    I believe people are suggesting Rich Hill has been better than Z since the middle of last season. There are causes for concern for Z though - his back, his weight, his BBs. Since August 1: Rich Hill: 83.2 IP, 2.47 ERA, 84 K/21 BB, 0.91 WHIP, 11 HR Carlos Zambrano: 78 IP, 4.62 ERA, 68 K/44 BB, 1.47 WHIP, 8 HR Carlos has better stuff and has a much longer and better history but Hill obviously has been much, much better over the last half season. 4:1 strikeout ratios are great. 3:2 not so much.

    Well, it's possible DeRosa will be back, unless there was something I didn't hear tonight. I dunno, he looked like he was in a lot of pain in his lone AB tonight. Yeah, I'm not convinced he's in any shape to play. I'd hope we have the good sense to send Cedeno down for a bit and bring up Scott Moore for the next week or so.

    It's not Soriano's fault Jim Hendry shoved an ill-advised contract for $136 mil under his nose. You or I would sign it just as fast as he did. The problem lies with Jim Hendry and his inability to distinguish an excellent ballplayer from a career year... or indeed, even his inability to distinguish an excellent ballplayer from Juan Pierre or Jacque Jones. Seeing as how it is Jim Hendry's job to put a product in front of the paying fans that they want to see, he would be unable to do so without knowing what the fans want. Booing is simply a conduit for expressing your displeasure with the team or a particular player. It is certainly not the most effective way to express an opinion, but I certainly don't begrudge anyone for it.

    I'd have to assume if Cedeno went down there, Barrett would move back out to third (where he used to play) and Blanco would go behind the plate.

    This is just like the Cubs. Come out and get everybody excited... blow it all in miserable fashion... but show just enough promise weasling out of it that the fans are still excited over the prospects of the team.

    Pretty much. The Castro hit seemed like it happened because Izturis was out of position a bit... then the Soriano - Cedeno semi-colision in CF that allowed Moeller to get on. That's about when he seemed to lose it.

    ? blue equates theriot to neifi ;) Only in that he gets to play any position over players who are better than him, and he gets played constantly just because he's the new manager's favorite for whatever reason. I understand that he's in for Aram today, so whatever, but I don't want to see him playing LF or RF ever. We already have 4 outfielders. You will be sorely disappointed then, I'm afraid. Lou seems to have decided Theriot is the best player on his bench, no matter where he plays.

    Just so that we all feel better about this lineup, we all need to remember that we have Jacque, Soriano, and Floyd in the outfield... not Bynum, Pierre, and Pagan. Side note: Z smoked that.

    Um... This is absolutely correct, but I don't see how it helps Banedon's argument. He said that benching a guy for not running out a popup is fine if it is done early in the season, but maybe a bad idea if done later in the season. If you start factoring in the idea that benching one guy will improve the production rate of several players rather than just one, the value gained from benching Encarnacion increases. Let's put it in terms of team run production rates. Since team production rates get multipled by lots more PAs than individual rates, the amount of games needed to balance out the loss from benching Encarnacion would be smaller. The smaller the number of games needed to balance out the benching, the less sense Banedon's argument makes. I wasn't helping Banedon's argument. I was helping yours.

    I don't get it. Victories aren't less important early in the season. So, what's the difference? Maybe that the marginal increase in run production rate exceeds the fixed loss from benching him only when multiplied over a very large number of games? But if the lesson is going to stick with him all season, isn't it reasonable to think it will stick for much longer...for as long as he's under Narron, at least? You cant only assume marginal production from him. This most likely wasn't meant as a message only to him, but all the young players on the team. That's also hoping and praying somebody doesn't hurt themselves making a stupid hustle play.

    Honestly, I haven't even bothered to watch the hockey recaps on sportscenter since the lockout... and I don't miss hockey a bit.

    I don't have a problem with it so long as it's not more than about a 1 1/2 game benching. They really don't have many good options at third so it's bound to hurt them a bit. Though they might be okay if Freel played there for a couple days and Hamilton filled in at center.

    I should be in the opposite situation. I was destroying my opponent in all the rate stats, but for some reason it wouldn't count my starts by Rich Hill, Jake Peavy, and Anthony Reyes... so I ended up getting beaten in IP, W, and K when adding it up manually shows I should have won those three by a wide margin. Then again, there was an error with my particular league and so I still can't get in.

    Well, if really enjoy on pace stats at this point in the season, A-Rod is on pace to hit 121 HR for an 81-81 Yankees, and Felix Hernandez is on pace for a 0.00 ERA and 297 Strikeouts for a 97-65 Mariners team. I agree. I always love looking at pace stats early in the year. Another one, the Washington Nationals are on pace to go 18-144 this year. That one actually might not surprise me. Though I imagine Patterson would pick up the next 17 wins. The rest of that pitching staff aside from him and Cordero might be the worst I've ever seen.
