  1. Sutcliffe slurs his words on EVERY broadcast! I would have loved to have heard this... Almost as good as Joe Namath and Suzy Kolber...
  2. I can't agree with this. What Williams did was take a team that rode their way to a World Series via the starting pitching, and give the team another dynamic that doesn't force the starting pitching to carry the team again this year. In other words, he took a team that was heavily pitching oriented, and gave them balance without weakening the pitching staff. For that, Williams definitely deserves credit.
  3. Better than 2 out outs.
  4. I remember another famous quote by a former Cub manager. "Nice guys finish last."
  5. I don't want Dusty fired. I want MacPhail, Hendry, Dusty and all of his coaches (except maybe Speier) fired. It's not all Dusty's fault by a long shot. But, he's definitely part of the problem. A new manager probably won't do any better with this team. But, there have been managers who have. We need a manager who will not reward poor fundamentals. Firing people makes a statement to the players and the fans that losing is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
  6. Why not add both of them? Millar is a good bench guy anyway. When Lee comes back, you have really good bench depth. Send Bynum packing and send The Riot back down. You still have Neifi and Hairston to back up 2nd. Hairston can also play CF.
  7. I agree with Chocolate Milk. Pittsburgh had a good ball club many moons ago. Don't know whether it was the chicken or the egg, but the Pirates sell off all their good players and the fans don't come to games anymore. It seemed to me that if the fans got loud enough, management would do something. Baylor finally got fired in the middle of a season.
  8. Conine isn't enough to make a bad offense mediocre, but it is better than what they currently have. I do like the fact Conine can play OF, something other names cannot (Clark, Nevin, Sweeney, etc....)
  9. Concessions has to be a ridiculous profit. a $.20 hot dog sells for what? $3.50?
  10. While I'm not completely opposed to Nevin, I'm not a big fan of bringing in someone who can only play 1b. Nevin is horrible anywhere else defensively. What good is a guy who can only pinch hit once the regular is back to play everyday? I know you probably follow the Padres a lot closer than me. (I follow the Angels pretty close.) I saw on ESPN that Nevin's played some rf in the last few years. Has his defense just become horrible? I guess they could always put Murton in RF and hide Nevin in LF versue lefties. If you thought Jason Dubois was bad in LF, multiply how bad he was x 2 to get Phil Nevin's outfield defense. The Padres put Klesko back in the outfield so that they could put Nevin at 1st, and Klesko looks a lot like Adam Dunn defensively in the outfield. In Klesko's defense, he's not a bad 1b, but if Klesko is at 1st, where did they put Nevin?
  11. We actually have 2 capable backups this year: 1997 National Championship Brian Griese 10-5 as a starter Kyle Orton <--- never seen a 10-5 QB hated as much as Orton was most of last year. He wasn't hated, he just wasn't any good. But, he was just a rookie. Compare it to the current Cubs. If the pitching was throwing shut outs everyday and the offense was putting up 1 run a game, do you say the offense is doing great because they are winning every game? I'd say the pitching is doing great and they need to get better hitters to improve the offense so that they can keep winning games.
  12. A Todd Walker double mixed with some single's for an OBP of .350+ is far better in the lead off spot than Juan Pierre's rare single's and stolen bases to the tune of a sub .300 OBP. Granted, it would be nice if Walker had Cedeno type speed, but I'd sacrifice the speed for better OBP.
  13. Quite frankly, you could just ignore threads you have nothing of value to offer.
  14. Please stop with the gay references.
  15. While I'm not completely opposed to Nevin, I'm not a big fan of bringing in someone who can only play 1b. Nevin is horrible anywhere else defensively. What good is a guy who can only pinch hit once the regular is back to play everyday?
  16. I don't think anyone should get their half-shirt in a wad over tongue-in-cheek comments about Edmonds. But they should be uptight over something that Steinbrenner says about his employee? Please view your PM's.
  17. Personally, I could care less how well he bowls. :D
  18. Oh, he got more than plenty of credit in '03. Remember all the "In Dusty we Trusty" signs?
  19. Let's not be calling out other posters, please.
  20. Why should the Trib throw more money onto a sinking ship? Each time they bump the budget more, they suck more. The Yankees budget has ballooned ridiculously, and how many World Series victories has that brought them? Honestly, this is not the Tribune's fault. Unless you want to blame them for not cleaning house when they should have. Hendry's recent extension is an absolute joke.
  21. I agree. And I didn't mean to exclude Hendry and MacPhail. They need to go to. The Tribune opened the coffers more and more each year with this group, and what has it done? Some of the worst baseball in the history of the game. Fact: You can play this bad for a lot cheaper, which has to be running through the minds of Tribune execs. And I would also like to put this up for vote: Players receive their fat contracts after they earn it instead of before they earn it. This getting paid to not hustle, overthrow cutoff men, get picked off base, etc... is for the birds.
  22. I'd rather have the unknown. With Dusty, you know they won't win. With the unknown, there is a 50/50 chance. The whole coaching staff has to go in my opinion, except Speier. Speier goes too if he doesn't want the interim coaching job.
  23. I'd be fine with baby steps. Let's start with hiring someone who understands the value of a walk. How did the Cubs lose the first game against the Padres in this last series? They walked the lead off guy. Doh! The current regime doesn't stress the importance of plate patience and waiting on a hitter's pitch. They preach aggressiveness. They scold players who don't show enough aggressiveness. They sign players who are aggressive. Considering their philosophy, it really makes no sense that they got rid of Patterson. He's aggressive at the plate, he can catch the ball and he's fast. Sounds like a perfect match. Matt Murton is one of the few guys who had good plate patience. But, it sounds like Dusty is unhappy with his patience. All of a sudden, he's swinging at more pitches early in the count. The kid was hitting well over .300 at the time. Why would you mess with that?
