Well they usually have a lot of money to spend on the draft, surprisingly. They aren't that cheap. I'm thinking White must be throwing up a out of line bonus demand. As for the A's. Green, Scheppers, Wheeler and sleeper Raley remain possibilities. The A's have enough money to take anyone btw. FWIW, dont be shocked to here Kipnis.... Well I'm not surprised they were willing to spend. But they were extremely tight lipped about their pick, and nobody was connected to Crow.
I really think we will take another guy we werent linked to with the first pick. A guy like Poythress or Krauss wouldnt shock me. I wouldnt mind Jeff Malm. I would love to have Malm, but he's a bit of an overdraft there. Granted, there's no way he lasts til our 2nd pick. The one I keep thinking is our big sleeper is Kentrail Davis. He's the quintessential Wilken pick. The only thing is, I'd think we'd have heard something about a predraft deal if they were going to risk nabbing him.
I'm guardedly optimistic with everything going crazy at the last moment here, but Wilken seems to disappoint me every year... no matter who is on the board. And there's no guarantee anybody we really want will actually drop.
I recall a story a few years ago about a third baseman who was a minor league/Japanese League lifer and got an invitation to Cubs camp at age 31 or 32. He and his wife had squirreled away every dollar they could and had managed to save almost $2 million. At that point, he had been invited to a few camps and had a better chance of making the cut with one of the other teams. However, he had always wanted to play for the Cubs and, with the money in the bank, lived his fantasy -- at least for spring training. While I don't remember his name, I recall that he was a pleasant person and a good story for the papers. I don't think it was Casey McGehee, but his name was similar to that. Does anyone remember this guy? __________________________________________________________ Sandberg>Mazeroski>Morgan Only person I can think of that fits the bill is Scott McClain, but I don't recall that story.
Whoop de crap. I was one of the very few people who still believed Andruw Jones of all people still had something left in his bat before this season... I actually defended the Jim Edmonds trade the year before when he looked washed up... and even I think Freddy Garcia is absolutely toast.
He just got career win #2000 in a 15 inning marathon game vs Pittsburg. He's not perfect by any means, but he's absolutely the best manager of his generation... Tony La Russa's loud cries for attention notwithstanding.
I'll be the first to admit I haven't seen much of him, but he seemed to have plus raw power to me. I don't expect him to put up the mega power numbers Dominguez will, but I think his ability to make contact covers the gap.
Heckathorn is off the board. I wouldn't mind Renfroe either. Damn, you're right. I'll edit in a second. And Meph, what do you have against Poythress? And for that matter, Sanchez?
Based on what's left on the board, my top five at this point. 1) David Renfroe, SS, South Panola HS 2) Rich Poythress, 1B, Georgia 3) Garrett Gould, RHP, Maize HS 4) Tony Sanchez, C, Boston College 5) Slade Heathcott, OF, Texas HS
Mitchell seems like the perfect Wilken pick. I don't see us passing on him should he happen to drop... but I don't see it as particularly likely. I think Andy Oliver is a bit of a sleeper for us as well.
