  1. Detroit could surprise a bit this year. Granderson is supposed to be the real deal. Shelton is playing his first full season. Maggs appears to be healthy. Pudge and Guillen are coming off of down years and are typically much better than they were last year. Polanco and Inge are nice role players. The addition of Kenny Rogers, Bonderman now has major league experience, and Verlander could be a ROY candidate. They have a solid bench and no real weakness except maybe middle relief. If they stay healthy, they are not an "easy" series for anyone.
  2. Agreed. And the bullpen helped with a lot of those losses. It is a stronger bullpen this year, so hopefully they will protect more leads.
  3. For Premium members, it's only page 2. Which is it?
  4. And he just singled. He's got 9 XBH's this week. 2 doubles, 2 triples and 5 HR's.
  5. The week isn't over yet, but is there are an argument for one of the best opening weeks in MLB history? The guy is just insane right now. Why are they still pitching to him?

    Jock

Good news, it's only a 3 year contract.
  7. Shelton is 2-2 (2 triples) and 3 RBI so far today in just two at bats. I wouldn't trade him to anyone until he cools off.
  8. I applaud Neifi's enthusiasm in helping out, but I'd prefer to see Derrek Lee or Aramis Ramirez working with Cedeno on his hitting. Neifi can help him with his defense.
  9. Dusty factor alone is why I would probably have picked up Hanley Ramirez over Cedeno.

    Week 1

I'd blow it up if I were you.
  11. Is the LaTroy Hawkins trade far enough in the past now that San Fran would be willing to trade for another Cub reliever? :D
  12. I suppose you would. But, for some unknown reason, these crap pitchers look like Cy Young when they face the Cubs. Where is Casey Daigle now?
  13. You rang? Let's see, how do I put into words my current opinion of Chris Shelton? Hmm. Nope, no words, all I got is..... :w00t: :facesjump: :cheer: :jive: :wtg: :stickman: :hail: :loco: \:D/ =D>
  14. Maybe Jim Edmonds should take a step back and think about all the great baseball players who have used that very same shower.
  15. I won't discount that a pitcher can be smart enough to change the way they pitch given the weather patterns, but if that is true, why did this not take place last year? Did he just become a smart pitcher? I don't think so. I was impressed that he got all those ground balls yesterday as well. But, some of those balls were hit hard, and probably would have left the park on a typical day, just like they left the park on a typical day last year. Maddux surrenders home run balls much more than he used to. His skills are diminishing. He's still going to throw a gem on occasion, but he's clearly not the same pitcher he was when he was younger. This coming from a huge Greg Maddux fan. I hope he goes 20-0 this year. But, it's not going to happen. All he was really expected to be was a good pitcher that kept us in ball games. We can't really ask for more than that. The horses are supposed to do the rest.
  16. Not my era but I looked that guy up...flat out BRUTAL. How the hell did he play 11 years? Wait a minute. If Mick Kelleher is not your era, how do you know enough about Earl Weaver to be able to make comparisons of his managing style with Don Baylor?
  17. Shelton=my hero!
  18. Found your problem. Maybe you could start liking a better team? Easier said than done. And I'm totally with you, KatJ. My mood is impacted by the Cubs to a far greater degree than it really should be. So far, I've been unable to find a cure. Death is the only cure. If a person can just start rooting for a different team, then they never really lived and died with their team to begin with. Well said!
  19. I don't care if Walker is a crybaby and a tattletail, if he's the better player, he should play. But, this really isn't my issue. I can live with Neifi playing. But, he needs to hit at the bottom of the order. If he goes 3-4 hitting 8th, I'm not complaining. I would prefer Walker or Hairston in there regularly, but if Neifi gets a rare start, I'm cool. But, for the love of all things good, bat him where he belongs.
  20. Just to add a bit more to the story, I think LA was a place the Cubs were hoping they could ship Todd Walker. There was a rumor of Kent possibly moving to 1b, which would have opened up 2nd for Walker, at least until Izturis comes off the DL. Nomar wasn't signed yet, so it was looking like a match.
  21. Not only did he sign Furcal, but he signed Nomar too. Not that Nomar was coming back anyway, but.... Dusty flew out to LA to speak with Milton Bradley. I would have been thrilled to have Bradley in RF and hitting 2nd. Anyway, nothing came of it, and Bradley was traded to Oakland for a marginal prospect. I want to say that the Dodgers were also interested in packaging Derek Lowe with Bradley to relieve salary, and not many teams besides the Cubs could take on that salary. I believe the Cubs were interested, but that never materialized either. I really don't know much more than that, but I can't imagine that Dusty left LA with a bad impression of Bradley. I'd guess that LA probably just didn't want to deal with the Cubs. I know Bradley isn't a saint, but if the Cubs were interested enough to make a special trip to meet him and I happen to like the guy, a deal to get him would have thrilled me.
  22. Isn't it the Dodgers who refuse to deal with Cubs management?
  23. He shouldn't give up nearly as many in Petco.
  24. Better yet, when does Bynum play. :geek: Batting Neifi at the top of the order is the biggest issue. I don't think anyone needs last years box scores dredged up to prove the point. I can recall a Derrek Lee home run today, and I can recall Matt Murton drawing a walk in his first at bat right after Derrek Lee's home run. Yes, it worked out okay today. But, the bad news is this will only inspire Dusty to do it again in future dates, and more often than not, it's not going to create positive results. In essence, our worst nightmare just came true. That nice day by Neifi likely just secured his #2 spot in the line up for the rest of the year (when he plays).
  25. I gotta disagree with you here. A lot of Juan Pierre's AVG and OBP is generated from infield/bunt hits. The chance to score the runner and be safe at 1st is pretty good, IMO. Couldn't have said it better, BBB. Also, it only took that one attempt to get the defense off balance. While Pierre didn't need a bigger hole to punch the ball through since it was a line drive base hit, it's possible that with the 1b playing a bit closer and leaning towards home that a Pierre grounder could get through. But, I'm not against Pierre attempting the squeeze because he is a very good bunter, and not really a "sacrifice" bunter.
