  1. Bah! Where's your sense of archaic "knowledge"? Throw logic to the wind and revel in the glory that was Neifury!
  2. The Cubs' record going into August 20th was 53-69, for a lackluster .434 winning percentage. That was the fateful day our beloved Neifi was traded. Since that point, the Cubs have gone 2-14 for a horrendous .125 winning percentage. Coincidence?
  3. whats wrong with keeping pierre? with his resurgence he can be a .750 (he's already at .727 even with his horrible first few months) ops guy next year. he plays great defense (aside from the noodle arm) and will have 50 steals this year. i dont see any way that they dont try to resign him. i believe the cubs have already said that they see pie as a #5 or 6 hitter anyway rather than a leadoff guy (i think it was oneri?). i think he will be switched to rf in iowa next year. if he takes off in 07 in aaa, they can always trade jones & bring pie up. Keeping Pierre in CF and putting Pie in RF are both disastrous ideas for an already poor offense. i disagree That's a great point. Even if you want to pretend Pierre is on of the best CFs in the league... Pie in RF would be below-average. His offense is much more palatable as a CF than a RF. Surely we both can agree offense is extremely important for a RF, and Pie is no Bobby Abreu even.
  4. Except for Kenny Lofton. And Mark Grudzelaniek. And the 04 version of CPatt. And Todd Walker. Beat ya to it. :P
  5. Except for Kenny Lofton. And Mark Grudzelaniek. And the 04 version of CPatt. And Mark Bellhorn (2002). And Eric Young (2000) And Lenny Harris(2003) Bwhahaha. In all seriousness he is about the 5th best this decade and we are in its 6th year. A real keeper. Lenny Harris only hit .111/.111/.111 out of the leadoff spot in 2003. Todd Walker hit .294/.370/.535 in 228 AB out of the leadoff spot in 2004, though.

  7. Personally, my vote would go to Beltran or Cabrera... similar stats at harder defensive positions... much moreso with Beltran. At any rate, Ryan Howard sure is looking like I got a steal... drafting him in the 14th round of our fantasy league.
  8. That's how I feel-if Pierre was the worst problem, we'd have a pretty good team-hopefully we don't re-sign him for big money, but there's other areas that need to be fixed first. The problem is, if he re-signs, it will be for big money. And that money then cannot be used to fix the myriad of other problems we've got. Is he our biggest problem? No. Can he keep us from solving the big ones? Yes.

  10. CERA is considered to be nothing more than a junk stat. I know that. And it's primarily considered a junk stat because there's practically no evidence that a catcher's game calling has any impact on pitching success. (For instance, last year the situation I describe above was reversed. Blanco had a much better CERA than Barrett.) Since the autocorrelation of the stat is lousy (at best), it's considered to be a junk stat. However, if Barrett's game calling was indeed hurting our pitching staff's success, as the original post posits, then Barrett's CERA would be consistently higher than Blanco's. Which it isn't. So I'm saying there's no real evidence that Barrett's game calling or defense hurts our pitching. And his offense certainly helps when compared to Blanco's or just about any other NL catcher. Don't get me wrong, I love Barrett. Having Barrett behind the plate instead of a guy like A.J. Pierzynski is like having Bill Hall instead of Yuniesky Betancourt. It should be a no-brainer.
  11. I can't figure out for the life of me why we let Williams slip away for nothing... and why we picked up yet another live arm for Nevin instead of a position prospect, which our farm system would be sorely in need of. Hendry needs to go.
  12. CERA is considered to be nothing more than a junk stat.
  13. Only Harben I know of is Adam Harben... of the Twins. Stats!
  14. Perhaps not, but I'd certainly expect a sub 5 ERA from our newly dubbed #3 starter, and Meche can't be even close to a guarantee for that. Let's lay out his abilities here, shall we? His strikeout rate comes in around 40% of the league average. His walk rate at around 20%. And to top it all off, his GB/FB ratio is pretty weak. He could be perfectly serviceable in a sizeable ballpark with a decent defense... but a high walk rate at Wrigley field? All his flyballs would be zooming right out of the park. Wrigley needs groundball pitchers, or at least pitchers that don't have high walk rates. Meche isn't either of those things.
  15. If Gil Meche is considered an integral part of the rotation, we aren't competing.
  16. I know you're being sarcastic, but Christ, who didn't besides Aramis? Pagan had an absolutely stellar one. Dopirak's was pretty darn good too, IIRC.
  17. Am I the only one still on the Fredi Gonzalez BandWGN? After him, I'd be all about Girardi though. Oh, and a quick question... does anybody know what Earl Weaver is up to these days?
  18. Somebody sure is reaching for something to pad the resume...
  19. That's assuming we actually got replacement level production in his place. And since the primary beneficiary of the injury was Neifi, with Walker moving over to first base... it's quite possible we didn't get replacement level production from either position. While I haven't looked at the numbers yet, I'd be quite surprised if the tandem proved to be above replacement level as a whole.
  20. If we're listing Jeter, why aren't we paying any attention to Tejada? His stats are almost exactly the same... a little lighter on the OBP and AVG, but a good deal higher on SLG. And for that matter Carlos Guillen has numbers that are just about the same. I'm sorry, but I don't believe there's any way Hafner doesn't deserve the award this year... and if it's not him, it's Manny or Mauer.
  21. Why are we adding guys like Walrond and O'Malley to the 40 man? I swear, if we get raped in the Rule V again, I'm gonna be livid. These guys better get DFA'd after the season.
  22. I was just about to point that out.
  23. This season was secured for Webb when the DBacks acquired Orlando Hudson. The day that happened, Webb jumped to the top of my pitching draft chart.
  24. It's so depressing that this didn't shock me into a sense of outrage and disbelief...
