  1. Prior, Pie and Cedeno is too much. It sounds like Cedeno is in the Roberts package anyway, and that deal is probably all but done except for Angelos approving the deal.
  2. I got a feeling he and Edmonds will be liking Cesar Izareacharoundartist even more. :D
  3. More than anything, it was just a suggestion by Meph. I'd probably do it because I happen to agree that Greene could be a monster if you let him out of Petco. I agree Greene would be have the potential to be much better outside of Petco. I'm just wondering if you make this trade if for some reason we don't sign Fukudome. As of right now, Pie is our only legit CF (defensively). If we sign Fukudome, trade for Green and Roberts then put Derosa in RF that would be nice. A lot depends on signing someone to play CF capably though. I'm guessing it would likely cost the Cubs Pie and Cedeno, unless the Padres found Theriot more to their liking. They are really hurting for top of order type hitters (defined as what GM's view as top of the order type hitters, mind you). Probably have to give up a pitcher as well. The Padres have always been pretty high on Greene and they aren't just going to give him away. We know the Padres like Prior.

  6. Leave it to the guy with the caveman avatar to talk about speediness and lineup balance. Interesting first post. Yeah, it wasn't that great. Second post isn't much better. Well welcome anyways! I found "Tyrant's" response to caveman avatar's post rather ironic. :D
  7. Cool. Hendry just got himself a back up plan. Wooo woooo.
  8. Bitter, party of 1, your table is ready. :D Just kidding. Welcome to NSBB. You sound like me. But, I'm still better lookin'.
  9. LOL. No kidding. Great way to start the day, bowl of Cheerios and the sports section, where your own GM is making fun of your lack of talent.
  10. Not really. It's more like Cubs management ignoring the value of one of their own prospects simply because he doesn't fit the type of player they are looking for.
  11. More walruses please. post padder. :-k It was a joke made by O_O in this thread. You'd had to rifle through about 10 pages of crap to find it. Oh, I know. I was just padding my post count some more. :D Well you need to stop already because I'm trying to catch up to your post count. :P Whoa. You are closing in. Or did I pass you today? I think I might have set a record for posts in one day today sitting here waiting for nothing to happen. Anyway, post count padded again. Raisin better look out.
  12. I was kind of hoping Gallagher was going to be in the rotation next year, so I'm not all that thrilled to see him go. But, I do like Roberts. But would you do Murton and Gallagher straight up? Especially when we could get more for those two. We could get Teahen for Murton, and Gallagher could be used as an add-on to a major trade. Now if you have either Tejada or Bedard coming back over, then definately send them Gallagher, but not just for Roberts alone. The Cubs have done everything humanly possible to spoil any sort of trade value for Matt Murton. I doubt if we could get anything more than what we got for Craig Monroe. All any other team in the league sees of Matt Murton is part time player with little power and no real speed, oh and he's right handed just like a million other outfielders currently looking for work. I love Murt. But, he has no trade value. Gallagher on the other hand, is someone I wouldn't trade unless it was for a good player. Brian Roberts is a good player. Only Goony (JerseyCubFan) screams louder than I do that this club needs more players that can get on base. Roberts does that. For Roberts, I would deal Gallagher and Murton, but I would hope Hendry tried to sell him on Marshall and Murton first. So no, I don't think the Cubs could get a better package dealing Murton and Gallagher separately.

  15. I would definitely dispute this. Good hitting isn't just good OBP. SLG factors in there as well. Based on what you just said, Soriano would be the #8 hitter in the line up if each other player in the line up had a better OBP.
  16. 14% isn't a pretty good rate. It might be an acceptable rate, but not a pretty good rate. Anytime you are making outs on the basepaths, you are taking a potential run off the board. Now, take that 14% stolen base percentage and remove it from Roberts OBP, because that's a better measure of his OBP. A speedy .350 lead off guy who gets caught stealing a lot is not as valuable as a slow .350 lead off guy who never gets caught stealing.
  17. But apply it to the Cubs, they had Soriano at the top, in front of Theriot for much of the season. If they don't get someone like Roberts, it'll be costing them runs as Soriano isn't their best overall hitter so it doesn't utilize the lineup theory of giving your best hitter the most PAs and it puts a lower OBP guy in front of your best hitters. The Cubs need hitter(s) to get on base and another middle of the order hitter, hopefully Roberts and Fukudome answer the need of OBP and shifting Soriano down to the 5th spot (hopefully) solves the bat in the middle. If all these rumors pan out and the Cubs end up with Roberts, Fukudome and Figgins and if DeRosa can field SS adequately enough to make Theriot the super sub, this Cub team will be scary good. The OBP of the entire line up will be  excellent. I'd like to replace Figgins with Bradley or Hamilton please. I'd like that too, but it's not likely with this administration. I'm okay with Figgins. I'd imagine by adding Figgins, they could slide Fukudome down towards the middle of the order. And if they had all these guys, Fukudome's OBP hitting down in the order wouldn't actually be a bad thing for once.

  19. You'll get that from most of us here. There aren't many NSBBers that believe in the "prototypical lead off hitter" theory. I just had this discussion in another thread earlier today. The best lead off hitter the Cubs have had in the last few generations is Mark Bellhorn. He isn't speedy and he didn't make good contact on every swing, but he scored runs like they were going out of style. How? He got on base. It's nice if you can get a speedy guy who makes good contact on every pitch and gets on base 40% of the time, but they have yet to clone Rickey Henderson. The Red Sox did just fine with fatty Kevin Youkilis leading off for them for a short spell that first time they won the World Series in the 2000's. Theriot should be batting 8th on the Cubs team. He doesn't provide a good enough OBP to bat at the top of the order. His speed is worthless when he's walking back to the bench after making an out. If Soriano and Theriot are the options to lead off, I'll take Soriano everytime. Why? Because Soriano should come to the plate more often than Theriot. They have approximately the same OBP, but Soriano brings a nifty SLG along with it. Brian Roberts? Yeah, I'd bat him lead off. But only because his OBP meets my approval to bat lead off, not how many bases he stole last year. One of the worst lead off hitters the Cubs have had (excluding Corey Patterson) in the 2000's is Juan Pierre. He's the very definition of the "prototypical lead off guy". And he sucks. That's why USSoccer gave you a hard time. There really isn't such a thing as a "lead off hitter". There is such a thing as putting a good player in the lead off spot, however. Murton would have been a more capable lead off guy than Theriot or Pierre. He would have scored more runs than either of them, also.
  20. Mike Cameron isn't getting any younger, but that boy can go get the ball still.
  21. Poor EPatt. If he's involved in this deal, he's following his brother all over MLB, but just can't seem to catch up with him.
  22. Those guys aren't getting paid 8 figures to take a day off once a week. The baseball schedule allows for days off all season long. This is just Hendry being stupid some more. Lou: "Hey Alf, you're sitting today for no good reason other than we need to get DeRosa some at bats." Alf: "Screw you, Lou. I'm playing." Lou: "Hey Fuke, you're sitting today for no good reason other than we need to get DeRosa some at bats." Fuke: (in Japanese) "Screw you, Lou, I'm playing." Lou: "Hey BRob, you're sitting today for no good reason other than we need to get DeRosa some at bats." BRob: "Screw you, Lou. I'm playing." Lou: "Sorry DeRo, we got nowhere else to play you." DeRo: "What about SS? I'm better than that guy you're sending out there." Lou: "Sorry, Mark. Jim says it's too bad you don't hit left handed, otherwise we'd think about it."
