  1. Walker sure would have been a good lead off hitter this year.
  2. Yeah, but when Izturis comes off the DL, I'm sure the Dodgers would love to move Kent to 1b, Izturis to 2nd and then stick Nomar in LF or RF. I don't think Nomar will give the Dodgers any guff if they end up doing that. As far as Nomar returning to the Cubs, I saw lots of possibilities: #1. Cedeno didn't pan out as a major leaguer. Enter Nomar to play SS. #2. Aramis had another one of his hamstring flare ups. Enter Nomar at 3b. #3. The Cubs couldn't find someone to play RF. Enter Nomar. Now that Derrek Lee is hurt (which I admit I didn't see happening), enter Nomar at 1b. Nomar was probably only going to cost the Cubs 5m. Who would I rather have? Nomar and the potential he could be hurt again or a healthy Jacque Jones? I'll take Nomar. If nothing else, the combo of Cedeno, Walker and Nomar gave the team respectable offense and depth in the middle infield.
  3. Can Pierzynski catch a knuckle ball?
  4. To me, Soriano is a patch. He's not a difference maker. He's also in a 1 year contract. How much do you want to give up for a guy who could be gone at the end of this year? Can his bat (and his bat alone) be enough to turn this organization around? Personally, I don't think so.
  5. I want to say Theo Epstein's recent contract squabbles with Boston were well documented. But, that's Boston.
  6. Busted. I really dislike all the posters on this board screaming about all the sacrifices we attempt. A lot of teams are really successful with the strategy (including the Braves). Unfortunately what most posters dont understand is that it is the execution lacking for the Cubs, not the strategy. I personally would have shipped Hairston to Triple A over the weekend and told him that he could come back to Chicago when he figured out how to advance a runner from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd with a bunt. I've watched Marcus Giles enough to know that he has more success taking the ball the other way to advance the runner than he does dropping down a bunt, which is almost a guaranteed out. At least when Giles takes the ball the other way, he has a shot at getting a hit WHILE still advancing the runner. Small ball has its advantages. Small ball has its appropriate times. If a team has a .270 AVG and a .330 OBP, each out you make takes away one more precious chance that they could have gotten a hit or a walk. While small ball "might" produce a single run, giving up those outs for free reduces the chances of a big inning.
  7. Pierre? His OBP was .326 last year.
  8. Speier is currently the loneliest guy in baseball.
  9. How about re-signing Burnitz for 1 year instead of Jones for 3? I think there was a lot of talk about Austin Kearns being available before the season. burnitz wouldn't make us any better this year. You're right about that. But, his 1 year contract wouldn't be holding the Cubs back from being better a year from now. Jones for 3 years was just a horrible decision.
  10. I'm just trying to bring you back to reality. :) Can you refresh my memory on your rf alternatives? I'm guessing Aubrey Huff is one. Milton Bradley another. Reality? Reality is that we had tons of talent to trade and over 40m to spend, and for that we got two good relief arms and: a back up middle infielder (Neifi), a spot starter (Rusch), a slap hitting, poor OBP lead off man (Pierre) and the 2nd possible worst option to play RF (Jacque Jones). The worst option would have been Encarnacion. It's hindsight now, but Hendry did everything he could to fill the SS position, which happens to be where some of the teams best production is coming from. Outfield is and has been the teams worst problem these last few years, and it still is. Hendry addressed the outfield last when he should have addressed it first. He addressed the lead off position first when he should have been focusing on bringing in guys who are good at getting on base.
  11. I'm not bbb or goony, but these are all names I'd prefer to Jones and/or Pierre. All of whom seem likely to have been available in the last year: Wilkerson Bradley Mench Kearns Dunn (I'm sure someone will say to drop this one) B. Giles (see: Dunn) Klesko Abreu Burrell Floyd Our very own Nomar Cliff Floyd Huff Shawn Green Luis Gonzalez Wily Mo Pena Coco Crisp Reggie Sanders And I'm sure more could be added.
  12. Yeah...I don't know why people would complain after losing 6 straight games. Clearly Baker and Hendry have the NL right where they want them. the 6 game skid sucks, but they're 14-16 with prior, wood, lee and jwilliams out. it could be a lot worse. do you expect them to be tied w/ the cardinals? Personally, I expect them to not be the worst offense in baseball.
  13. Alternatives to Jacque Jones? There are tons of them and I've already named a lot of them. The only reason I'm in this thread is because I don't appreciate someone telling me I'm living in some fantasy world because I wanted the Cubs to aggressively pursue Brian Giles.
  14. So, we should expect Marcus Giles to sign with San Diego when he becomes a free agent, I suppose. We probably shouldn't even bother attempting to sign him either.
  15. Some reasonable Cub fans felt like Hendry didn't do enough to make this a better team in the offseason, and the current results shouldn't be excusable considering how poorly he did.
  16. And Petco Park is one of the worst hitting parks in baseball. Couple in LA, San Fran and Arizona and you have one of the worst hitting divisions in baseball, even with Colorado in the mix. His SLG dropped when he moved to the NL West. I don't think it would be nearly as bad if he was playing the NL Central, one of the best hitting divisions in baseball. What's Giles' OBP right now? SLG isn't the only part of his game.
  17. Bottom line: Giles didn't receive the offers that made it worth his while to leave San Diego. San Diego upped their offer prior to the arbitration deadline and he stayed. Chicago didn't make any offers. Hendry was only interested in signing Furcal. He was so interested in Furcal, that he basically spat upon Nomar.
  18. If that's the case, can you please provide your explanation of why he became a free agent in the first place? If he was so adamant about staying, why did he file for free agency? Oh please, surely you aren't that naive. He filed for free agency to squeeze as much money out of San Diego as possible. Surely you're smart enough to understand that. I'm also smart enough to realize that players will go where the money is. Why is Brian Giles the exception? Why did Nomar re-up with the Cubs in 2005? He's a California boy too. To say he never would have went elsewhere because he loved San Diego is naive. Jacque Jones is a San Diego native. Why did he come here? San Diego was interested in him also. You can apply this same theory to every free agent. Why did they go where they went? For the money. Why did Brian Giles sign that big contract with the Pirates initially if he was so enthralled with playing in San Diego?
  19. If that's the case, can you please provide your explanation of why he became a free agent in the first place? If he was so adamant about staying, why did he file for free agency?
  20. For every reason you can come up with for why he is still in San Diego, I can come up with one for why he shouldn't be. But, in the end, they are all just opinions, therefore it's not just "pure fantasy". Did the Cards make an offer? Seemed to me the Cardinals took the 2006 offseason off. If they did make an offer, were they the slightest bit serious? The Cardinals cried poor all offseason and picked up guys like Aaron Miles and Junior Spivey and Juan Encarnacion. And if the Cardinals offer was 8m and the Cubs offer was 12m, would Giles still not take the Cubs offer because he didn't accept the Cardinals offer? See, we can play this game all day. Hendry targeted Furcal. He expected to get Furcal. He basically ignored Giles from where I sit. The fact Giles is still in San Diego had more to do with the fact teams weren't showing the interest he was hoping for, IMO. If he couldn't get the offers he was hoping for, then I can't blame him for signing with San Diego again. It was very close to the arbitration date, and San Diego probably would not have offered it up, therefore Giles would not have been able to join San Diego until after May 1, making a switch to another team likely. Fact is, we really don't know either way.
  21. Source? common sense. 1. the trib wasn't going to throw down the money. 2. the cubs had to pay giles as much or more than aram. rammy probably wouldn't like that considering his ops is better than giles and he's a lot younger. give giles 3 & 36, and lee probably asks for more than 5 & 65. 3. his family's in sd and you know better than anyone how nice of place sd is. Nah, I asked for a source, not your opinion. If all you can provide is your opinion, then I suppose it isn't "pure fantasy", because your opinion is no better or worse than mine.
  22. The sad thing I agree 100% with you. How egomaniacal must you be to drag not only a team of 25 ballplayers who want to win, but a legion of fans into the proverbial gutter just so you can leave town on your terms? But the question is, who replaces Dusty on an interim basis? During yesterday's pre-game, Santo was discussing the future with Chris Speier. Speier has managerial aspirations. Might not be the worst choice in the world. I think Speier would be a good choice as the interim manager.
  23. It amazes me how these players are rewarded for poor fundamentals with more playing time. That's where I blame Dusty. I will agree that he's done a much better job with the line up card, but to leave these guys in the game after a stupid mistake gives them no inspiration to NOT make that same mistake again.
