  1. The Cubs.com roster now stands at 37. Dopirak, Negron, Harben and O'Malley are no longer listed.
  2. I just hope Levine is on to something with the Schmidt rumors.
  3. On the flip side, I think Levine is the only one who has said Schmidt is a serious target.
  4. He's just gearing up for Matt Murton Beannie Baby Day. Yeah, I like what this guy has to say, too!
  5. From the quotes at Cubs.com, it sounds like Soriano is agreeable to playing any of the OF positions, but doesn't want to be shifted around among them. Maybe that could change depending on circumstances.
  6. Kaplan also quoted unnamed agents as saying that Hendry's presentation was the best he'd ever seen and that Hendry's rep among players (past and present) helped seal the deal. Lou was active in this recruiting process and also met with Soriano separately. Hendry says he'll be pursuing pitching. As I posted earlier, there's some speculation that they wanted to sign Soriano early to boost credibility and improve there chances with potential FAs, such as Schmidt.
  7. When Levine was on ESPN radio last night, there was some talk about how surprising it was that Soriano signed so quickly (I know, big contract). He said that Lou has been very active in recruiting free agents and that -- as you mention above -- they wanted to sign Soriano early to build credibility for future FA and trade targets.
  8. Heads-up that Cubs President John McDonough will be on the Score (670am) tomorrow afternoon at 1pm CT. He'll be interviewed by Murphy.
  9. Hendry signed Aramis on Sunday, Nov. 12 and the GM meetings in Florida began Monday (the next day). He reportedly stayed in Florida until late Saturday/Sunday. I think they just didn't have time to do it earlier at Wrigley. Keeping him here was a big signing and I'm all for press conferencing it to show Aramis some love. The Trib article (also linked in the Soriano thread) says the Soriano press conference will be next week.
  10. Per the Score, the Cubs are having a press conference tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon at 3:30 CT for the re-signing of Aramis.
  11. If the payroll is now $120M, they should be able to get him. If it's still in that $110-115M range, then it would seem they would need to dump 2 of the following 4 salaries for some margin: Dempster, Eyre, Jones and Izturis. For argument's sake, I am assuming Barrett and Howry are going nowhere. Phil Rogers hints that payroll might top $125M: ETA: Murphy on the Score says that all indications are that payroll will be $120M+.
  12. Levine was on ESPN radio earlier tonight and said that the Cubs had made inroads with Schmidt and had a shot at landing him.
  13. Link. Bruce seemed to think he had a pretty solid source. :) A few people upthread reported hearing Piniella say on WGN that Soriano would be playing one of the corners and that the Cubs may still be in the market for a CFer.
  14. I'll echo a couple others upthread who heard it reaported on the Score as 'in the neighborhood' of 6yr /$90M guaranteed; 2 option years and multiple incentives making it potentially 8yr/$136.
  15. Clearly Negrón's Gauntlet of Power has been recharged.
  16. I've never heard of this being applied in real life. "The Yankees wanted to sign another free agent, but couldn't because of the CBA cap on A/B type free agent signings." Maybe it has been. I just haven't heard of it.
  17. Phil Rogers latest column says Igawa is expected to be posted on Monday (Nov. 20).
  18. Phil Rogers has a column up mainly about the trade. He includes this speculation: Another note from an accompanying column:
