BABIP "bad luck" and a bit of noise in the defensive metrics. Trading for him this season probably isn't a good idea (for reasons both related and unrelated to his performance). But if this season lines up well with his career norms, it might not be the worst thing in the world to go after him as a stopgap for 2013. Best to wait and see.
Theo wrote an article for the Boston Globe detailing a bit of what went into his decision to come here. http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2011/10/25/farewell_red_sox_nation/
What? You had multiple people here suggesting her as a viable and appealing option before the whole Theo thing blew up. Yeah, she wasn't the top choice for most of us, but she definitely fell into that group of perfectly acceptable options after Theo, Friedman, etc...
Isn't Samardzija a FA this offseason? Or do the Cubs control him and have to go through arbitration? He's not a FA. We've got some options on his contract, but if we decline them he's not even arb eligible yet.
SoSH seems to be mostly convinced Selig is going to have this compensation mess go to arbitration, where getting Garza or a Jackson/McNutt package would be a pretty reasonable conclusion. I, on the other hand, think SoSH is high. All of them. They done smoked themselves stupid.
I doubt it happens, but it would be great to wake up with Heather Graham in my bed tomorrow. Really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really really, great.
The man deserves his own thread. He's a fantastic addition to the staff and represents a vast improvement over Jim Hendry. I'll be interested to see what (if anything) we gave up. Can't believe how quickly and quietly negotiations with San Diego have apparently gone.
I propose that all of NSBB forgive Kaplan's first instance of overt racism after this deal comes to pass, in honor of his shockingly excellent reporting so far.
