  1. The minor league rosters freeze on Monday, Nov. 20, so the Cubs have some rostering decisions to make, pronto. If you follow the link, AZ Phil has the list of players eligible for the draft as well as some predictions on who the Cubs will (and will not) roster. ETA: Carlos Vasquez would have been eligible for the draft had the Cubs chosen not to protect him.
  2. The Astros have reportedly made offers to Soriano and Carlos Lee.
  3. Cubs.com with the details about Wood's incentives:
  4. Piniella = tanned, rested, ready, angrier, beardless Cubs Santa
  5. ETA: Hendry gives no-trade clauses to relief pitchers; that wouldn't be a sticking point.
  6. No wonder he's #1 Prospect!!!!
  7. Not that Hank White has done too much better. Hank can still coast for a while on being the MVP of the Caribbean World Series. Or something.
  8. Plus -- in the film clip I saw of Veal when he was drafted, he was wearing long socks. :)
  9. Too bad Rnez left his glove behind by the time he came to play for the Cubs.
  10. I think the new threshold is $148M -- at least according to a Red Sox site that was tracking their payroll and projecting their final budget to be ~$140M. I linked to it, but it's likely lost in the morass of either the JD Drew thread or the 51.1 thread.
  11. FWIW: Murphy had Josh Lewin, 'voice of the Rangers' on the Score, and he said that DeRosa completely changed his approach once he came to Texas. He and Michael Young apparently now look identical batting when viewed on split-screen. He's apparently good defensively wherever he's been put and he can throw the ball (ex-Penn QB).
  12. I realize a lot of the payroll issues are interrelated, but please try to keep the DeRosa discussion in the DeRosa thread. Thanks.
  13. Someone mentioned this in one of the threads below. That's the only details I've heard on the contract breakdown. I'd guess that it steps up each year ... but absent that info, splitting it equally for the first two years would make it $3.75M / $3.75M / $5.5M. Also, Blanco's contract contains a mutual option for 2009. Rotoworld: Blanco gets a $750,000 signing bonus, $1.4 mil this year and $2.8 mil next year and is guaranteed $5.25 million. The third year is a mutual option for $3 million with a $300,000 buyout and could become guaranteed if he reaches certain performance levels which would also escalate the option year up to $4.5 million.
  14. Hendry let Dusty call the shots in terms of playing time, so I do think it will ultimately be up to Piniella to fill out the lineup cards. Some of what Hendry has said about DeRosa reminds me of what he had to say about Barrett when he aquired Barrett. To that extent, I'm hopeful.
  15. Cubs.com Hendry no doubt likes his versatility, but he directly states that he brought DeRosa in to play 2B. I don't know how much more directly and clearly that has to be stated. I don't think I'm the one making assumptions about how they plan to use DeRosa.
  16. Cubs will have to improve their game to pass Pittsburgh in the standings.
  17. You can go to Cubs.com and read the story with quotes from Hendry and DeRosa talking about how he'll be the starting 2Bman. Are we supposed to think that the two people who signed the contract are lying for no apparent reason about their intentions in doing so?
  18. A lot of GMs set aside time today to schedule meetings with agents & players (and each other). It may well be that Hendry is meeting with Meche/Meche's agent and that along with the fact that Hendry has been making deals has sparked the speculation. Understandable. I didn't hear the Levine report -- did he give any details?
  19. I would really like to see the acceptable fans' list. From what I can tell, this board has narrowed Hendry's acceptable signing list to JD Drew and everybody else is subpar or a waste of money. Have you tried reading posts and/or scrolling to see other threads, then clicking on them?
