  1. He was flying from Boston to Florida the day of the draft. I think the Cubs area scout got ahold of his father to see how committed he was to college. Maybe someone will come along and let us know the story. :)
  2. They had online player journals; Jon Searles wrote one. Here's the website, but it doesn't look like it's being updated. I think I read somewhere that the guy who started it was still in college? Maybe I'm wrong.
  3. Argh, my brilliant response was eaten, so here are some random thoughts instead. The writeup was interesting, but I don't really see Gallagher and Slowey as being hugely similar pitchers, so the smackdown concept fell flat for me. The comments seem to reflect that. Sickels mentioned that Gallagher's BB rate spiked after his AA promotion. He also developed more of a LHB-RHB split than he had demonstrated in Peoria/Daytona. (Link to AA pitching splits). That's partly because he walked LHBs at 2x the rate of RHBs (8.4/9!) and partly because LHs hit against him a bit better. He had a good last month of the season (still too many BBs, but he did lower the rate throughout the season). From the broadcasts and from what I've been reading lately, he worked a lot on developing changeup last season and was regularly throwing it in West Tenn.
  4. This may be more that The Powers That Be see DeRosa as a better RF backup or platoon option since he has experience there. I've heard that he has a good outfield arm. It would make more sense to have him play RF and Theriot 2B than the reverse if you want them both in the lineup. Eric Patterson will hopefully earn a look later this season. I'm all for positional flexibility when it makes sense.
  5. Kornheiser is returning to terrestrial radio with a weekday show on Washington Post Radio (1500 AM and 107.7 FM, DC area) that will air 8:30-10:30am ET starting Feb. 20. The show has been picked up by XM with a slight delay.
  6. He's almost transparent!
  7. Welcome back, JC. Whether it was a hiatus or sabbatical, I'm done with it. Its good to be home. Too bad, suckers. Haven't had to break out that emoticon out since the last time your graced us with your presence. :D Welcome back! Despite my infrequent posting over the past few months, I still dominate you by way of number of posts. That is still the way you determine status around here, correct? Or, is it the amount of times you force people to eat crow? There's also the occasional vote to determine whether or not you're a true Cubs fan.
  8. Every little detail is going to be reported after the fiasco of Prior's special injury-prevention pitching program that seemingly involved him not pitching last spring training (as well as other past events).
  9. Last season Theriot was interviewed by Santo on a radio pregame show. I think there were some posts here about it, because Theriot mentioned mid-interview that the coaches were working with him to be more aggressive at the plate 'because the first pitch you see might be the best pitch to hit.' In that same interview, I could have sworn that Theriot said he'd played all 3 OF positions in the past, though he didn't specify when. Does anyone else recall something like that? Sing it! I'd love for that to happen.
  10. I am definitely looking forward to different management/coaching styles and philosophies this season.
  11. He's not a big Dave Otto fan, either.
  12. What does this mean? Will you be shocked if he has an era between 4 and 6? Marquis' ERA will definitely be a predictions contest category. Be sure to enter.
  13. Hendry has made sure he won't go quietly. That 75-80M payroll won't pay for the players he's already signed in a couple of years.
  14. You have to pay by credit card (your cash is no good!) for bleacher tickets during the first weekend of sales.
  15. Well, that's certainly something to be proud of.
  16. Please more complaining (or not) about the Cubs and less about each other...
  17. And it would be more realistic if it were aflame and crash-landing.
  18. If you have a problem when they don't win, you must have had a lot of problems over the years. I don't expect much out of this team next year, and Hendry has set it up so there's a lot more money sunk into the team for years to come. I'm not going to bother spending any money going to games this season. Maybe I'll buy a few tickets to sell to the true believers on EBay. I might as well profit.
  19. This thread is going to be moved to the FAQ forum. Feel free to post here if you have an addition for the list on the first page.

  21. As far as I know, it's a one-time deal and you have to register your paypal email account ahead of time ... but I think you can have two paypal accounts drawn off the same name/bank account/credit card, so you should be able to use two paypal email addresses for two discounts if you set it up ahead of time. Google checkout is reportedly going to match this offer over the next few days.
  22. Paypal is running a promotion that gives paypal users a $15 rebate on paypal purchases of $30 or more made between February 8 and March 31. EBay purchases are eligible. More info here.
  23. We're honored by your presence, HenryBlanco. The list should be updated through here.
