  1. I agree on Soriano. I just fear that Baker would bat him 2nd where he would hurt more than help. I'd rather have Walker than Soriano. But, if the Cubs did trade for Soriano, would you rather have Soriano or Neifi batting 2nd? I think I'd prefer Soriano. Remembering that Dusty is the manager, it would probably be one of those two rather than Murton. I'd want Bradley batting 2nd. The only reason I'd want Soriano on the team is if Bradley was in right. Oh, sorry. I didn't have Bradley on the roster. I'm assuming his price tag will be too steep now, since Pierre is off the market. I'd have Bradley there too if he was on the roster.
  2. I see no reason for the As to have interest in Mench. A's are shopping for a RH power bat. Very odd considering how stacked they are in the OF. Rumor is they want to DH Dan Johnson and move Swisher to 1b. Johnson, Swisher, Chavez and Kotsay are all lefty hitters. Well, Swisher is a switch hitter. I'm just passing along the rumor. Don't shoot the messenger.

  5. Hasn't Bradley's stock risen since the trade for Pierre? The Yankees still want a CFer. Boston might need one. Detroit is talking to Damon. I'm sure other teams do as well, since there were so many teams interested in Pierre. Are we willing to overpay dramatically for Bradley? When is the non tender date? Probably won't matter since Bradley would probably not pick the Cubs if he's non tendered. We have a CF now and that's the position he prefers. We should have locked up Bradley rather than Pierre, or at least before trading for Pierre. But, what's done is done.
  6. Patterson does have 5 tools. He just hasn't put them all together. Maybe he will some day, maybe he won't. Did you hope he would fail while many of us cheered for him to succeed? So you can say "I told you so"? Are you saying that you hoped that Patterson would fail just so you could rub people's noses in it? Did you place more importance on this than the Cub's winning? Because you say so? I'm sold.
  7. I agree that if you deduct the caught stealing (and picked off first base) from Pierre's OBP, you also have to consider each of his successful steals as equal to a double. That makes for a lot of doubles. Does anyone worry that Baker would use the #2 hitter to bunt Pierre (who steals 2nd) to 3rd like Baylor used to do ALL THE TIME?
  8. Either that or it's purely chance. Dusty Baker will be along shortly to explain why Pierre is better during the day. :D
  9. Why is an intelligent discussion from people who disagree about a particular subject such a bad thing? That's how I learned so much. And, I'm still learning new stuff everyday.
  10. It's called discussion. If you don't like discussion, feel free to stay out of them. But, most certainly stop with the generalizations and insults of other posters.
  11. Confirmed. Cool. 2 confirmations and 2 denials. Which is it? Did Juan Pierre get caught stealing 2nd or 3rd 17 times last season, or was he picked off 1st base half of those times? Or, was he caught stealing 17 times and picked off maybe another 3 or 4 times?
  12. Not true. Aaron Miles, Clint Barmes, Neifi Perez or any of the other guys they've had in Colorado with little to no power have incredible surges in offensive production due to the size of Coors Field. HR's actually aren't all that much higher than other parks, if I recall correctly. The thinner air doesn't just affect how far you can hit the ball. It also affects pitching. Pitches move because of friction with the air. Less dense air=less movement on the pitch. Curve balls and sliders move less. Knuckleballs? ha! Fastballs with nasty movement become meatballs. Right. Coors numbers has just as much to do with pitchers losing stuff than it has to do with "thin air" causing the ball to carry. I did leave that out, but it was supposed to be assumed that the mile high positioning of the stadium has a lot to do with the offensive surge. I was just correcting the person who stated that it's only offensively superior for power hitters, which isn't true. The dimensions make it very difficult to hit a ball out in center (unless you hit a Sammy Sosa power shot). Still waiting for confirmation from someone that a pick off is considered a Caught Stealing?

  14. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-051206cubs,1,1301681.story?coll=cs-cubs-headlines It says there are two offers on the table. One for Pierre, and one for several Cub players for one player in return - then says the Cubs have also had talks with Tampa for Lugo and Huff. George Offman was on the radio this morning and said there's another offer on the table from Hendry but no one is sure exactly who it is to yet - "but they've been in talks with the Dodgers, Rangers, Nationals, etc." To me, that reads as the other deal is for either Huff or Lugo.
  15. To put this in perspective, that's only 4 runs scored behind Furcal and second best among national league leadoff hitters last year. As such, it's hard to fault his runs scored. I would say that the 17 caught steals, along with the .326 OBP is why his run scoring wasn't where it should be. I have a dumb question that I'm hoping someone can answer. Does getting picked off 1st base count towards Caught Stealing?
  16. Interesting. How bad do the Yanks want to get rid of Pavano? Would Philly think he is good enough or would the Cubs or Yanks have to add a prospect to Philly? I believe it was Pavano that wanted out of NY, moreso than the other way around.
  17. In 2004 Pierre hit .380 in (non-sacrifice) bunt attempts. In 2005 he hit .431 when bunting for a hit. So, in other words, we should just let him bunt 80% of the time, or better. :D I could deal with a .500 OBP from a fast guy in the lead off spot.
  18. Anybody want to help me promote this deal? Pierre and a pitching prospect to the Yankees. Carl Pavano to the Phillies. Bobby Abreu to the Cubs. Patterson to LA for Bradley.
  19. Ah ha! I got it! I got it! Woo hoo! Pierre and a pitching prospect to the Yankees. Carl Pavano to Philadelphia. Bobby Abreu to Chicago. Sounds good, huh? Patterson to LA for Bradley. Done.
  20. Bradley's stock goes up with the Pierre signing. We are probably out of that one, unless we want to overpay some more.
  21. I'm curious what Pierre's AVG would be if he bunted every time?
  22. Nah. Cardinal fans said he was the greatest defensive shortstop since Ozzie Smith. Of course, they were saying that BEFORE he left. Not sure what they are saying now.
  23. 3m for a 4th outfielder sounds like it's right in Hendry's ballpark. He's paying Neifi 2.5m to "supposedly" be a back up middle infielder.
  24. I was never enamored with Pierre. But, he's a Cub. It's done. He is in his free agent year, so we should hope he puts up free agent year numbers. I'm fine with the players included in the trade. With several teams knocking on the door, the Cubs were going to have to offer a lot to get their man. It's not the direction I would have gone with this team, but Hendry and Baker have gotten their wish on a true lead off hitter. The biggest relief will be that Hendry and Baker can stop making goo-goo eyes at Pierre from across the US of A. They can do it behind closed doors where none of the rest of us have to continue watching. :pukel: He will be an improvement to the OBP at the top of the order. That was a priority this offseason.
  25. Yep. Urlacher gets my vote also. Anyone who can make two blocks like Urlacher did on the Vasher 109 FG attempt touchdown return is #1 in my book, even if that wasn't a defensive play.
