    Hendry introduces him as "our new leadoff hitter, Alfonso Soriano." Soriano: Thought he did a good job in the outfield last season and thinks the Cubs have a 2bman, but is happy to play wherever it will make the team happy. Thinks the adjustment to day games won't be a big deal. Not surprised by length of deal, has been healthy and played over 145 games for a long time.

    Hendry: after the season, I sat down with Kinney, FitzSimmons and McDonough to map out the off-season, and we just decided to get the best player out there.

    Sorry, Uber! On Sports Center last night, they talked about how the Dodgers were considering filing tampering charges against the Red Sox, alleging that they contacted him during the season about whether he would opt out and what kind of contract he'd consider if he did. Last season, Tampa Bay believed the Red Sox illegally contacted Lugo to see if he'd demand a contract extension if he were traded to them ... so it's not the first time recently that there have been suspicions.

    how long would it have been before Matzualphabet was FA? I think after the 2008 season? Someone here probably has a better idea.

    The Seattle article sounds like speculation to me. ETA: The mlb article doesn't make much sense -- 'The Cubs didn't make an offer, and Schmidt is ignoring the offer they didn't make.' I didn't see this quoted earlier -- here's Bruce's take from today's Daily Herald. Maybe not what I'd prefer to hear ... but I'd rather keep it realistic. Bruce also mentions a few caveats on Schmidt.

    He's the baseball writer for USA Today, among other things. No Cubs bias either way that I'm aware of. He caught some flak from Cubs fans a few months ago when he wrote about Dusty's tenure in Chicago and the stacks of racist mail he received.

    Bob Nightengale was on Charley Steiner's XM radio show a couple of hours ago (noonish CT?). He said the pitching market was heating up and that he expected a slew of signings leading into and during the winter meetings. He expects Jason Schmidt to sign next week and said the Cubs were the favorites in his opinion. Seattle doesn't seem willing to match the dollar amounts being tossed around and, although the Dodgers seem interested, it's hard to gauge how interested they are. Nightengale also said he thought Zito would sign later.

    Or someone talked to Schmidt's agent and someone talked to the Cubs, which is probably more likely. I'm going with the people who have Cubs contacts on this one.
