  1. A lot of times, people reference WARP or EQA or one of the other less than popular stats in one of their posts. Many new members may not even know what site to click on to search for a glossary to find out what it means, how it works and how it pertains to the discussion. When that happens, those posts quite often then ask for an explanation for how that particular stat works. I suppose people could explain it again each time it's brought up. Or, you could harmlessly sticky a glossary in the FAQ thread where people can easily access that info. People could also tell them where they can easily find that info rather than explain it over and over. Or maybe when I get bored, I might want to actually learn EQA, and I know right where I can go to do exactly that. He's not asking everyone to give a pint of blood. I guess the reason I see this as having value is that there are many posters not as knowledgeable as yourself to all the stats that are out there, and may not even begin to know where to go to find this info. For the same reasoning, Raisin posts all the box scores of all the minor league and offseason games in the minor league forum. Sure, we can all go out there and search and find them ourselves. Finding them here is a whole lot easier.
  2. I can't imagine we would lose that many players in this deal. Peavy's good, but he's not 8 players good. Assuming that the rumors we have heard are true. The Cubs would be getting Olson from the Orioles and 2 pitchers from the Phillies for DeRosa. That would then mean that the Cubs would be trading: Olson, Kendrick, Phillies second pitcher, Marquis, Cedeno, Hart, plus losing DeRosa and Pie just to get Peavy. How many 8 for 1's realistically happen? My guess would be that the Padres would be happy to get the 3 pitchers from Baltimore and Philadelphia, Marquis (and cash) and Vitters. Breaking it down to what the Cubs would actually be trading then would be: Marquis, DeRosa, Pie, Vitters. The Padres get Marquis and Vitters along with the 3 pitchers from the other two teams. If Hendry makes this deal work by taking Vitters and Marshall out of the package, I'll be shocked. The deals from Baltimore and Philly should lessen the amount the Cubs pay for Peavy, not keep it the same.
  3. Is Baltimore still out of the picture at this point?
  4. This is all so surreal right now. The possibility of resigning Dempster, trading for Peavy, signing Milton Bradley, all while there is basically a lame duck team owner is just mind boggling. "Hey, let's all spend the NEXT owner's money, and spend it GOOD!"
  5. Which part of the day are you referring to? Hendry's cards are being played close to the vest, and Towers has all of his laid out on the table. Predictable that there are tons of varying reports.
  6. I hate doing MLPeel's job. He was much better at it than I. If we could get CubColtPacer to post here more often, I would bequeth that responsibility onto him.
  7. I could see towers and hendry tripping on shrooms while going to see cirque du soleil to discuss this deal. "The tall chair is gawking at me and the short one is behaving very droll!" Maybe the holdup is the Cubs getting another player back in the deal. Remember when Minnesota expected to get Murton in the Nomar deal? Maybe Towers sees someone he likes in the Rule V draft and wants to make sure that he has roster space. That's unlikely. He's looking to receive a large number of players that almost all would need placed on the 40 man immediately. If he wants somebody in the rule 5, he's already got a roster crunch... waiting wont help. But on the other side of the page, youd think that Hendry would want it done before the draft, as Im assuming that theyre will be at least 3 spaces opened up on our 40 man, and he could chose to pretect a few more guys. I might be wrong, but I don't think it works that way. You have to submit your 40 man roster by a particular date, thereby exposing those players that are not on the 40 man and not protected by other means to Rule 5. If you allowed teams to pull players back in, the Rule 5 draft would be a crazy mess.
  8. http://hotstove.mlblogs.com/archives/2008/12/getting_closer_to_a_deal_for_p.html Not much that we didn't already know(move Marquis/Derosa/find 3rd team), but at least they are still talking and Towers seems to think they are closer to a deal, interesting that they would wait until thursday to announce a trade. This is just nerve racking :banghead: How about before the Bears game rather than during?
  9. Thanks for this post. Wow. That really sucks. I'm guessing these guys were being too critical of San Diego sports and someone pressured them into being let go. I'm not familiar with Tutino, but I really like Werndl. Never would have guessed that spelling.
  10. Him and Joe Tutino were let go by 1090. That sucks. I liked Philly Billy.
  11. I'm pretty sure the other guy who broadcasts on this station at this time is Philly Billy Werndell. I didn't hear his voice. Is he the one they are talking about being fired?
  12. Yeah, the announcer said the station was going to make a statement or something, and that it was the second toughest day, next to being on the air when his mother/grandmother died. Any clue as to what happened? His radio partner got the ax without it being publicly known why? BBB? What station is it? I was listening to 1090 a moment ago, and all they were talking about was a phone call they were expecting from Greg Maddux any minute.
  13. http://www.xxsportsradio.com/pages/main Click the Listen Live icon Cool. An excuse to go out to the car and have a cigarette. 1090 is already dialed up on my car stereo.
  14. I could see this having value as a sticky on a FAQ page.
  15. Love DeRo. But, he ain't Geovany Soto. If someone needs DeRosa to bring Peavy to Chicago, someone hold the door for DeRosa so it doesn't hit him in the butt on his way out.
  16. The idea is to not get swept in the postseason. The more good talent you add, the more likely it is to win - though that's certainly not the only factor. I'm mostly tongue-in-cheek on the "too much" thing, but the odds of any individual player being the difference in a five-game playoff series is almost nil. Manny Ramirez says hi.
  17. http://hotstove.mlblogs.com/archives/2008/12/peavy_talks_slowing.html Basically same report we been hearing all day from the Cubs sources. But Towers comments kinda said otherwise. If you thumb back a page or two, Bruce Miles pretty much said that Hendry and Towers had not met at all today, as they were in organized meetings. What I gather from that is that nothing is different since they met last night and they are likely to meet up sometime this afternoon.
  18. He hasn't been told he has to move Peavy. He's been told that payroll must be 40m for the '09 season. However that happens, ownership probably doesn't care, just as long as the budget is met. No one is taking Giles' contract. And Giles has basically said he will veto any trade. Giles and Peavy make up 20m of the 40m budget by themselves, leaving 20m left to split among 23 players. That's less than 1m per player. In order for Towers to save his job, Peavy has to go. Unless he somehow magically trades Giles.
  19. Hendry and Towers are playing "War". Hendry has all the aces and kings. The Cubs biggest need is RF. Peavy is not a RF. If the Cubs can't get Peavy, they appear to be frontrunners for RJ. Peavy is not a necessity, therefore, Hendry doesn't need to trade the farm for Peavy. Towers is on the outside looking in. Hendry knows it. Hendry will offer a fair price, but he will not be taken to the cleaners.
  20. http://elismlbrumors.com/ This site has been iffy in the past, but the dude claims he's at the hotel. He also says that they've been informed a press conference is scheduled at 12 (their time), but that eh doesn't think it's going to be anything significant. Oh really. I've got 12:23 on my clock.
  21. I don't know about anyone else, but I really need this Peavy trade to be completed so that my plate will be clear to work on other things.
  22. I wonder if Olson and Happ remove Marshall from the discussion entirely. Hendry has said he didn't want to trade Fontenot or Marshall. Olson, Happ and Marshall are all lefties. Add in Wade LeBlanc, and that's a lot of lefties potentially in the Padres rotation. Maybe Hart replaces Marshall. Of course, Wuertz and Guzman have been mentioned as well. Maybe Marquis replaces Marshall, which might be where the "Cubs might have to eat 5 or 6m" rumor comes from. By moving DeRosa and picking up that much of Marquis' contract, it would put them in about the same spot financially.
  23. Where do I sign? Seems like an awful lot to give up from our major league team. This team is built to win now, and losing DeRosa and Marshall really hurts our flexibility when Soriano, Harden, Zambrano and Peavy go down at some point. We still have Samardzija and Gaudin (hopefully). Marshall isn't that huge of a loss, though I'd love to keep him. And then who replaces one of them in the bullpen? And do you really see Samardzija as being Marshall's equal? Furthermore, what happens if we sign Bradley, and can't play DeRosa in right for the 60-70 games Bradley will miss? This trade looks good on paper, but we're really losing a lot of flexibility I'll admit that it will sting a bit to lose DeRosa. But, if Bradley is missing time, you put Fukudome or Hoffpauir out there and play Johnson in center. I would imagine the Cubs could find someone else on the cheap to fill in when necessary. As temporary call ups, the Cubs could bring up Jake Fox, Sam Fuld or maybe Josh Kroeger will still be around. Hopefully, Colvin can become an option sooner rather than later.
  24. Grudz would be a cheap platoon option that kills lefties. All this talk of the Cubs trading Derosa makes me wonder if in one of these four team deals BRoberts also becomes a Cub. Who exactly are you trading to Baltimore to get Roberts? After the Peavy deal, there will be little left to trade. After last year's debacle, I don't see Hendry wasting any time talking to MacPhail about Roberts. If the Cubs still have money left over after trading for Peavy and signing Bradley, Furcal would make more sense than Roberts since he can be signed as a free agent. I doubt they have the money to do all 3, however.
