  1. Nobody here has said that. Lou does a lot of things for this team that none of us here could even come close to him at. But I absolutely understand the numbers behind the game better than he does. I'll guaran-damn-tee it. His lineups are suboptimal. His bullpen leverage last year was off base. He still insists on using the hit and run. He occasionally lays down sac bunts at silly times. He lets Aaron Miles into the game... I've never said I could do his job. But if I had his ear, he'd be able to do his job a lot better.
  2. Mark Fidrych died today. http://wbztv.com/local/mark.Fidrych.dies.2.983934.html
  3. Words like "bad" and "terrible" are awkward when it comes to judging managers... as the pool of people you're comparing them to can be different. With players, we know we're comparing them to other players... with managers, are we comparing them to other managers or to what decisions any of us might make? Lou is probably about average tactically compared to other mlb managers... but I'd venture to say that he's not nearly as good as those of us on the board that have taken the time to familiarize ourselves with the math behind the decisions. That said, a good portion of his job also consists of handling the egos of everybody on this team... which almost certainly has some impact on a few of his oddball decisions. And that is a job that I don't think anybody on this board is even remotely qualified to criticize him for, as he has (generally) done a pretty good job... with a few notable exceptions (Hill, Pie, etc...)
  4. Albert Belle probably belongs on the list... Robbie Alomar certainly does, after spitting on that ump (as well as the allegations he purposefully gave HIV to his gf). I can't recall if Carl Everett was just garden-variety crazy or if there was violence in there either... but any excuse to bring up the fact he doesn't believe in dinosaurs is a good one.
  5. It's early, but Theriot is turning on a lot more pitches this year. If he keeps this up, he might develop slightly below average power.
  6. We should slap the next person who says this. It doesn't matter. It's not Theriot's fault. The game was over when that ball came off Braun's bat, barring a miracle one way or the other. There's a solid dozen things to be legitimately pissed about after this game. Theriot's defensive error early in the game, Soriano misplaying Weeks double in the 9th, every single move Lou made after pulling Harden... Theriot's decision to throw home in the ninth is not one of them.
  7. That's absurd. Hoff had a good chance to drive the run in with a sac fly or a hit, and probably less of a chance to gidp than Miles. Gathright was extremely unlikely to ground into the dp.
  8. There was about a 10% chance to get the runner at home. There was about similarly low chance to turn two. You can't pin this one on Theriot... 90% of the time the game is over when he picks it up there... no matter which play he tries to make.
  9. Soriano isn't a defensive liability. The best move for the team is probably to pull Bradley and move Fukudome to right... if you absolutely feel the need to use a defensive replacement. I wouldn't. I didnt understand the point to begin with. Is Gathright even a good enough outfielder to warrant the move 2 games in a row? No, he's not. He's above average, but this is nowhere close to last season where we had Edmonds (bad CF), and Pie (amazing CF). The only reason to bring him in as a defensive replacement is to help alleviate some of the strain on our perpetual injury concerns in Bradley and Soriano... Fukudome should never be getting the hook for defense. And Reed Johnson should never, ever be a defensive replacement for anybody other than Micah Hoffpaiur.
  10. The problem is, fans live in the now. They don't look at the big picture, they just look at whats happening right now, and if something isn't working right now, they want it fixed. If we could all only calm down and look at the bigger picture, which part of it is...its been 4 games!!...we would all be better off. But since we don't, we see Lee slumping and we want to DFA him or something. Lee's been bad for more than 4 games though. Lee's been bad since about month 3 last year. Lee is a real concern. And before that, he was looking like the DLee of old. Considering I read an article lately where he claimed to have been battling nagging injuries all through the second half of last year, I don't see a problem with taking a deep breath and acting rationally.
  11. Soriano isn't a defensive liability. The best move for the team is probably to pull Bradley and move Fukudome to right... if you absolutely feel the need to use a defensive replacement. I wouldn't.
  12. the outfielder - soriano - got a bad jump on a routine fly ball. you're ripping a shortstop for not making a catch on a lazy fly ball to left field. Sori didn't get a bad jump. He was badly positioned... which is more the fault of the coaching staff and Lou.
  13. attempt to start a double play with his poor arm when braun has pretty good speed, hit the ball to the third base side of SS and didn't hit it particularly hard? if they'd tried to turn the DP braun would've been safe by a step and a half and you'd be here bitching that theriot didn't throw home. I would have supported the higher percentage play, which in this instance would have been trying to turn two. Braun doesn't have good speed, and he's running from the 3rd base side of the bag. If you arm sucks, it stands to reason maybe he should make the shorter throw. Except Braun does have good speed. Not Ichiro speed or anything, but there was a lower chance of Theriot turning two than getting Weeks at home. Theriot made the right call at the end of the game there... and even if you don't believe it was the right call, to pretend it isn't easily defensible is dishonest.
  14. Yeah, not to mention the bullpen probably looked worse then than now. An excellent point. Woody blew his first save against the Brewers too.
  15. After four games last season: Geovany Soto - 2 for 12, 3 walks Aramis Ramirez - 2 for 13, 3 walk Alfonso Soriano - 1 for 17, 1 walk Calm down you crazy bastards.
  16. more so than you probably think. Are you Mike North? Cause that'd explain a lot.
  17. I'm fairly confident that will be asked Every day, pal, every day. Next question. Will you come to my birthday party?
  18. Seriously... we could have had Freddi Gonzalez. He reads sabermetric books, and worked under Bobby Cox his entire career.
  19. Oh, great. Not only did he choose Miles to bat... but he asked him to hit and run, which is a horrible percentage play.
  20. Please get Gooz and Gregg warm... and let Vizcaino rot.
  21. Aaron Miles is 1 for 6 with 1k off Coffey in his career. Anybody else have any bright ideas why he'd choose Miles?
  22. Aaron Miles? Are you [expletive] kidding?
