  1. I would encourage everybody to make a donation to JDRF today in honor of Ron.
  2. I'd love to get Russell Martin as a backup catcher, but that's probably pretty unlikely. Edwin Encarnacion on the other hand, may be willing to go as low as a minor league deal. I'd love to stash him at Iowa in case of a Ramirez injury. At some point, it'd be nice to be able to call up an actual 3B instead of playing a backup 2B out of position.
  3. For the rest of my life, I don't think there will be a time I turn on a cubs radio broadcast and dont miss him. I don't know what else to say but that.
  4. The thought had definitely occurred to me that Hendry may be planning on trading Castillo or Chirinos.
  5. I wouldn't have had much of a problem with $14 mil per, but the fact it took 4 years makes me glad we didn't sign him. Hopefully this convinces the front office to go with a full rebuild this offseason instead of signing Lance Berkman and Bobby Jenks and struggling to 78 wins.
  6. I like Baker. He would be a great bench player for a team with a manager who realizes he should never face a righty. I can't remember if Quade was that smart, though.
  7. It was more, "if we take on their awful contract, we won't have to give up anything for Jake Fox, who might bring a bit of power to this very punchless offense." Of course, Jake Fox didn't work out. But despite what the media portrayed, Aaron Miles was not the A's real target.
  8. Your list is pretty much the main ones. The backup catcher competition is going to be pretty fierce. Guyer will be auditioning for 4th or 5th OF (maybe even platoon partner for Colvin). Assuming we move Fukudome this offseason, Jackson will get an extended look with an eye towards perhaps pushing Colvin to the bench in the summer, or taking over in CF after we trade Byrd (if we're out of the race.) The starting rotation could be something to keep an eye on as well. Dempster and Z are pretty much the only locks. Wells, Gorz, and Silva have the lead on the last 3 spots but I'm surely going to be keeping an eye on a few of our young pitchers who could force their way in. Archer supposedly will get a real shot. Hopefully Cashner gets a shot in the rotation as well. The front office has made it perfectly clear that we will give Samardzija as many chances as humanly possible as well. Jay Jackson could be a darkhorse candidate for fifth starter or even a bullpen gig... Chris Carpenter too, but it's more likely his would be a bullpen gig.
  9. I like Dunn quite a bit, but let's not forget that his profile is not that of a player who is likely to age gracefully. Signing him with an eye towards competing in 2013 is a very risky move, and not one that I would endorse.
  10. Miles was a FA when Cubs signed him, Cardinals didn't released him. Cubs traded him to A's, then A's traded him to Reds, then got released by the Reds, and finally Cardinals picked him up... Then he goes .281/.311/.317 in 139 ABs which was about 20 times better than what he did with the Cubs and about on par with the Cardinals earlier in his career. Miles was a FA when the Cubs signed him because the Cardinals had non-tendered him. There's not much difference between that and releasing him.
  11. Perhaps the most important part of picking up Hudson would be that it would allow Dewitt to become he primary backup at 3B. I'm tired of seeing Bobby Scales get called up, or Jeff Baker facing a righty.
  12. Roberto Alomar Jeff Bagwell Bert Blyleven Kevin Brown Barry Larkin Edgar Martinez Mark McGwire Rafael Palmeiro Tim Raines Alan Trammell Larry Walker
  13. A's and Iwakuma making me look bad. #-o http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=reu-japaniwakuma Not as bad as the A's front office is going to look. How much did the flush down the toilet for the posting fee $14million? It's my understanding that the posting fee is only paid if he signs with the club. NPB will have some incentive to talk some sense into the guy.
  14. I'd love to have him in the system. He'd make an adequate backup at the corners and still has a nice ceiling. I just wouldn't want to trust him with a starting job out of the gates.
  15. That's stupid. The difference between Adam Dunn and Lyle Overbay is 2-3 wins.
  16. Good luck getting the O's front office to agree to a reasonable package.
  17. I was just thinking of putting up another one of these posts. Thanks for making life easy on me.
  18. Robin Roberts. Acceptable.
  19. I'm giving him a freebie this year on account of the TJS. All I was looking for was a healthy first full season back and he delivered on that. His results next year should be much more indicative of his prospect status. It'll be important to see him start throwing that splitter again though...

  21. Well make sure to post something about it tomorrow. I don't want to have to do the work myself. On that note, I'm waiting for somebody to post their top 50 or so so I can just copy and paste names in the order I want. Typing it all out is more work I don't want to do myself.
  22. I don't want Ryne anywhere near this team, even if it's only as bench coach. I have terrible visions of us bunting in the 1st inning with our #3 hitter. Ryno will be our manager at some point. There's simply no avoiding it. I'd rather get it out of the way while we're in a transitional phase.
  23. What moron ever decided to start spouting off about consistency in the first place anyways? I'd much rather have a team full of streaky guys.
  24. My sentiments exactly.
  25. 5/58 is probably too high. He's a 3.5 - 4 win guy, but 30 years old and already playing bad defense at a position up the middle. If he loses another step, he's gonna finally have to move off 2B, which would put a pretty big hurt on his value.
